Eye of Sauron Turns Towards Nintendo
« on: January 10, 2007, 07:09:41 AM »
Ha ha ha, excuse the dramatic title.  Thing is, Bill Gates has recently stated that Nintendo will be Microsoft's toughest competition.  This is a complete about-face from the early 360 days where Nintendo was a "niche" company that had it's little cult following, and nothing more.  I think this also marks the first time any of the competing execs have openly acknowledged that Nintendo is a major threat.

Nintendo got all the way through the front door before anyone said anything.

The worse thing that one can do is completely write off someone else because they assume that they have become irrelevant.  Nintendo has proven to them that they are not to be trifled with.

This could be MS recognizing Nintendo as a legit competitor in this round, or it could simply be yet someone else kicking Sony while they're down.

The title of this thread is 100% accurate. My hat is off.

My mental image is MS and Nintendo both standing with their weapons drawn, waiting for the big dragon Sony to emerge. Sony appears but turns out to be half a metre high and uses crutches to walk. MS and Nintendo burst into laughter, when they're done they start fighting each other.

This is quite true, I think it's a bit of both.  I think MS loves any chance to kick Sony while it's down, because PS3 matches 360's functionality much more closely than Wii.

Still, we've seen it at E3, we've seen it at launch, and we're seeing it right now with Wii continuing to outsell PS3 even after PS3 supply has caught up with demand: Wii is a hot item, it's running on the same strategy as DS, and I think Gates is starting to take notice.

While it is good that Nintendo can be acknowledged in this way I was kind of hoping that MS wouldn't notice so soon so that Nintendo could sneak up on them and gain some ground while they're unprepared.  If MS considers Nintendo a threat then it's going to be a harder battle for Nintendo.

I don't get it.  Are you calling Iwata a hobbit?  Is the Wii a ring?  Who's Sony?  I'm so confused.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

No it's not.  MS can't emulate what Nintendo has done because they have tried so hard to distance themselves from what Nintendo has done that all they will do is alienate their already established consumer base.  Xbox and Xbox 360 owners have already made clear what kind of games they want, and outside of that they don't, pretty much, give a damn.  Nintendo can offer those kind of games, plus more, and they will sell.

I'm kinda worried that MS, after seeing one of the Japanese giants go down, will start throwing out even bigger moneyhats in an attempt to buy up developers who can no longer turn to Sony for sales but might still be leery of Nintendo.

One of the reasons I refuse to support MS is because of the sh*thole the gaming industry would be with them in first place. Imagine if EA made and set the standards for all games and that's what MS would be doing.

Iwata is actually rather tall for a Japanese man.

As for the rest of the references, the hobbits would be the justice department and the ring would be the anti-monopoly suit which, of course, means the ring never made it into Mt. Doom.

MS's mantra is "rip off early, rip off often". If the Wii starts stomping them in the market, they're going to release their own version of the Wiimote and start trying to push developers to make games for it.

They've been playing that game with Apple for around 20 years now.

I agree with Ian, but I think this comment is mainly aimed at Sony.

MS still has one thing going for it Wii hasnt quit cought upwith and thast the online gaming. Once Wii gets online gaming and if it works out like people are hoping 360 is going to start to lose a lot of its appeal.

I think it's going to be really interesting to see how Microsoft reacts.  If Gates is sincere, then we may see something like the Wiimote come to 360 as an "extra" peripheral later this year.  I don't think that'll be enough.  But I do think MS still sees Sony as the main threat to Xbox 360 and the home PC market, so I imagine MS will keep going down the same road with 360, fighting Sony, while throwing in some half-measures to try to slow down Nintendo.

Here we go for an analogy. (This is from the evolution of the text)

Sony:  Mordor
MS: The Realm of Man
Nintendo:  The Shire and other lands of Hobbits.

It's a pretty close fit.  The Hobbits didn't originally have a Ring of Power.  In Fact Sega could be the Elves for that matter...  Actually I need to go back and read the rhyme to get this totally correct.

Actually I need to go back and read the rhyme to get this totally correct.

That's okay, I have it memorized.

Three rings for the elven kings under the sky
Seven for the dwarf lords in their halls of stone
Nine for mortal men doomed to die
One ring for the dark lord on his dark throne
In the land of Mordor where the shadows lie
One ring to rule them all
One ring to find them
One ring to bring them all
And in the darkness bind them
In the land of Mordor where the shadows lie

(If the Wii is Aragorn, I think Frodo and Sam would have to be the PSP and PS3. The ring represents games - which Sony is trying to destroy with Blu ray movies and other such things (ie, the fires of doom), and Nintendo is trying to destroy with non-games (also the fires of doom). Microsoft is trying to use the power of games to take over all the land, but when games are destroyed, Microsoft will crumble, and  Apple, Inc. (men), Nintendo (Elves), and Linux (Dwarves) will reign.)
