...and this time, Nintendo means it!

NINTENDO NEWS: FOUR NEW CLASSIC GAMES ANNOUNCED FOR WII SHOP CHANNEL

Dec. 1, 2006

Every Monday starting Dec. 4, Nintendo will add classic games to the popular new Wiiâ„¢ video game console's Wii Shop Channel. Four games will be added at 9 a.m. Pacific time on Dec. 4. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week's new games are:

Donkey Kong Jr.â„¢ (NES®, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points): Based on the popular arcade game, Donkey Kong Jr. is the sequel to the immensely successful Donkey Kong®. Players play as Donkey Kong's son, Junior, and rescue his dad, who has been kidnapped and imprisoned in a cage by Marioâ„¢. Players use their jumping and climbing abilities to clamber up vines and chains, gather vital fruit and keys, and open the cage to free their father. Make sure to avoid the pesky birds, nasty electric sparks and creepy chompers. Four different worlds filled with numerous climbing and jumping puzzles await in this timeless classic.

Victory Runâ„¢ (TurboGrafx16, 1 player, 600 Wii Points): Victory Run is a rally racing game, made up of eight different stages set in different countries from Paris to Dakar. Players can race across highways, deserts, savannahs and coastlines. In order to advance to the next stage, players must dodge traffic and cross the finish line within the time limit. Players can upgrade their race car with such parts as tires, gears, engines, suspensions and brakes. Driving on rough courses and hitting obstacles will cause damage to individual parts, so making repairs is critical. Choosing the right setup of parts may be the difference between winning and not finishing the race at all. So go out there and prove to the world that you have what it takes to take raise the gold cup in Victory Run!

Columnsâ„¢ (Sega Genesis, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points): Players test their hand at the ancient Phoenician game of Columns. Multicolored gems drop from the top of the screen into a pit. It is up to players to quickly arrange the order of the jewels into lines of three or more as they fall. If gems pile up and reach the top, the game is over.

Ristarâ„¢ (Sega Genesis, 1 player, 800 Wii Points): Greedy, an evil space pirate, has corrupted the kings of the Valdi System's seven planets and enslaved the people who live there. The plea for a hero is answered by Ristar, who uses his amazing extendable arms and courage to save Valdi from Greedy.

Well at least they are trying to get us up to what Japan is getting today.  Still got a lot to go though.  And why aren't we getting the GOOD titles from that list?
Currently Playing: Zelda Twilight Princess, Trauma Center Second Opinion, Guitar Hero 2

The only VC game coming out in 2006 (in North America) that I want is Gustar Heroes. All the games I actually want (like Super Mario World, Kid Icarus, and Paper Mario) won't come out until next year.

Wow... I had Ristar on the Game Gear (long story), and it turned out to be a real decent platformer... dunno if I'll buy it again though.

But Donkey Kong Jr.!!! Wow... you guys are rough. I had this game on Game & Watch and I LOVGED it! I think I'll get it now...

A glooming peace this morning with it brings;
The sun, for sorrow, will not show his head:
Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things;
Some shall be pardon'd, and some punished:
For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Sega and her Mashiro.

Pretty blah list, nothing really jumping out at me. I guess Rhoq will be happy, I think he mentioned a few times that he wanted DK Jr., or maybe that was someone else, either way, someone will be happy.

The Ristar I played was the Game Gear version and I'm not sure if that was a port or a new Ristar title, but This is what Ristar looks like.

Good, 'ol fashioned platforming happiness... with a nice relaxing old school, light, sweet soundtrack.

I just spent two hours playing Hanagumi Taisen Columns 2 on my Dreamcast with some friends. The original Columns isn't as good as HTC2, but I think it's still decent. I'll probably get it, since I can't cart around my Saturn (HTC1) or Dreamcast (HTC2) all over the place like I can with the Wii.

Kairon, Ristar doesn't look too bad.  Kind of interesting actually.  Don't know if it is worth the price though.

You hump things to death. Is it worth the price now?

But seriously, I'd buy it if it was the Game Gear version because I can vouch for that game's simplicity, and straightforward platforming essence. Sometimes I need nice simple games to relax with. I had an unbelievable amount of fun with Bonk, for example, just yesterday...

That Ristar video reminded me of renting generic SNES platformers at Blockbuster and West Coast Video back in the day. (:

SSB64 or bust...

Ristar = Unknown Gem.  REALLY good.

Look at the Gamefaqs reviews for it:

Seriously, pick the game up if you're bored.  I certainly will in a bit.

Yep, maybe I should get around to doing that.

AFAIK it was the original concept for Sonic.
