We're also somehow still locked in this "screenshot" mentality, wherein screenshots determine quality and therefore success.

Allow me to show you what I mean.  There is all of this talk that there has "never been" this huge a gulf in graphical power.  Hogwash.

This is Rayman.  PSOne launch title.

This is some unknown N64 launch game.

Sweet jezzum crap!  How in the world could the N64 lose?  Hell, one of them is 2-D!  Obviously the developers are going to see that the N64 has the graphical power that the hardcore set wants and the PSOne is going to look dated and flaccid.

Want more?

Kessen PS2 launch title (eeeyugh)

Random unknown GC launch game.

Holy peanut butter headphones!  Look at Luigi's mansion with it's self-reflection and and dynamic lighting, tri-spec linear maps, doodads and screw-dads.  And then look at Kessen, with it's exclusive ****-Filter(tm).  Holy god.

Now you are right, I am being selective, but it's not like those that bring this argument up aren't.  Far Cry Vengeance is going to be some kind of pariah forever, but what I AM demonstrating is that screenshots never decided anything.  The developers that are telling you that graphical power matters are actually trying to convince themselves by seeing if you agree.  They've invested heavily in this HD-Future and are reluctant to acknowledge the same backwards steps needed to survive that happened with the PSOne and PS2.  Some of them are just going to have to woken up with a hammer.
It's time you saw the future while you still have human eyes.

... and those eyes see a 3DS system code : 2750-1598-3807

In about a week I can put screenshots behind me.  Screenshots will only be good for avatars and celebratory wanks.  My future is in progressive scan video for all.

Great post, Deguello. Kessen for PS2 looks like the inside of a public toilet.

A few years from now when the PS3 is in a distant third place it might be funny to have a screenshot of one of the PS3 launch titles compared to Wii Sports and the world can marvel at how the mighty PS3 goliath was no match for the humble Wii with its slingshot and stone.

I think that the "hardcore" game journalists have even been drifting away from the gaming audience before the Wii.  They are the ones that mark games down for things like not having 5.1 sound.  I can hardly tell the difference and honestly don't even know or care what supports it.  I doubt almost anyone outside of the elite tech geeks care at all about surround sound a and not surround sound b.  They pick out little things that only the elite even have available  to rag on games.  I can understand wanting widescreen, especially now that I play on one, but it shouldn't knock a game down so much in the score, all they need is a line that says "no widescreen" next to graphics and the widescreen tv owners who care about it will avoid the game.  There was no reason to mark the entire game down for it in the past.  While HD is more important from different versions of surround sound it is still only available to a minority of people yet the game "journalists" have been acting like everyone has it and it is absolutely necessary.  They couldn't be farther away from most gamers in what they care about and the actual equipment they have available to play with.

It isn't just that the Wii is taking away gamers from the hardcore, these people have been drifting away from the regular gamer and never realized it until a new system appeared that showed them.

These applecore gamers seem to genuinely believe that if Wii takes first place, the entire game industry will be nothing but minigame collections. Just like the DS.

Damn you, Waggle Wand!

BTW, if you're going to do screenshot comparisons of launch games, you should've gone with Rogue Leader. The difference would be even more staggering.

The problem with Surround sound or not Surround sound is its very hard to find a game, or movie for that matter, that really pays attention to sound and uses it to its full potential.  I can't think of a recent game that has wowed me in the sound department but if the developer does pay attention to sound it can make a big difference in the immersion factor.

That screenshot looks like Luigi's Fun Time Dress-Up Adventure.  Luigi's Mansion really impressed me with its lighting.  When lightning struck, there'd be huge shadows of stuff in the room cast on the walls.  And of course Rogue Leader was one long eyegasm.  Thinking back, it seems like Nintendo used to always have a really good game that really showed off the hardware at or near launch.  With the Wii, they concentrated on showing off the control hardware instead of the graphics hardware, but we're all used to having the graphics hardware paraded in front of us instead.  It's no wonder longtime gamers are confused.

Ceric, you're right about sound.  I can't remember the last time I was really wowed by good sound in a movie.  I only really notice it when it's bad, like in most action movies these days that mistake volume for quality (Here's a tip to any Hollywood sound mixers reading this: A locker door closing should not be as loud as a plane crash).

Last time I was wowed at sound was when I was a real PC Gamer and just got my Audigy 2 and played some FPS.  Directional Audio for the Win.  Its definetly a lost art that I wish be found again.  I hope in S2B2 they go the distance with more then just the orchestrated score, especially with online.  I can see how it could be hard in a four player match on the same machine.  Though in online and single player you would be the only combatant who sound out the speaker matters.  Lets say Mario and Samus are duking it out to the left of the stage and you and Kirby are duking it out to the right.  Well Mario and Samus shouldn't sound as loud and feel to the left sound wise.  Things like that really add to the immersions.  Another example would be a missile from Samus traveling from the left to the center speaker while getting louder as it come near and suddenly switching to behind when you dodge. (Actually I guess front to back be better. Considering your character facing.)  Anyway, sound.  Something that needs worked on.

This week is gonna be on of the few chances the 360 has to pass the PS3 in hardware sales before the imminent price drop that has to come sooner or later for PS3.

You kind of prove my point here since you obviously care a lot of the sound and notice more then your average person.  Most people probably don't even have surround sound speakers much less are able to tell the difference between the kinds.  Game reviewers will knock a game for that and yet when a game like Dead Rising comes out and non-HD owners are actually hurt they never mention it.  They don't have the concerns of the typical gamer and don't even realize them.  This is the first time when extra hardware has actually mattered and they act like everyone has this (they don't) and if they do care as much about it as tech geeks like them.

Is Ninja Gaiden Sigma a remake of the xbox version with new content or is it something new?

Methinks its a remake if memory serves.  More people would car if it wasn't for the back progression of Music to MP3's.  Seriously enough folks even RTS games, Warcraft3 is a good example, benefit when attention is paid to sound and the right equipment is used, which for PC gaming in most case a set of Surround or really good headphones work just as well. (They really do do a good job with Headphone surround its sort of surprising.)
Oh, well...

Anyways, Still more varied that what has been the norm in Japan Software.  I also like to note that Thursday is when we normally get the hardware numbers and from the source of them the software numbers might also be going that way.
