PS3's PSone store
« on: December 05, 2006, 01:55:47 AM »
The first batch of PS1 titles is currently avaible for the North American market.

The current titles are:

# Cool Boarders - $5.99
# Crash Bandicoot - $5.99
# Hot Shots Golf 2 - $5.99
# Syphon Filter - $5.99
# Tekken 2 -$5.99

A PlayStation 3 is currently required to download these titles in order to play them on a PSP.

Even though the price may seem good for a PS1 game here are the drawbacks:
1. Gimped control scheme since....
2. It's only playable on PSP (for now) so these downloads are useless if you don't have a PSP
3. Not playable on PS3 (for now)
4. No multiplayer which is BS especially for stuff like Tekken 2.
5.  The game download sizes are approx. 125MB - 700MB so the games will eat away memory sticks fast.
6.  Games get locked after being sent to 5 different PSPs or 5 different times (Sony didnt elaborate on this one)

They are also useless since 1) I don't have a PS3. 2) Many other people don't have a PS3, and 3) The need to use a 500 or 600 dollar PS3 for a 6 dollar game is to play on a 200 dollar PSP is a better value that Nintendo's Virtual Console.  Sony FTW.  Nintendo is very v. doomed

Those are 5 top selling PSOne games, for $4 less than VC N64 games, and $2 than VC SNES games. Nintendo needs to adjust their prices, immediately.

I think it's decent, but the fact that you can't play on PS3 is stupid.  Also, if multiplayer is not available even on PS3, that's stupid too.  My writing is confused right now.

Apparently the "Play on a PS3" and "Download without a PS3" features are coming soon.

Honestly, having never owned a PSOne - once this is available for download directly on the PSP and the game selection improves, it might make it worth getting a PSP.  The price is definitely right - I agree with Brandogg, hopefully MS and Nintendo will follow suit and lower their prices.  I'm not going to pay $10+ for older games.

Having to download with a PS3 to play games only on a PSP is stupid.  It's like Sony took Nintendo's connectivity idea and somehow made it worse.

I too hope that Nintendo adjusts their prices accordingly but really they'll only do so if this becomes legitimate competition to the VC.  Because of the unnecessary (and obviously greed influenced) hardware requirement I figure this will never take off, or at least not as it is.

I want it to do well though to create VC competition.

This will be good once they start releaseing games that 1. I don't Own and 2. I can't pick up at GameStop for $2

I can't complain to much about Nintendo's priceing, infact I don't mind it all that much since I am purchinsing convenience by not having to have all my systems hooked up to play old Nintendo games. With out the VC If I wanted to play the orignal Zelda I would have to hook up my NES and play it on that, with the VC thats just one less system I need to have hooked up... well 5 less actually, 6 if I want to count my GameCube.
I wouldn't mind a price drop with the NES & Genesies games but the others I feel are fine. At atleast Nintendo has hinted that there could be updates to some of these games in the future.

Sony on the other hand, if you own the game already their is no point in downloading it again. Just take the game and put it in, I guess you could say backwards compatibility is the PSOne Stores worst enemy. Now once Sony starts putting up copies of games like Lunar which go for about $60-150 on eBay then we have a reason to start using it. But I see that being very very far off.

The biggest N64 game I've run into was 64mb, which was conkers bad fur day.

And by running into I mean rom.

Both Zelda's were 32mb each.

I don't. This has the potential to be a HUGE spoiler for Nintendo. Soon they'll update the PSP to be able to download via a computer, and update the PS3 to be able to play these games itself.

And, it's only a matter of time before the lucrative PS library opens up and third parties jump on, eager to reap money off of their lucrative properties. Unless Sony manages to screw this up. But if they do, then they're truly hopeless. This is a goldmine the size of which Nintendo and MS can never hope to match.

You have to keep in mind that Sony has created alot of enemies in the rare game market most of who are in the 2D RPG market. I'm more then willing to bet that Sony is going to have a up hill battle to get the rare games that would make the PSOne store worth using.
Working Designs the people who brought over Lunar to the US and holds the US rights to it are VERY pissed off at Sony right now and in a statement a few months back made it clear you will never see their name on another Playstation game.  They even went as far as blaming Sony for the near closure of their studio since Sony has such a large stick up their butt in regards to 2D games.

I don't think the PSOne library is as much of a goldmind as you might think, If anything Sony wishes they had Nintendo's library. You need to keep in mind that there really are not a whole lot of games worth downloading in the PSOne library, Sony won alot more based on Quantity over Quality. Sure their might me alot of games, BUT how many people will download Madden '95 - 2k6 or any of the 4 Ridge Racer games for the PSOne when they can just buy the latest PSP version? Why buy Tekken 2 for $6 when I can just buy the FAR better game of Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection for $25. There are a few gems in the PSOne library that will be worth buying, but its no sure bet that Sony will be allowed to have them on their store. The GameStudios own the games not Sony.

If Square were to tell Sony that they don't want their games on the PSOne Store then Sony can't put them up. We could very well see No Final Fantasy games on the store which is one of the few series that people would buy. Infact with the size limit I think we're going to see very few RPGs cause with the size limit that removes all Multi-disc games.

I also don't think you'll ever see the PSOne Store on the PC, that would just invite hackers and pirates.

Couple of random thoughts...

No two player and not being able to play on the PS3 kinda sucks.

The price however is not bad.

Notice how much space those games take up on a memory stick.
If Square ever wanted to release their PS1 colllection this is the place they would do it.

If anything I hope this creates competition so Nintendo will lower it's VC prices.

I just like the fact that some of you didn't realize that since its only playable as a PSP form these games on Sony's service will also have a neutered control scheme since theres no 2nd analog stick or a set of L2,R2,L3,R3 (L3 and R3 are the analog stick clicks).

I think we all realize this fact - but, if you buy enough games on each system, eventually the PS3+PSP+PSOne downloads will turn out to be a cheaper investment. Also, there's no C-Buttons for N64 games on any Wii or Gamecube controllers. Any games that actually used all 6 face buttons for non-camera purposes just don't feel right.

I think sin and punishment was pretty beefy in terms of size, but maybe RE2 took the cake for file size. I know games that used the expansion pack generally took more space.

doesn't the c-stick on the GC controller cover the c buttons on the N-64 controller. They are the same thing, conceptually nintendo just didn't pull off the second analog.

I don't really think the psone online store will do very well.  I had a playstation and I am currently buying psone games that were good but I never played or finished like Lunar/star ocean 2/ tons of Atlus turnbased games.

If you notice I don't think a single one of the games I am picking up is fully 3d.  That is because the typical 3d psone game has AGED HORRIBLY.  Besides the fact that these 3d games look like ass most of the popular ones have had sequels on the subsequent systems that play better and are visually appealing.

They also forgot to factor in the price of a Sony memory card; those things aren't as cheap as SD cards.  I think a 2 gig card will run you $50 - $75.

There USED to be alot of ps1 games worth getting. However, alot of them have been A) remade B) ported onto other systems

There are only a handful of games on ps1 i bet people are willing to play, and most of them are probably square titles, aka FF7. But square probably wants no part in a $6 pricing of their game, which they reap probably $4 from. They know if they remake ff7, or hell just re-release the damn thing they'll make more.

Most series on the ps1 haven't aged well in terms of graphics either, i mean the 64 is tolerable, but damn does the original RE look pixelated as all hell. Expect the only game worth downloading to never be downloaded, and thats symphony of the night. And yeah, i forgot, these games take up some massive space that will just eat into those gig packs for the psp, expect people to catch on quick to how much SUCK this whole ps3 psp transfer / psp memory stick is.

EDIT: when is say the graphics suck, i mean strickly for the psONE, i love all 2-D games so naturally i think the snes has better graphics then the psone. The only thing going for psone was the FMV, other wise all their games LOOKED like pixelated trash

One problem for Square is that their games don't fit in the footprint Sony has for their PSOne Store, Sony has limited it to 1 Disc games. From the info theyhave given us it seems like the games are just CD images and that we're aware of they might not be able to do disc swaping just yet too.

And I think your right Amodaus, Sqaure will ask for more then $6 a game, Sqaure still ships out copies of the greatest hits versions of FFVII-FFIX and they retail for about $20 still. I also think there a better odds right now of us seeing the PSOne Final Fantasy games on the DS then on the PSOne store any time soon. Square could sell Final Fantasy VII DS for $45 and people would be all over it.

Has Square even announced suport for the PSOne store?

Imagine buying a big library of these games (provided they are available) and finding out that you'd need loads of Memorysticks to carry all of them with you. Sure you can use one stick and rewrite it regularly butthat means you have only one or two games with you until you get to your PS3 again. Okay, considering the battery life of the PSP you have to return home regularly anyway...
