Mario 64 improved?
« on: November 22, 2006, 09:42:12 AM »
While playing Mario 64 (VC edition), I've noticed a slight difference in graphics.  Is it just my eyes playing tricks on me, or is the VC edition touched up graphically?  If so, can we expect other games to be as well?

It's running in 480p instead of the original 320x240 resolution, so it's going to look a lot better.

Not only does it look better, but playing the game with the Wavebird >>>>> playing the game with the N64 controller. 11/10.

If that's true, that's absolutely fantastic.  There's really very little reason for Nintendo not to bump up the resolution, and the framerates should stay steady at their intended 20-30 fps.

I can't wait until some graphical heavy N64 games are up for grabs so that some more recognizable comparisons can be made.  Had I a Wii, I'd gladly hook up my N64 and Wii to my computer to take comparison screenshots/videos.

This is something of much interest to me.

This doesn't surprise me.  Not only would the resolution be upscaled, but the Wii outputs far more color than the N64.  That alone probably takes care of all the old dithering.

Super Mario 64 does indeed run faster, since its not using N64 hardware, though some of the nifty effects are gone, such as the Invisible Cap Mario doesnt look like colored static as was on the original; just transparent. Try looking at the pyramid after standing on the four pillars. The debris and the explosion cause no slowdown whatsoever.

Also, maybe its just me, but the HUD graphics look less sharp than originally, also theres an emulation error at the beginning of the game. Look at the front door of the castle before walking on the bridge. You'll see Lakitu sitting at the front steps, before he 'warps' behind Mario to talk.

All in all, its the same game as was on the 64. No Luigi, no 30 extra stars, no 'game fixes'. Its the same game from 10 years ago.

Yes, but this gives me hope for some of those laggier, low resolution N64 games.

They may have enabled some sort of a diffusion option on the texture rather than let the low-res pixely textures show up in all their glory.

I heard the old games are actually running in their old resolutions and that's why they look better.

The only graphical heavy N64 games I can think of are by Acclaim and Rare. I'd be surprised if any of those appeared on the VC. Also World Driver Championship but again company no longer exiosts although Midway might still hold the rights tot he game.

I'm thinking of four-player games mostly.  It would be really cool to keep 24fps in "The Grid" on Perfect Dark while fighting 8 NPC's.

-- This brings up another issue I just thought about:  Will you need to buy a "Virtual Expansion Pack"?   Doubtful, but I'm a little suspicious.

Of course not. The expansion pack was 2MB of RAM...the Wii has 64MB...which makes me think some of the "bigger" (as in file size) N64 games might not be coming to the Wii because of this.

Did they fix that clipping glitch at least? You know the one where if you jumped against some paintings you fell through the wall and into some stupid level?

I know the DS version fixed this weird little glitch I exploited a lot in the N64 one where you could high-jump through the ceiling of a certain part of the spiral stairs to get up them faster.

Is it still possible to use the long-jump staircase glitch to get through the locked door and up the "endless" staircase?

Fixed.

Also theres no reason why a bigger file size game would have any issues on Wii Because you have 512MB on the Wii onboard and if you had to delete a game for some reason you could delete X virtual console game and redownload it free of charge(assuming you never close your virtual console account) or always back it up on a SD. I believe games as in file size on N64 maxed out at 512Mb or 64MB and I believe that game was Resident Evil 2.

Well that's 24MB 1T-SRAM plus the 64MB GDDR3 RAM, I would assume when emulating the VC games, the games are loaded into the 64MB GDDR3, and the system uses the 24MB 1T-SRAM for the Wii software itself. I don't think it can use both for storing a large ROM.

Edit - I'm not talking about file size. The ROM is loaded into RAM, a 64MB ROM would take up 64MB RAM.

Edit again - actually I guess I am talking about file size and where the ROM is loaded.

It doesn't matter much though, S-Video and composite both put out the same jaggies. It's just showing the 640x480 resolution being used, and apparently anti-aliasing as well.
