Colbert beats Peloski with his Wii
« on: November 28, 2006, 02:53:38 AM »
Hey all,

I know this might have been mentioned in different threads, but with all of the discussion about whether people are casually discussing the Wii (non-gamers, etc.) I thought this would be great to point out.

In one respect, it is similar to the Wii being featured on SouthPark, but I think the main difference here is demographic.

For those of you who don't know, The Colbert Report is a show on Comedy Central (11:30 et - rebroadcast the next day @ 8:30 et).  It is basically a "political satire" news show that sort of mocks Fox News (Bill O'Reilly?).  In other words, it is geared towards an older audience.

In this clip, Mr. Colbert is boxing against Nancy Pelosi.

I can't say that I recall any game console receiving this amount of positive, non-solicited, mentions in a non-gaming format (It even shows him playing it - sort of).

Enough said  (Thanks for the name correction-for some reason I always think of a relative named Porenski)

'Course, now that Reggie's in charge, who's to say what's solicited and what's paid for by Nintendo?  Colbert doesn't seem like the type who would go in for that stuff, but on the other hand, he didn't get his own daily TV show by being an anti-establishmentarian either.

Point taken -- of course if the mention was solicited, then that would go to show that Nintendo is truly taking a unique approach and reaching out to a variety of demographics.

It would be cool if Reggie went on the Colbert report or any late night talk show and showed off the wii.

Stephen Colbert is known as a geek and a gamer - he's admited to playing D&D quite a bit and he's a huge LotR fan.

I won't deny that this was clearly Nintendo paying off MTV networks (they do own Comedy Central, as far as I know), since they also showed off the Wii at MTV and Nickelodeon (Comedy central is also giving away Wiis). But this type of coverage actually HELPS.

So what if Nintendo paid off execs? It's not like Sony or MS haven't done it before. Plus, it gets massive mainstream coverage. This also proves that despites how un-mainstream the Wii is its still great enough that it catches everyone's attention.

As for the video, I agree with SB. Colbert's Mii was AWESOME.

Everyone, get to figuring how he did his Mii, PRONTO!

I'm just cynical about the media.  I notice a lot of sitcoms are starting to advertise stuff by making fun of how lame it is to advertise stuff in a TV show.  Ooooh ho ho!  You guys got me there!  Blech.  This may even have been Colbert's idea, what do I know?  I just don't like marketing.

Good for Nintendo though.

Hey, Colbert has a ton of fans, and even if he was paid off, him stating that the Wii is the "number one threat this holiday season" surely can't hurt the Wii's image in the public eye. I'm all for it!

Thanks for the link to the vid

MTV doesn't own Comedy Central. Viacom owns MTV, VH1, Comedy Central, CBS (or at least did, now they're 2 separate publicly traded companies, but still technically together I believe), CNN, Nickelodeon, SpikeTV, BET, Paramount Pictures...and a whole bunch of other crap.

I do totally want Colbert's Mii. I wonder what his friend code is...maybe they have it on colbertnation.com.

okay, the Today show one was obviously a payoff.  Colbert's show probably not, unless they personally came up with the gag and handed it to Colbert.

Paid or not, both South Park and Colbert were extremely funny and targeted to adults, and I think it is awesome that he went so far as to highlight one of the most interesting features of the Wii -- the Miis.  I mean how many nongamers that are starting to gain interest in the system would know about the "Mii" feature.  In my family, creating our Miis is almost considered a mini-game (So far we have me, my son, two of his friends, my wife, my mother-in-law, my nephew and one neighbor).

Oh, he does. He used to shill for Girls Gone Wild videos all the time. I have no doubt his wee time with the wii was paid for.

I have no idea how this stuff works... but I would assume that, after Nintendo's people contacted Colbert's people about paying for a Wii sketch, Colbert's writers wrote it up, and then Colbert's people showed it to Nintendo's people for approval.

A lot of the time a celebrity actually likes the product, but yeah, they would still be paid for the spot.  Think of it as a Wii commercial except it's intertwined into the actual program.

And I have no problem with Nintendo doing this.  That's what marketing is,a nd they didn't do it for years and years and suffered because of it.
