Whats up everyone?
Just wanted to officially check in even though I'm not a nOObie to this site or these forums.  I have actually been lurking these forums since back when there was only one thread and it was extemely long.  I can't remember what the site was called way back then (I think IGN was still N64.com) but it was b4 they knew what the GameCube was and everything was all speculation. [/reminiscing]

Oh and my first screen name to this forum b4 they switched formats was ShadowMan1 (not that I ever really posted, I was a lurker, and have continued to be up until recently)

No I haven't got it yet.  I'm waiting for the Aussie release, which should be within the next few months.

But........I did DL the Very Short Movie and loved it!  Been watching it over and over.  Even my sister saw it and got a laugh out of it (which was a surprise since she doesn't watch anime).

Actually, I'm not sure if it's "OK" that you saw the short movie before the actual series, since it's a compilation of gags [aka spoilers] that appear throughout the entirety of the show.  But then again, it's possible the Very Short Movie was intentionally released as an ad to promote the TV series via JPN theaters.  It's a really good thing it doesn't spoil *THE BEST* incidents.

I first stumbled upon the series about a year ago, looking for fansubs of 'Ai Yori Aoshi' on [p2p network].  After I got the last Ai Yori Aoshi episode from a particular user with an awefully fast connection, i decided to checkout what else he had -- about 10 fansub eps of a oddly named series unknown to me called "Azumanga Daioh".

Man, that first ep caught me TOTALLY off-guard, and things just went "downhill" from there on. *_*

Remind yourself to never experience the english-dubbed version of the show.

I read somewhere the Very Short Movie was a promo released in theaters, so I thought it wouldn't spoil it for me.  I sure hope it didn't.

Is the english-dubbed version that bad?  I don't watch anime in dub unless on it's on Cartoon Network (lol), but it didn't sound too bad from the trailer I DL from ADV's website.

Actually, the english dub is fairly decent, but there are some key flaws that can [will] undermine the original humor of the series.  The other downside is how it'll affect your general perception of the cast (as with any dub).

First, the series' "cute-factor," which you've probably witnessed a bit of in the short Movie, is central to series (at least to me).  Azumanga makes cuteness seem cute, and even makes stupidity seem cute.  The JPN voice cast simply sounds natural to the characters' actions, appearance, and AGE.  While the english dub is decent at best, the genuine Japanese Chiyo-chan is for the most part incomparable/irreplacable, which the english cast cannot live up to.  The next downer is Osaka, the girl who messed with Chiyo-chan's pigtails in the short movie; in Japanese she sounds slow/spacey/stupid but at the same time a strange childish (with a high voice) kind of cute.  In english, she's got a generic mid-western american accent of a woman in her late 20s -- too deep, too mature, and i don't know how the hell they came up with that accent.

This leads me to the next point:  some of the finer moments in the series are based on the premise that these girls are Japanese, who only speak *Japanese*, and have very limited knowledge of english.  Various comedy bits are derived from the cultural differences, with some things specific to Japanese language/culture that shouldn't be "translated to english" in the first place -- it should be left alone.  They attend an English class (shown in the short movie) at their highschool, and of course they question ("play with") aspects of the language because it's foreign to them.  Now, if it was all english-dubbed, those cultural barriers get knocked down, and you've got english-speaking girls having "japanese" questions towards English -- it's just doesn't seem appropriate anymore, and would throw the comedy off (unless the script was re-written).  Osaka's out-of-place mid-west accent would make things even worse.  Then there's other bunches of cultural (other than language) tidbits that us westerners wouldn't be able to relate to.

Another thing the JPN cast has over the english cast:  they shout and scream better -- adds more to "teh funny".

-- In short, I don't think you'd get the "complete" Azumanga Daioh experience if you saw it english-dubbed.

You make a good point about it being based around a English class.  I only got to hear Chiyo-chan and Yukari English VA in the trailer.  Anyway, I'll be sticking with the sub, like I do like 90% of the time.

Anyway, we better stop talking about Azumanga Diaoh (or continue in the anime thread), as it will confuse the newbies!
