That really is B.S.  I love how the NPDs have slowly trickled down to nothing: first, we had the Top 20 every month; then the Top 10; then the Top 10 without specific platforms noted; and now absolutely nothing.  Brilliant, NPD!  This service was the only reason anyone cared about you.  I guess companies can still use them to find out how their competitors' games are selling, but we have no reliable data now to know how our favorite games are faring in the marketplace.

And I really enjoyed the monthly discussion on my various podcasts about the monthly NPDs, and that's mostly gone now.   :(
Well there's always that "one" site. ::)

The key word in that bolded sentence is "reliable."

And without NPD numbers to help with their estimates, they are going to be even farther off.

I will miss the NPD numbers, but we have to remember that they were choosing to give us any info at all. They are a business and they make their money by companies (like the game publishers) paying a subscription fee to get the data. The full reports are much more detailed, including a list of every single game (even if the game is 8 years old and sells just 1 copy that month), and they even break down sales by SKU (so Nintendo could see exactly how many of each color of the DSi sells, for example).

I remember reading one of the full leaked lists and it listed a single sale of Conkers Bad Fur Day on N64 in like 2004. It is ridiculously detailed. Makes me wish we could get hold of it.

The Wii only has two titles on the chart and is still being outsold by the PS3 in terms of hardware. No matter how you slice it that isn't looking very good. And as far as handhelds go, the PSP has 6 titles on the charts whereas the NDS only has 4 so that's not very good either. I recall the good old days from just a couple years ago when the NDS was kicking ass left and right in Japan, and the PSP was a non-entity. Man, things have really changed...

If you add it all up, Nintendo systems have 6 games on the chart, but Sony systems have twice that much. This sucks.
is your sanity...

Really doesn't matter to me considering these are games that are either: a) big budget JRPGs that the country will gobble up regardless. b) bi-yearly entries in popular Japanese only franchises. c) Monster Hunter.

Nice to see that Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions made the Top 10, as I had a lot of fun with that one even if the reviewers didn't.  I'm surprised to see that Other M even made the Top 10 for September, though if it only made #9 in (what's essentially) it's first month, that doesn't bode well for the game's sales in NA.  I get the feeling it wouldn't even be in the Top 10 if NPD didn't compress all the versions of each game into a single entry.

Frazier helpfully noted that if the top 10 were ranked by SKU, New Super Mario Bros. Wii would have cracked the top 10, as usual.

You know what that means...
If
5. Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep (Square Enix, PSP)
8. Metroid: Other M (Nintendo, Wii)
all made the Top 10 in combined SKU chart, then they obviously would have only been higher up the chart in a single SKU chart that also included NSMBWii

You don't know that for certain.  It's also quite possible that we'd see 360 and PS3 versions of some of the higher games up on the list taking 2 spots instead of one, like Madden NFL 11; Dead Rising 2; NHL 11; and perhaps even FIFA Soccer 11 (though I doubt it, given Soccer's relative popularity in North America compared to Europe).

I guess you're technically right....

but if Metroid: OM is already on the Top 10 as a single SKU and NSMBW would have made the Top 10 if they were all listed as single SKU, then MOM would still be on the TOP 10 since it obviously sold more than NSMBW. It might have been at #9(because NSMBW would've been #10) or stayed at #8 so I guess you are technically right, it might not have "obviously" been higher up on the charts.

NPD's decision came at a bad time, because I was really looking forward to M:OM's sales total for the month of September. Hopefully the numbers will get leaked soon, preferably to the fullest detail.

Metroid numbers are out, Other M sold 173,000 copies.

In comparison Prime 3 did 218,000 it's first month.  Of course the last 2D Metroid, Zero Mission sold 151,000 copies it's first month and the one before that, Fusion did about 200,000 it's first month.  So while Other M isn't doing as well as the Prime games, it is doing around what the 2D Metroids which it's more similar to did.  Plus we don't know if it's legs will be like Fusion or Zero Mission.  Fusion went on to sell over 900,000 copies in North America while Zero Mission only sold over 400,000.

So why not exactly a great start, it's a half-way decent start.  If it can at least manage to have legs similar to Fusion I wouldn't be surprised if we get another game like it in the future.  Of course I doubt a sequel will be allowed to have the production value budget that Other M did, but consider Other M's movies were one of the least liked parts of the game, I don't think anyone will care if they're gone.

No it's not.  Like I said before Other M is still putting up numbers similar to other games at this point in there lifespans and could have some decent legs as well.

The only part of Metroid that's doomed is Sakamoto being allowed to put lots of cutscenes and FMV's with voice acting in any future installments since I'd imagine Nintendo isn't going to be willing to spend lots of money on big production values for a Metroid game after Other M's start.  But considering that's what you hate the most in Metroid games you should be happy now since any future Metroid game from Sakamoto will have to be mostly gameplay since he won't be allowed to spend a lot on production values.
