I just love this game.  I just wish I had a bigger screen to play it on.  The graphics are great, tons of neat new animations on the fireball, the swimming fishies, etc....

So, where's the sequal?

Considering that New Super Mario Bros was a lot like a souped up version of Super Mario Bros I wonder if NSMB2 would be a souped up version of Super Mario Bros 2 with Shyguys and throwing vegatables and such.

NSMB was a combination of Mario brothers 1 and 3. That means NSMB 2 has to be a combination of Mario Brothers 2 and Super Mario World.

Soooooooo, we're going to be throwing vegatables at Koopalings on Dinosaur Island during a dream. Can't wait for the epic clash between Wart and Bowser.

Still makes me wonder about NSMB 3 which will combine Super Mario Brothers 3 and Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. It boggles the mind.

Khush not quite.  New Super Mario Brothers was more likely the original Super Mario Brothers, with additional moves that weren't included until the later Mario games.  However, the feel is quite different than Mario 3 or World...so I would not say it is a fair blend of the two original series.

If another New Super Mario Brothers game was created.  I think it would be best to start with a souped up version of Mario 2.  That game is one of the more unique Mario experiences, and I believe that the game play mechanics within that game never met their full potential.  Which means the experience would be awesome.

Though I would suggest since Mario 2 would be full of Birdos and other less typical Mario villians, that Yoshi might be able to find a place in this game.  But, I wouldn't want egg tossing Yoshi, but the more traditional Yoshi from Mario World.

Finally, New Super Mario 3 should be saved either for the Nintendo Portable system...or created specifically for the Wii.  As that game needs to be amazing...and I would suggest sprites for that game instead of 3D models.

I'd kill for that, really. I loved #2 as a kid, and would love to see a new game in that vein... of course, it still must include the ability to play as four different characters.

More like New Doki Doki Panic, amirite?

And yeah, I'd love for this game to come out. I don't quite understand how NSMB is a "souped up" version of the original - it added a lot, and was distinct to me. I actually liked that it focused more on platforming than on the powerups, but NSMB2 could be the opposite.

I liked the 3D models, but I wouldn't mind if they went back to sprites..

They should just create a spin-off title like they did with the MarioLand games. Create New Super Luigi Bros for DS!!!

Well Super Mario Brothers 2 isn't even a real Mario game in Japan, so hopefully they just skip it and move onto Super Mario 3...  (Super Mario World would be fine too!)

"Well Super Mario Brothers 2 isn't even a real Mario game in Japan, so hopefully they just skip it and move onto Super Mario 3..."

I actually would find that rather uninteresting.  NSMB has a lot of the gameplay tweaks added in SMB3 in it anyway so using that as a basis for a sequel wouldn't be very similar.  A return to the SMB2 style at least would be more unique and different.

Personally I would rather they just make a new Mario game for the DS that doesn't specifically reference an earlier Mario title and doesn't play things as safe as NSMB did.  But if they do continue in the direction they're going in a NSMB2 would be what I would want the most.

Plus if you go by "in Japan it's like this" then the next game would be based on Lost Levels, and thus would be a boring rehash.  Besides isn't Mario 2 called Super Mario USA in Japan and is pretty much now an "official" Mario game?

Considering Shyguys and Birdo are in everything from Super Mario RPG to the Mario Sports titles... I would say that's a safe assumption. Its contributions are many to the Mario universe, but besides characters there are also dynamics like Peach's "floating jump" and the turnips which made it into Smash Bros Melee.

Besides, official or not, it was re-released on the GBA anyway in Japan as the first Mario Advance. So it's clearly loved enough by the masses, even if not to the same degree as 3 or World was.

I wish they'd just drop the new crap and make Super Mario Planet or Super Mario Bros. 4. Make something totally fresh and new for 2D Mario.

New Super Mario Brothers 2

Playable Characters:

Mario, Luigi, Princess, Wario, and Yoshi

Mario Average character
Luigi High Jumper
Princess Floater
Wario Can take more hits and is stronger
Yoshi Odd ball character...plays like Yoshi, but with more restricted controls for the SMB2 format.

The game has 3 ACTS.  One with levels leading up to fighting Wart, then a set of traditional Mario levels with Bowser, and ACT 3 would be a surreal combination of Traditional Mario and SMB2 blended games with the final Boss being Wart and Bowser at the same time.

Additional powers could be:  Aiming and throwing items in at least 4 directions possible 8.

Double and Triple Jumps

And I sure there could be much, much more.

It was called Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.  But I agree, I'd like to see another different Mario game. I'd also like to see the super-duper ultimate Super Mario Bros/World sequel that everyone's always asking for (the one with 20 animal costumes and 500 levels and all the monsters from all the games, EVER) but I don't think we're going to get it.

I think a New SMB sequel would actually be a very safe, straightforward update of the first one.  Maybe we'd see flying or Yoshis or flying Yoshis added, but I think the point of the original game was to go back to the basics so that anyone could pick it up easily, not just Mario fans.
That's my opinion, not yours.

I would really like an all-new Mario sidescroller (preferably sprite-based). I know that Miyamoto and others at Nintendo could make a totally awesome and fresh game. I think the reason they don't do it is because 3D is the standard now and they fear putting that much money/work into a game that might not be successful. This probably also  influenced their decision put LoZ: Phantom Hourglass and NSMB in 3D. Hopefully the success of New Super Mario Bros. did a little bit to ease their concerns, because there is definitely a market for traditional-style Mario games.
Thanks for listening.

YES!  Everyone wants this, even if they don't think they do.

One thing I always thought would be cool would be to combine the gameplay of both Mario 2 and the other Mario games in that some enemies are killed by jumping on and some enemies are like in Mario 2 where you stand on them and can throw them.  I think that would really shake things up.

Looking at the recently completed maps of all of the Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3
e-Reader stages (World e+) (contributed to my site by Peardian), it looks like that was already attempted.  Some stages (such as World e+ - Area 3 - Vegetable Volley) have turnips, and some have SMB2-style keys.  Some stages also have enemies (like Charging Chucks, Wigglers, Dry Beetles, Big Boo, etc.) and items (item bubbles, item roulette blocks, extending blocks, triangular wall dash blocks) that originally came from Super Mario World.  Poison Mushrooms from The Lost Levels, and pinball flipper doors from Yoshi's Island, as well.  And other things I neglected to mention from these other Mario games.

Too bad the e-Reader wasn't so hot.  Those semi-original (and challenging, from the looks of some of them) stages could almost be a sizeable fraction of a new 2D Mario game.
