Wii + Dolby Pro Logic?
« on: December 27, 2006, 05:53:11 AM »
Okay, I'm really new at surround sound, so pardon me while I ask some stupid/easy questions.

Here's my setup: I got a Pioneer HTP-2750DV Home Theater System (receiver + external DVD player) yesterday.  It supports Dolby 5.1 and Dolby Pro Logic II.  Now, I've learned that to get 5.1, you need to hook up your equipment via a digital cable (either coax or optical).  So, logically, since the Wii does not have a digital audio output, there can be no true 5.1 in Wii games.  This I know.  What about Dolby Pro Logic II?  This only needs the standard RCA Red/White cables, correct?

Now here's where I'm stumped.

My receiver is connected directly to the audio-out on my TV via the RCA stereo connection.  So if my Wii is connected to my TV via RCA, and my TV sound is being output to my receiver via RCA, does this mean that my I can get Pro Logic II?  Or do I need to route the sound from my Wii directly to the receiver?  Does it depend on the TV?

You setup should be fine.  Connecting the Wii audio directly to your receiver would allow for cleaner audio (having the TV as a middle-man will introduce a very small bit of noise), but Pro Logic II surround sound should still be functional as it is.

To be sure Pro Logic II surround is properly enabled:
1.  Set your Wii audio settings to "Surround" in the Wii Settings menu in your console.
2.  Disable your TV's native volume control (completely transferring volume control to your receiver), and disable any "virtual surround sound" effects your TV might feature.
3.  Make sure your receiver is set to Dolby Pro Logic II when your TV/game is the active sound source.
4.  Disable digital effects settings on your receiver, things like "Hall" and "Jazz" and "Chorus".
4.  If your receiver has the choice between Pro Logic II "Movie" and "Music" modes, etc, set Pro Logic II to "Movie" mode.  (some receivers will say "Cinema" instead of "Movie")

What games do you have that you can test surround sound with? (Wii or GameCube games)

I played COD3 in Prologic II and it was fantastic. I thought it was possible to get 5.1 out of the Wii, maybe I was mistaken.

ProLogic II is 5.1 surround sound..... it isn't neither digital nor discrete though
