Well, that is the most logical step for MarioKart, albeit, a little uncreative.

Doesn't mean I wouldn't buy it!

Well, geez, you wouldn't even need to list the characters - you could pretty much say it has the same or similar roster as any Super Smash Bros. game.

Though "Super Smash Kart", "Super Smash Tennis", "Super Smash Party", etc. could be kind of fun, I think Nintendo would avoid further oversaturation and crossovers of their games.  I could be wrong, of course...the money is there, they could easily sell a lot of any mega-crossover game - I for one would like to see an RPG in the Nintendo "universe", as such crossovers could be potentially epic if they're not silly or just for the sake of a "dream match".

A "Super Smash Kart" game should be significantly different from Mario Kart, unless it replaces all future Mario Kart games.  But if it's too different yet is still kart racing, that would be awkward, so replacing the series makes more sense.  And with the Wii remote's new control possibilities, Nintendo would do better by releasing another Mario Kart game using those controls and consider a "Super Smash Kart" only if they ever run out of ideas to add to a Mario Kart game.

I have suggested this be the next iteration for Nintendo for awhile.

Super Mario Kart is a brilliant game, but I am kinda bored with the level design recently.

I would love to explore more elaborate courses that actually go through the vastly different game worlds of Nintendo.

I think Super Smash Kart is the perfect name as well.  Opening up to new worlds, new characters, and new powerups means that a completely new breath of air for the game and designers would be opened up.

I do agree that Nintendo doesn't need to turn all the Mario Sports lineup into a Smash lineup though.

However, Super Smash Party sounds like a great idea.  You can have 6 game boards based on 6 different franchises:  Metroid, Mario, Yoshi's Island, Zelda, Kirby, and Wario Ware.

Personally, I think this is the ONLY solution for really changing and reviving the franchise with a new feel.

I think the problem is that it seems too "ultimate".  Sure, you can turn any existing franchise (especially the multiplayer Mario sports/party games) into a Nintendo-fest, but where do you go from there?

And to think that I so wanted the Twilight Realm in The Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess to be a product of Phazon which Samus combats in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, and also explains whatever it is that Mario is after as he hops across the galaxy in Super Mario Galaxy.  But maybe I was thinking it would be cool to foreshadow something across different games that would lead to an epic crossover.  Something simpler like a party game doesn't have to "explain" why and how everyone's involved so it's easier and more likely there but I don't think it's the solution to freshening every franchise.  Ironically it might make them too much the same.

Don't silhouttes of Pikachu and Link appear on the select screen of Mario Strikers Charged (or whatever the Wii Mario soccer game is called)?  I suppose they could start out slowly and see if people are receptive to such additions.  I also did think that if Link was in Mario Tennis, but with a racquet that has a handle like the Master Sword (the Master Racquet?) that it would look neat...  >_>

Exactly, it seems like the lazy, and as Requiem stated uncreative, way to try to make a series seem like an improvment over the last iteration. Also, it only seems special for awhile. If you start shoe horning it into everything, as JonLeung said, then the excitment starts to die as the consumer more or less just expects the "Smash series" to be whored out as much as possible. It makes solo things seem less interesting, while making giant series crossovers seem less eventful.

In other words, I say keep Mario Kart in the Mario Universe and make the next series fresh without resorting to just slapping the "Smash" name on it.

Well whatever they do, they need to make the RACING more interesting and not make it interesting to race.

To futher explain, I want them to bump up the skill level needed to successfully complete the race. I want to feel an adrenaline rush as my friend and I duke it out for 1st on the final lap. I don't need new insane items or wierd gimmicky features, I just want pure, fun, halarious racing that only Mario-kart can bring.

That said, everyone having a special ability would be cool, but I'd rather all the developer time be spent on level designs, new vehicles (Wii-airplane-boat-submarine-horse-etc..-racing anyone?), and such.

Level design can go A_LONG_WAY. I mean, who's to say that you can't make the players go through crazy situations? Maybe you have to avoid a tornado, or tsunami, or even deploy a parachute after jumping off a cliff (and being forced to land on the other side of a mountian range safely).

I don't know what I'm getting at.....

Who the hell is Captain Nintendo?

Anyway my only concern is that it will take away some of the magic of SSB.  Part of SSB's appeal is that it's the big Nintendo crossover game.  Take that away and SSB loses part of what makes it unique.  When a new SSB game is annouced there's a buzz in the gaming community.  When a new Mario spinoff game is annouced the response is more "meh".  It's played so it doesn't attract as much attention.  But having a huge crossover of Nintendo stars is a rare enough occurance that it isn't stale yet.  Turning Mario Kart into something like that is okay on it's own but I fear Nintendo would see how well it did and apply that formula everywhere.  I think Mario has lost some of his selling power because he's overexposed.  I'm afraid doing the SSB thing everywhere would overexpose ALL of Nintendo's franchises.  I think most of them are two steps away from that anyway and having SSB Golf, Tennis, Soccer, Mahjong, Darts, Pinball, Flight Simulator, etc. would just accelerate that.

If done in a minimal way I think it would work well for Mario Kart and an RPG where they have some excuse to mix all the Nintendo universes into one game could be an absolute classic if done right.  Most of the time I like the idea of spin-offs as a once-in-a-while novelty but then they release annual Mario Party games and I suddenly don't give a sh!t at all.  This applies to like every game company in existence, not just Nintendo.  Three excellent games released over a 10 year span is a million times better than 1 excellent game, 1 decent game, and 8 okay-to-bad generic games released in a 10 year span.  Less is more.

I would limit the inclusion of other game characters to 2 from each franchise...with still a slightly larger focus on Mario franchise characters.

My list:

Mario
Luigi
Peach
Bowser
Yoshi
Link
Samus
Zelda
Kirby
Olmar
Pit
Wario
King Dedede
Donkey Kong
Ness

That is a good solid list of 15 characters.  Perhaps have 5 hidden characters.

I'm sure Nintendo would love the idea of one game requiring the purchase of another game in order to complete.  See Pokemon and the Zelda Oracle games as examples.

Though this at least would be two different games and thus it would be worthwhile to own both.  It copies the Zelda Oracle format which I like.

How about a Metroid Kart or Zelda Party? I agree that combining all the franchises into one ala Smash Bros. works sometimes, but it could get boring if it is done all the time. On the other hand, it does seem that the Mario franchise dominates the spin-offs. I'd just like to see other franchises be spun off more...

I think F-Zero and Metroid are more "compatible"...I'm sure some of the characters (including Captain Falcon, maybe?) are space bounty hunters, are they not?  I think F-Zero may have specified the year and that Mute City was formerly New York, and that Samus is from an Earth colony (these are not spoilers, BTW) but I'm not sure if they ever mentioned the year (maybe the first game did now that I think about it) - however, we haven't seen Earth yet in a Metroid game so who's to say it isn't like the Earth in the F-Zero series?  Games have had weirder crossovers, like "Wario Blast! Featuring Bomberman" on the Super Game Boy.

Maybe it should be like comics.  Most of the time some characters are pretty much on their own, but the occasional crossover brings a few heroes together.  Massive and epic crossovers that involve everyone should be a rare occurence that don't redefine a franchise.  Super Smash Bros. is a franchise all its own that's a mostly storyless brawl, so that shouldn't be problematic to have one per generation.  But I'm talking EPIC, like an RPG or some huge adventure.  I don't read comics, I just have friends who do, but I guess I'm talking about like a DC Comics' Crisis On Infinite Earths-type scenario.  I don't think Nintendo would kill anyone off, but they could retcon things if anyone felt it was necessary.

Man.... JonLeung is on to sumthing. I think Nintendo has restrictions on what to do with characters because alot of different ideas that you guys are coming up with seem like they should have happened.
Eventhough "Nintendo Kart" might feel gimmicky, there is no doubt alot of people would buy it and it could bring perhaps a breath of fresh air to racing and fun to the franchise. Heck, ALOT of people feel Diddy Kong Racing is better and it might simply be off the strength of it being different.

Speaking of spin-offs... I've always wanted a traditional RPG Zelda... like an epic adventure where Link, Zelda and Ganon are in eventually in a group to fight some crazy evil. Someway somehow i see it working in my brain.
Where Can i find my Wii code?

There should be restrictions to franchise crossovers.  YES.  Which is why I stated that I couldn't see a Nintendo Sports lineup like Mario Sports stuff.  But I think a Nintendo Party game and a Nintendo Smash Kart are both acceptable.  That is the fartherest I would go....unless Nintendo partnered up with Square to make a Kingdom Hearts style RPG game in the land of Nintendo.

With the Wii saves being saved on the Wii, I could see games easily being made that unlock specials if you have multiple game saves and accomplishments.  I don't see this as a problem at all.  For instance I could see Smash Brothers Brawl having unlockable characters that you have to EARN, but then if you bought the game they are from you don't have to earn them...they become available immediately.

TerribleOne:  The idea of a Zelda spinoff RPG would be interesting.  The concept of Courage, Power, and Wisdom working together for the greater world good could be interesting.  The Triforce bonded and brought together for a common good would make an interesting story.

I still contend we need "Nintendo vs. The World" for the next Smash Bros, or at least the one after Brawl, and essentially open it up to all companies and their mascots.  That way - when the inevitable whining occurs re: new characters in Brawl - we'll be treated to essentially the biggest fanservice game in history.  Mario vs Ryu vs Sonic vs King of All Cosmos vs Cloud vs Chocobo vs Taki vs Spiderman.....etc etc etc.

Throwing in a tag team element would be pretty cool imo as well.

Me too.  I've wanted that since I first played Super Mario RPG.  It just seems like a natural spinoff to me.  And I want Square working on it.  The combination of Square and Nintendo in Super Mario RPG was just damn perfect.

I, for one, hope we NEVER see a Zelda RPG. Zelda games are about ADVENTURE, not talking to NPCs or juggling numbers and stats.

And... well... I never thought I'd be the one saying this but aren't there enough Nintendo franchise character milkings?

What about those... you know... new IPs that some Nintendo fans have been yowling for all last season? What about those complaints about Mario being whored out, and dilution of franchises, and all that Jazz? What about NEW games, and new experiences, and NEW characters?

Also, the only Zelda spin-off I would like to see is one that uses the same type of formula, but let's you play as a different character. That, or a Coop Zelda game would be cool too.
