Author Topic: Speckles on-screen! Am I going to need to get my Wii replaced? (Read 6141 times)

I first noticed this on Twilight Princess recently...speckles that appear on the screen. I thought they were random but soon I noticed they were in the same spots when playing Twilight Princess. If I returned to the Wii menu after Zelda, they would be there too, most noticeably to the left of the Disc Channel.

I wasn't sure at first if it was the TV or the component cable or the game or the Wii itself, but it may be a Wii problem, as the specks it creates seem specific per game and yet I didn't have these speckles until a few days ago. There are some in Wii Sports now too and I rented Rayman: Raving Rabbids, where there are many noticeable speckles that fall within a series of vertical bands across the center of the screen. The game is still playable, things are still visibile, but if this is a problem that will worsen then I want to do something about it. I don't want to send it in for repairs but maybe have to (and I don't want to lose my saves or Miis or VC games, etc.).

My brother says people on GameFAQs think it's an overheating problem. I have it vertical, as I always have, but recently I moved the Wii lower down the shelf so that my brother could play DDR: Mario Mix without the dance pad's cable being a problem. Lower down here, there's less ventilation and it's surrounded by the satellite receiver, DVD player, and amplifier. Could that be why, if the Wii is actually prone to overheating? The other guess is that the video card is screwy, which will definitely need repairs.

I never had a problem with Nintendo hardware until I got a DS Lite earlier this year with a dead pixel in the middle of it (thankfully the store took it back without a fuss). I hope Nintendo 's hardware track record isn't slipping; my NES still works. >_<

I don’t have this problem with my Wii, but it sounds a lot like a problem I have with my DVD player. After it has been on for awhile it starts to get white specks down the center of the screen and more and more appear as time goes on. It is definitely an overheating issue in my case. I sometimes put a bowl of ice on top my DVD player and the specks go away. You should try unplugging your Wii for awhile and let it cool down to see if it is really an overheating problem.

maybe try buying a little fan and aiming it at the wii. I do that with my LCD TV because when it over heats the menus all flip upside down.

Sounds like overheating to me. Some electronics display less when they overheat unlike computers, which just slow down. Definitely find a way to give it more ventilation.

My guess is overheating broke your graphics card in your Wii. That really sucks.

Get everything moved to your SD card and run it from there, including any VC saves. Delete all the VC games and then just wait.

dude my Wii gets really hot too, but I havent had any problems yet. Now I need to find a way to keep it form gettng hot. I htought they said itw asnt suposed to get hot or was that a misinterpretation or something?

You can't transfer VC stuff to an SD card.

You can put VC games on an SD card, but supposedly you can't play them again except by copying them back onto the same Wii they were purchased on.

If a Wii is broken and then replaced, there's some way to contact Nintendo and get the previously downloaded games (and probably your Wii Points balance) again.

So basically I guess I should back up everything anyway and hope that they can repair it. If it gets replaced then it's more trouble for me.

When I tried it, my Wii gave me an error message saying something along the lines of "Virtual Console saves can not be copied to an SD card".

Have you upgraded your firmware at all? The newest firmware allows you to transfer VC games to an SD card for storing.

As far as I know it's up-to-date.

You know what? Now that I think about it - it wasn't my Wii that I tried this on but my friend's Wii. He didn't get a wireless router until Christmas, so it's possible that not all of his firmware was up-to-date when the attempt was made.

You can't transfer VC games through the same place that you transfer game saves, you have to do it through the other option available at the same screen you use to get into the area to organize your saves (even though they show up there, you just can't transfer them there.)

VC games are considered channels as far as the Wii is concerned.

The error you got is talking about the save state that the Wii holds for all VC games. That portion of game saves cannot be backed up on to SD cards. Battery save classic games (like Zelda) can have that portion backed up though.

Like Nitsu said, the actual game itself is considered a channel in the navigation.

I'm just starting to have this same problem. I'm getting white speckles on my Wii. I normally have Wiiconnect 24 on, but I unplugged over last night, however, I still have the white speckles. I'm going to put it verticle to see if that gives it more air and makes a difference. I already had to get my Wii replaced once, I don't want to have to do it again.

The speckles have grown each day, so I contacted Nintendo and she said the only thing I could do was to send it in to have it repaired, oh and it could take up to four weeks! They can't do advanced replacement because I have virtual console games download that apparantely cannot be transferred in any way. I've already returned my Wii once, I DO NOT WANT TO DO IT AGAIN. Does anyone have a better solution they can think of?
