Okay, so there are still original GBAs being sold... but not a single DS Phat?

Yes. Hey, there's CDs that are labelled "doesn't work on computers", why not movies, too? There's too few people who use their PC for that stuff to make the MPAA care.

Like you said, too few people use their PCs for multimedia to give the big studios any leverage over MS. Didn't stop MS from reaching around backwards to screw their customers.

Quote

As it was said on another forum, give them more time. Most third parties thought Sony was a sure win this round and completely taken by surprise by the Wii's success. They didn't have enough time to create anything good from scratch yet, all they could do so far was get some ports or crappy games done, the good games take time. Of course some of them just suck so bad they couldn't make a good game no matter how much they try...

Yeah. People need to stop making grandiose long-term prognostications based on one holiday season's worth of sales alone.

Yea, it's all over. The Nintendo bubble has finally burst. The holiday numbers will be the last whimpering, before the complete collapse of the Nintendo fad.

I would be surprised to hear rumors of Chapter 7 bankruptcy by the end of fiscal '07.

It's screwing people over to potentially restrict all HD video playback for the sake of allowing commercial media playback. It's screwing consumers by restricting their fair use rights. And regardless, my other points stand.

here is some insight from JoshuaJSlone over at NeoGAF

Quote

Wii Comparisons: At week 40, Wii is where GCN was at 170.2 weeks (December 13, 2004), where GBA was at 35.5 weeks (November 21, 2001), where DS was at 48.6 weeks (November 3, 2005), where PS2 was at 53.4 weeks (March 6, 2001), and where PSP was at 78.1 weeks (June 4, 2006).

PS3 Comparisons: At 43 weeks, PS3 is where PS2 was at 4.9 weeks (April 1, 2000), where PSP was at 16.4 weeks (March 29, 2005), where GCN was at 18.8 weeks (January 18, 2002), and where Wii was at 6.1 weeks (January 7, 2007).

DS vs PSP: Weekly shares of 81.0 / 19.0, bringing total shares to 76.5 / 23.5.  If DS stopped selling and PSP continued at this week's rate, it would catch up in 598.9 weeks (February 24, 2019); another new record for that stat.

PS3 vs Wii: Weekly shares of 31.5 / 68.5; PS3's best week relative to Wii since the week of March 5.  Total shares now 24.2 / 75.8; PS3's recent good weeks gaining it a bit, so things have moved back to approximately where they were the week of July 9.  If Wii stopped selling and PS3 continued at this week's rate, it would catch up in 132.3 weeks (March 17, 2010).

PSP vs Wii: At this week's rates, Wii catches up to PSP in 139.3 weeks (May 4, 2010).

PS2 vs DS: At this week's rates, DS catches up to PS2 in 18.8 weeks (January 11, 2008) at ~20.97 million apiece.

Not just a low week for Wii.  This is DS's lowest since the week of March 26, and PSP's lowest since the week of November 13 last year.

It's also funny to note that week 40 was PS2's lowest week ever (so far): 3,306 according to Famitsu.

If Wii is this low for the next quarter or so, it will narrowly miss passing up GCN's LTD within one year.

MS passes 140K YTD at week 35.  Last year it took until week 49.

Some very interesting stuff

The reason I bolded the Wii comparison is because we all know how well the DS ended up selling, so if the Wii is ahead of the DS right now and we are just coming into the holiday season, it could be very interesting to watch the comparison from here on out.

And I bolded the PS3 comparison because wee all know how bad the GC did in Japan and the PS3 is nowhere near the install base of the GC yet, so that really isn't looking good for Sony or PS3 supporting 3rd parties.

Didn't DS sales start off a little slow? It's going to be really hard to maintain that sort of momentum in the long run, although the upcoming holiday season should surely help.

Also, it seems like big-budget PS3 games will cost much more to produce than the corresponding GCN games. It will be interesting to see how much of a profit publishers can make selling games to an install base comparable to that of the GameCube.

I wonder if JoshuaJSlone is a fan of SalesBot's work and where is he getting his numbers from or is he extrapolate from the current numbers.  If so then these are just based on average rates which, ironically enough, makes a fairer comparison.  If they are actually the numbers from that time then they are the exact numbers which makes them interesting but not as handy as a predictor.

Well I'd imagine Nintendo already has a few million Wii's in stock ready to ship for the holidays.  If they're willing to release Smash Bros and Mario Galaxy within a month of each other that means they must have enough Wii's ready because they know that those two games alone are going to drive demand up for the system bigtime.

I'm worried that with Galaxy and Brawl, even if Nintendo has millions of consoles, they won't be enough, which wastes the system-selling potential of each game. It's great that we're getting them so soon, but I wouldn't have minded if Smash Bros was delayed to next spring..

If you really love a game you would be willing for it to be delayed so it can be refined and improved. That's what makes Nintendo games generally better than those of other companies.

Would you really truly want them to start rushing stuff out the door?

There is a stark difference between a game being delayed without a definitive release date and a game being delayed . . . given a solid release date . . . then delayed again.

Evidently, the Financial Times has done their own analyzing and says Wii has outsold 360 worldwide... 9 millions Wii's to 8.9 million Xboxes.

Really? Only 8.9 million Xboxes? That seems kinda low. Wish we could get something more solid. But whatever.

That report was discussed, and derailed, here:

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/forums/messageview.cfm?catid=7&threadid=22219

Again, going from data out there, it seems too low on both accounts. For the 360's sake, I really hope they are above 10 million by now too, considering they shipped that many at the end of last year.
