Was NeoGAF always like this?
« on: January 31, 2007, 02:19:29 PM »
I've heard a lot of people talk about the GAF boards but I've never really sat down and looked at the forums.
So tonight I went over there and looked at it so see if it's worth joining.
The only word I could be used to describe it was "wasteland".

I'm not trying to insult any NWR posters who post there, but has that site always been so screwed up?
Could anyone fill me with a little history of that place.

Well, let's just say that some of the mods there are quite possibly the most annoying and arrogant asses on the internet, and that should be enough... =)

Only thing worth going there for is MediaCrate sales numbers and Famitsu/Dream scans...

Yes. I rarely visit, but it's always the same story whenever I do. Although you can find a few gems hidden in the gigantic pile of feces if you look hard enough..

Doesn't help that all the feces get piled into one forum instead of separate ones for systems, genres or other kinds of divisions.

I will stay on lurker status for the time being, thanks.

My friend Miyuru continually insists that I go there.

Because Miyuru uses a photo of himself as his avatar, while we were at E3, there were many people who recognized him.  o_0  "It's Internet Legend Miyuru!"

I suppose I could become an "Internet Legend" if I used my own photo as an avatar, and posted lots of intelligent posts.

When I first started posting here a couple years back, I always felt really dumb.  Like everyone here was smarter than me.  When I did post on GameFAQs, it was the opposite, and I wonder if it'd be the same as at NeoGAF.

I think it stands for Gaming-Age Forums.

My friend insists that it's awesome because they don't have separate boards or categories.  Every topic thread is in the same singular mess.  Somehow that's "better", he says.  I don't get it...I imagine the topics must cycle pretty quickly that if you miss a thread, it'll be three pages back the next time you look.

I agree with everyone here, the forum is laughable. Mainly because of the mods agendas running the board, and the crap posters who suck up to them and high five each other every post. It's a very censored, tense community and they all refuse to acknowledge their gaming tastes as niche. They also don't actually play games and can't think for themselves.

I just recently discovered that place, but there's no way in hell I'm going to post there. I've never found a greater community than you guys here on PG...arrrr....

But GAF is useful to observe because they can be quicklike on news, they often have the latest sales numbers there, and when they start photoshopping...whoo-boy!

But seriously, GAF is a great place for information, cause like Mario said, they don't actually play games. They have drones all over the internet that collectively gather and post info, gaming and otherwise(Off-Topic Thread). They also have people that have a hobby of keeping the most accurate sales data on the net for no other purpose than to be useful to the Media-Create and NPD threads.

There is alot of good on GAF but it really is muffled by all the fanbois posting just to see their screenames added to the thread, just so they could say they were there, like its some sort of event that is gonna be remember throughout the ages.

I think the question is not if the forums are crap but why are they so popular? are they really old? do they have this long history?

and to add to that, lots of industry insiders post on GAF. I just posted some quotes from a Hudson Employee in the $40 game thread in the Wii section for example, and I've seen CliffyB on there plus lots of other developers such as Dennis Dyack(who also posted here at some point a long long time ago) and many others.

And since they have so many users, from all over the world, not only are they a good place to find news first, but lots of other sites actually get some of their content from there. Announcements, Screen Shots, Mag Scans, Rumors, Sales Data, and the best of all are the Photoshops. You have to check out the photoshop threads.

Oh yes, I knew about the many insiders on the forum, but it left me wondering why theres such a concentration of them in such a lame site to begin with, I shoudl've asked: why they are so popular among "industry insiders". Thats why I was wondering if they had this long history of being reporting games for a long time before ign got bigger or something, or if it just happens that industry insiders are just lame themselves.

Ah, NeoGAF. Never will you find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.

Seriously, it's a popular place for people to post anonymously about videogames on the internet. What were you expecting?

Quote

why are they so popular?

I dunno. I expect many migrated there after the great ign exodus.

I think GAF has been kinda cool as a news aggregator. Pretty much 15 seconds after something happens, it's there. And they've also had many CLASSIC photoshop threads, like the Reggie Though History thing.  But I agree that there is an insane amount of noise to sift through.  And the inside jokes get a bit old... "Sony am cry total!"
"wow."

If I want to see examples of human stupidity I'll just go to the Next Gen Gaming board at Gamefaqs because it's pretty much the same thing as GAF, except easier to read since it's not cluttered with all those pictures and crap.  It even contains the same threads and many of the same people from GAF as well.

I will pop in the neoGAF forums every once in a while for info but I never post. Like you guys have said it is a wonderful place to get the latest news and sales but as far as discussions go it's not so hot.
