Man, if the DS keeps it up for another year, it will be real close to surpassing the PS2 in LTD in the US.

I think the DS has already passed the N64 WW LTD using only US sales.

Why do I get the feeling that this will be the main focus of "analysts"? Instead of seeing the 1.2 million systems sold, or that it outsold all 3 of Sony's systems COMBINED, the analysts will just bitch and moan about Wii not selling as well as last year (when Wii broke the record for most consoles sold in November history).

Black, you are correct. The Nintendo 64 sold 32.93 million systems worldwide.

I don't think there is any doubt now that the DS will overtake the PS2 sometime in 2010 in worldwide sales. The PS2 was at 138 million in mid-August, the DS was up to 113.48 million on September 30.

Not surprise. A combination of being overpriced ($120) and almost universally negative reviews will hurt a game. I bet DJ Hero did bad for the same reason (overpriced and mixed reviews).

The Wii outsold the Playstation Family all by itself, it didn't need any help from the DS.

And that is the really amazing thing here. Not only did one piece of Nintendo hardware outsell all Sony hardware combined, but both Nintendo hardware did. So no matter how you slice it, Nintendo has Chuck Norrised Sony's dominance. And also, the 360 is selling more than any single Sony system.

I wonder how that blond guy on the Sony commercials is going to spin this.

A new CoD title comes out every year.  But Modern Warfare 1 was hailed as one of the greatest FPS games of all time.  Last year's game, World at War did great but not MW1 great.  So the anticipation for MW2 was huge.  It turns out it's pretty much the same game as MW1 from what I hear.  It's a great game but more of hte same.  Not much innovation.  I think they decided that if it isn't broke, then don't fix it.  It'll probably get around 14-16 million WW sales and NSMBW will surpass 20 million at some point in the next 3 years.

It is pretty good so far. I think it is overall better than Conduit.

I'm guessing a bunch of 3rd party shovelware bundled together at retailers for a very cheap price. otherwise known as "The Black Friday Bundle".

I am surprised that Uncharted 2: Among Thieves failed to make the top 20.

According to GameStop, the Wii "Value Game Bundle" contains Game Party and Cruis'n. I couldn't find anything on the DS one. I doubt it's a Black Friday deal, those are usually counted individually by NPD.

Remember, stores were opening at midnight and newscasts were reporting on MW2's release.  The game was incredibly well-hyped and the sales reflect it.  However it's likely that the majority of people who are interested in this game have already purchased it, so expect its sales to drop dramatically over the next couple months.

Now as for NSMBWii, it also released to strong sales (not as strong, admittedly), but it will continue to sell for years to come.  Long-term, it will outsell MW2 easily.

A similar event happened when MarioKart Wii and GTA4 came out around the same time.  MarioKart is still selling in the top 10!

I wonder how much MW3 will sell...

Core game. Those have extremely front-loaded sales, almost all of their final volume is shifted in the first month. NSMBW is a Wii audience game, those tend to have slower starts and grow in sales over time. That suits the news industry's hype of "best opening ever" which allows news stories about successes to be posted while the hype still hasn't worn off but in the end it's not terribly relevant.

Front-loaded sales also fuel the practice of price drops on unsold stock in later months.

The frequency of price drops, in turn, also lead more people to hesitate on game purchases (and the extra effect of generating more used games following the launch date, which many will depend on).

What a great spiral this industry has created.
