The next canceled game: Sadness
« on: December 06, 2006, 03:10:15 AM »
NOTE: I may be severely wrong with this theory, so take this with a grain of salt. Life can be unexpected sometimes...

After reading about the cancellation of the Bob Ross game, I have come to the conclusion that the next Wii game to be canceled will be Sadness from Nibris.

Think about it, the game has been announced a while back and since then NOTHING has been shown. All we have is some artwork, empty promises and a video of what they think the game might be like. But no screens, gameplay footage or solid details. Nothing. That is a bad sign right there.

True, games do take a while to develop and Nibris could be just waiting for the game to be ready before they show it off, but considering the huge media hype surrounding the Wii right now they could've at least showed some gameplay footage or make an official statement.

So yeah, I think Sadness might go through development hell and be canceled, so don't be surprised if a year had passed and no news on the game has surfaced. Again, I may be wrong with this, but I find it weird that nothing of the game has surfaced.

For a while Planet GameCube (as this place was then) was blocked at work, so I had to go other places for daily "Revolution" news.  One such place that wasn't blocked was Revolution Report (now The Wiire) and the people on that particular site seemed to really have a thing for Nibris.  Nibris was mentioned constantly, and I heard oodles (of what little there is) of Raid On The River and Sadness than anywhere else.  This was a year ago or so, even!

I'm sure they'd be the first to break the news if something happened.

Sadness has potential, but you're right, many games further along than that have had the plugs pulled on them, so this may suffer the same fate.

I've had my doubts about Sadness since I heard about it. The company doesn't really have any merit as it is, and the announcement of a game seemed like a publicity stunt to me. Until I actually see something solid I'll keep the apprehensive stance I've had since the beginning (read: I really don't think that this game is in development or ever will be).

Most recently, didn't Nibris declare that they had a publisher and an official dev kit?

Yes, and they showed a picture of it along with a DS dev kit if I'm not mistaken. One guy from Nibris said that it's not up to them what they can show or talk about, it's their PR agent's call.

See that's the thing. They haven't even gotten official dev kits and they are already hyping the things they want to do with the game.

I wouldn't be surprised that if the game does get released it will not live up to its expectations because their ambition was far bigger than what they could actually do in the game (just like what happened to Ubi and Red Steel).

As Hostile Creation just mentioned, they have a publisher for Sadness.  At this point there's no reason to believe the game is vaporware.

The title of this thread scared me; shame on you.

Saying they'll cancel it is giving them entirely too much credit. It will remain out there forever. That's what vaporware does.

lol, bad choice of word for the topic title.... as the game hasn't been cancelled as of yet....

regarding the game, I doubt it'll be cancelled, I think that at most it'll be like DNF or Too Human....

Sorry about the misleading title. I've learned my lesson...

As for the game, its good that they finally got a publisher, but that doesn't mean the game will flourish anytime soon. Once they show off videos, screens, gameplay footage and demos then I will give them more credit.

And I still believe that if Sadness is released it will suffer the same problem Red Steel had and that is it was too ambitious for its own good, becoming a game full of potential but with too many failed ideas.

That was only with the help of Miyamoto, who completely overhauled the game when he saw it..

Now that you mention it, N-Space (developers of Geist), also received help from Miyamoto.

Retro studios had a bunch of veterans, ex acclaim and valve people(prolly the reason Acclaim died was because the good people left), alot of of the Metroid people left after the game, but nonetheless a good 3d metroid game had already been made, so the new people knew how to make one off example.

They had an announcement recently that it'll be out in 2009. I think they made the mistake of announcing this far, far too early on before anything had even been confirmed.

Also, don't count a game out just because no one hears anything about it. Games spend a long time going through their primary programming period during which there is generally little to nothing to say about the game.

I still don't think this game will ever see the light of day, and if it does, it will almost definitely be a suckfest.

It depends on what they try to do with it.

Personally, I think any new studio tackling a product in 3D is biting off more than they should try to chew. Start slow, like with a 2D game of some kind and then work your way up.
