Cool. That means Wii will break 3 million systems sold this weekend, if not already. PS3 is still a few weeks off from breaking 1 million.

So they're going to look at how well a spin-off does and then decide if they're going to bring the main franchise to the console? Talk about stupid. And what the heck happened to the whole "We put it on the system with the largest userbase" line they were spouting before as the reason for putting the last two titles on Sony systems?

Sounds way too much like double speak. As if they're still waiting for the floor to fall out from under the Wii and the PS3 to steamroll right over it. I'm pretty sure we all know that's never going to happen by now.

They did the same thing with the DS with Rocket Slime, and Slime Mori Mori and Monsters Joker.. DQIX was on the DS because Square just didn't have a choice.. With the DS absolutely dominating Japan, and with DQ a primarily Japanese-focused game, it just made too much sense. I mean, you can only shaft Nintendo for so long until you realise that you're shooting yourself in the foot by not supporting them.

26 out of the top 30 games are on Nintendo hardware, not bad. Honestly, all that is left is for Nintendo to sweep the Top 30. Sweeping the entire Top 50 is gonna be a bit harder. There are always new games coming out.

DQ Swords sales are not bad at all either. Weren't first day sales in the neighborhood  of 200,000? Then the 36,000 units sold during the rest of the week, I guess, means it sold out pretty much completely.

Square-Enix is proving that original third party games can sell well on Nintendo consoles. Hopefully other companies follow suit, and if they do then we could actually see a top 30 of games for Nintendo hardware in Japan.

4 games from dominating all 30 is frustratingly close.... it is within Nintendo's grasp.

The difference between Famitsu & Media Create are rather large when it comes the the DQS #'s.
Famistu has it @ 200k 1st day / 300k+ 1st week, media create undertracked it I think(hope). Expect good second week #'s from MC and  lower #'s from Famitsu.

PS3 has only sold 1 million according to Famitsu, but since we go by MC its all a lie. Sony has sold no more than 15k this week, and it will take them atleast another week to hit the 1 million mark.

edit Looks like MC has fixed their DQ:S mistake and now has the opening week up to 305k. They must have forgot to count a few retailers out there.

I think Sony paid them to annouce that since they wanted to be at 1 million b4 the Wii hit 3 million.
I don't even think PS3 has hit 1 million even by Famitsu's own weekly hardware count. Especially not 1.1 million

So when will the Wii be considered a success and not a fad?

Is it when Wii surpasses the Xbox 360 is sales?
Is it When Wii software figures compete or surpass Microsoft and Sony's numbers?
Is it when Wii 3rd party software figures compete or surpass the competition?
Or is it only after the Wii manages to sustain a constant and growing led over the competition?

No, truth is...to hardcore gamers and many 3rd party developers the Wii will never be considered a success.  Because the technology is old, and the graphics aren't "competitive" with the other consoles.

Well, Xbox 360s big break is going to start with the launch of Halo 3, and continue through this holiday season.  I will dare say that it will be its last chance to truly secure the market lead it has established.  And let me just say Microsoft has a great list of games to compete...but I wonder if they are not going to all compete with the same audience and market and canabize eachothers sales...or if it will actually attract new hardware sales.

Wii on the other hand, will continue to have a great year and led into next year...Nintendo even has some of their biggest guns coming out this year, and unlike Microsoft Nintendo's lineup of big games is quite diverse.  Metroid Prime 3, Galaxy, Brawl, Battalion Wars 2, and Forever Ocean all these games fill a different genre gap in the Wii launch lineup...and even hits niche markets.  Wii's 3rd parties take care of the more mainstream gaming audience with Madden, Medal of Honor, Raving Rabbids 2 ect...

Exactly

Microsoft can never be the market leader because their systems are nothing more then a niche for Western style sports, shooters and action games.  To the rest of the world and even here in America, Microsoft doesn't have enough variety to appeal to the average gamer because the average gamer has many different taste.  When your biggest title, Halo 3 is a first person shooter, and your other big titles like Bioshock are also first person shooters, who exactly is that going to appeal to besides the hardcore Western gamer?

This is why I see Nintendo easily dominating this fall even against Halo 3.  Because Nintendo has the variety to appeal to nearly all types of gamers, while Microsoft will be appealing only to their already niche audience.  Even though Halo 3 has huge selling power, Mario Galaxy and Smash Bros combined have much more.  And the fact that Mario Galaxy and Smash Bros are coming out within a month of each other and just in time for the holiday season, I see those two games creating an unstoppable juggernaut in sales this Christmas.
I’m gonna have you play every inch of this game! - Masahiro Sakurai

Well here is another question to ask.

All of the games Microsoft has appeals to the market they already have.  There may be some gamers waiting for Halo 3 before plunging into a system...but really 10 Million gamers is their standard base, and I don't see gigantic jumps this holiday season.

On the other hand, Nintendo Wii sales have been strong from two markets, the Nintendo fans and the expanded market.  And since the Wii has been sold out and difficult to find that means these markets are not tapped yet.  Many Nintendo fans have been waiting for Mario or Brawl...but many more hardcore gamers have been waiting to make the plunge for these games and second generation third party games.

As such I really see the Wii picking up steam throughout the Summer.  Starting the end of July Nintendo is going to be releasing one gamers game each month until next year.  As well, starting in September the flood of 3rd party holiday releases will start.

This is vastly different to Microsoft whose lineup is very heavy for winter releases in November, and not as spread out.

I can afford to pick up one game a month...I can not afford to pick up 3-4 games a month.  I am sure many gamers will be in the same boat I am in.

I am in the same boat.  I can definitely afford 1 game a month.  I can't justify buying more than maybe 2 games a month though.  Of course, only the games on the Wii and DS are really exciting me at the moment (of course, that may because I don't have the other systems), except for maybe Blue Dragon and I'm not getting a 360 for one game, especially with it possibly breaking on me pretty quickly.

VGChartz or not considering the unconfirmed failure rate for the 360 (30-35%) Wii probably already has a larger installed userbase as it is, and may have had for a while. You have got to know that MS is including replacement systems in their total. Both Sony and MS will do anything and everything to fudge their numbers whenever possible. Of course neither one will admit that.

No, it's is not known, if not doubtful, that they count a replacement as 2.

Their 360 number is probably a little low, but it doesn't really matter. They'll probably pass 360 before the holidays. 360 will take it back over the holidays (by virtue of having supply) and then Wii will take it back again for good sometime in 08. IMO.
