System Shock & Deus Ex
« on: February 23, 2007, 09:53:33 AM »
I saw a minor off-subject discussion about 'Deus Ex' in the "New Sadness info" thread, and thought I would continue it here. Haven't really thought about the games lately, but I think both series were amazing and added a lot of new ideas to gaming. I really prefer System Shock 2 over any Deus Ex game, but since the company stopped making the series, I had to convert over to Deus Ex.

I really don't remember and too lazy to double check, but I remember someone saying that Deus Ex doesn't really have a RPG type of style to it, and is mainly a FPS. I was really disappointed with Invisible War compared to the other title, and was wondering too if that's the one you played. I really think the original Deus Ex and System Shock 2 showed of the FPS-RPG mix really well. These games are realy amazing and in depth, and as much as Half-Life is an amazing game, the innovation that is put into the Deus Ex series is really ridiculously great. The worlds were always mostly open to you to explore, and yet the game had this edge that had you running away saving the little ammo you picked up along the way, than running in blazing up your gun - spraying and praying. As the game continued on, You really do feel like you guys has grown along the way and has really leveled up like an RPG. Many different options to go into to always make your strategies different and changing. Someone on here also mentioned how they played the game numerous time, and not one time was it really the 'same'. I have to admit, the company really did a better job on the storyline with the System Shock series, but I still think Deus Ex had a pretty good storyline. Although I was disappointed more or less with Invisible War than the other titles.

I haven't really followed up on the two games recently. I know System Shock 2 had some homebrew mod being created to up the graphics and multiplayer, but I haven't heard much recently in the past couple years. I'm not even to sure if they plan on making a new Deus Ex, or if the company who originally made the titles is still around. I guess I could always Wiki it, but my Friday's Unmotivational Mood has already kicked in. Anyone know if anything new about one of these tiles has came out in the past year, or if the company is still around and planning to create a new game? They really did the FPS-RPG element well, and dearly miss that type of gameplay.

I remember Deus Ex and it was a truly unique game, never played any of the followups. In regards to System Shock, I haven't played either of them but I hear that the upcoming Bioshock is almost like a sequel in the way it plays.

Both of the companies responsible for these games are gone now.  The people behind System Shock are currently working on BioShock, though.

Surpised I haven't heard anything about BioShock. Just went to goto the website and asked me for my age, and then got an error for a privacy policy. Don't know if I accidently put in the wrong year, but I'm 22 and think I'm old enough to enter, hah. So, for some reason, Now I can't get into the website.

I really hope this BioShock is as creepy as System Shock. The reason I loved System Shock over Deus Ex, was due to the fact that the game was one of the scariest games I've ever played. The sounds in the game were one of the best in it's time, and had a lot of creepy SFX. You were stranded on this ship in space, and had it's real dark moments. Not to mention, the antagonist/enemy of the game, SHODAN, has been awarded with best villian of all time on numerous occasions. The storyline and twists in the game are remarkable, and how the story builds was so in depth for it's time. Long story short, I really hope they put as much effort and innovation in BioShock as they did in System Shock, and continue to make it a creepy game. I really love the "Run away becuase you barely have ammo" feeling than the run in there blazing feeling. Hope they keep to that kind of gameplay too.

You should also check out Project: Snowblind.  It was supposed to be a spin-off from Deus Ex 2 (it was going to be called Deus Ex: Clan Wars) but when Deus Ex 2 bombed they changed the name to distance it from the franchise.

It's a simplified version of Deus Ex 2; the rpg elements are stripped out but the core gameplay remains.  It's good stuff.

I was such a fan of System Shock 2. It was one of the creepiest games I ever played. Used to play with headphones on and it would scare the crap out of me. The sounds would get me everytime.

You hear the ship creeking and sparks flying out...next thing you know a human with crap sticking out of head is walking towards you and swings at you with a wrench while wispering "Kill me, please" You kill him and move on, then you hear a creepy sound of a monkey somewhere.

The game was awesome. I ended up losing my copy before I could get too far into it, so I have no clue what I missed.

On a side note, I checked out Bioshock's website and was able to go check it out just fine. Although the flash site won't let me click on anything except screenshots, so I went to the HTML site and got more info, try going to check that one out.

Bleh, as if Invisible Ware weren't oversimplified enough.  It looked like it might be an entertaining throwaway FPS romp, though.  I might check it out sometime; it's <$10 at Amazon.  edit: Actually it's <$5 new from a few of Amazon's third party sellers.

Well, caveat being I really liked Invisible War, but that's exactly what it is - a throwaway FPS romp, that incorporates some of the gameplay aspects (namely the multi-path level design and tech skills) of the Deus Ex series.

It's worth it to be able to hack mechs and blow up a group of guards.

I don't know if I would call Deus Ex a RPG. I would put it closer to a action-adventure game with RPG aspects. The great thing about Deus Ex was that it was meaty; really a ton of content. It was like a Zelda game in that respect.

Some reason I can't get onto the main BioShock website still, probably some cookie or something lame like that. I did however find a fan site that had information and screenshots, no video yet from what I can tell. Seems pretty interesting, but I think I will stay away from keeping up with this title. I really hope it is a really great game like the previous games they have touched base on and created, but it seems whenever I get over-excited for a game, I tend to get my expectations way up becuase of that. Can't wait to see how things play out though.

Just downloaded System Shock 2 again and the Rebirth mod, Game kind of has a dull beginning, but always fun to replay the game. I've bought the game about 3 times now and lost the CDs over and over too. Try to get my computer gaming in when Im not playing on my Wii/DS, but no new games besides Company of Heroes has really caught my attention.

I downloaded System Shock 2 from Home of the Underdogs once, but it crashed so frequently that I gave up after completing the training. ):

Yeah, I used to have that problem too. Some reason this version I downloaded that has a few mods with it for better graphics and fixes a few bugs, and works fine for me now. I think it's becuase it wasn't meant for Windows XP and has some compatibility issues with it.

On another note, Found out BioShock comes out in August. Another interesting thing is that the company that is doing the game, is also in the making of another X-Com game. Another series that I found to be a great from back in the day. Can't beleive I haven't heard of this company doing these games until now, Used to be great games and now some of my fav classics from the PC Gaming area. Very excited and interested to see how they handle these titles.

Bull.  I refuse to play Oblivion without a distant land texture replacer and Natural Environments. It really depends on personal tastes.

Great video, wandering.  Looks like BioShock definitely has similar open-ended problem solving to Deus Ex. I liked the part where she set a teddy bear on fire then threw it at the big daddy to ignite him. :D
