Wii Shop Channel hacked? Opera already on the Wii!
« on: November 25, 2006, 03:29:08 PM »
Just go onto youtube and type up "wii shop channel hack" and you'll get a pretty good list of people who've "hacked" their Wii's shop channel to display Google instead.

Infact, it's really not that hard. They simply redirected the DNS with some software installed on their PC's and told the Wii to use their PC's IP address as the DNS IP. In result, the web browser that the Wii Shop Channel uses now can browse the internet. It doesn't have flash, however.

The "Wii hack" community was hard at work, and they are designing portals, kinda like how the PSP community did it with Wipeout.

It's kinda cool, and I honestly don't think it voids any terms of service.. or does it?

This is definately interesting news, to say the least.

According to the WiiConnect24 user service agreement which you must consent to before being granted access to the Wii on-line network, it explicitly states that this type of "usage" is prohibited, might void your warranty and could result in having your Wii's on-line capabilities revoked, all at the discretion of NOA. Hack at your own risk!

I think you are safe. the way that is described by using a local PC to redirect traffic, you are never actually hitting the wii online network.

Personally I wouldn't want to the run the risk just to mess around with Google on the Wii. I realize people want to see if they can do it just to prove it can be done, but I wouldn't want to invoke the wrath of Nintendo. Reggie might take my name...

What is the point?  I mean anyone with the skill to "hack" this obviously HAS a computer with internet access, why must they have it on the wii?  Can't they wait the, what, 3 weeks or so until the official browser comes out?

With no keyboard support yet, it's pretty pointless. I wouldn't call it a hack.
I think it says on the box, 'No Hispanics' " - Jeff Green of EA

It's just guys showing off their know-how.  Pointless but cool.
That's my opinion, not yours.
