Thank Goodness...
« on: November 10, 2006, 04:19:55 AM »
With IGN and GameSpot getting their Wiis and several games today, it means we should be able to have Reviews available by launch.  Or at least impressions that allow us to make good judgment on launch games we want to purchase.

Obviously most people will be purchasing Zelda along with the Wii, but finally questions about Excite Truck, Red Steel, Call of Duty, Super Monkey Ball, Trauma Center, Madden...and more can be answered.

This is great, because I don't remember a launch that occurred where we could actually buy games with reviews available to compare.

This is something I think Nintendo has done RIGHT...and I am curious to see how the games get reviewed, and which games came together the best.

I hate reviewers (generally speaking) and don't trust a word they say.  I already know what games I'm going to buy.

I'm getting Zelda, but I am clueless as to what my second game will be.  Well, not clueless..it will probably be Rayman, but I want more info.
That's my opinion, not yours.
Now Playing: The Adventures of Link, Super Street Fighter 4, Dragon Quest IX

I'm not sure between Zelda and Rayman. It really depends on if I beat FFXII before the Wii launches. Two epic adventures seems a bit much. Hopefully the reviews of Rayman will back up the positive previews I have read.
I'm a fan, not a fanboy.

I usually don't go by reviewers opinions alone.

But when you are limited to number of games you can get...and there are some great exclusives available, you need some additional information a review can provide for games.

Like Games I want would be:

Rayman
Super Monkey Ball
Red Steel
Metal Slug
Excite Truck
Zelda

(Not in that order)

So I can only get 2 maybe 3 games...so I need to use reviews to help.

In the past, I've been leery of IGN's reviews because it seems like they're grounded in money hats.

But with the Wii favor all around, I don't think that will be an issue, especially because people will call the reviewers on their BS because so many will be buying Wiis and the software going up for review.

Reviews are good for knowing if there are control issues, or if the games are short or something didn't come out right you can know.

In the end the ultimate decision is up to you, but for the games I am really interested in, I usually wait until I read a few reviews (IGN, Game Spot and reader reviews at Game Rankings) and use that to make my final decision.

Reviews are good for knowing which titles to avoid.  Often games are overrated more than underrated so when a game is getting sh!t on by everyone you know not to purchase that without playing it.  They're also good for confirming a title you're interested in is decent.  Moneyhats will affect titles they suggest you buy but you weren't interested in more than games you really want and just need a quick recommendation on.

I ignore review scores.

It's muchy more useful to actually read the review and comprehend the reviewers complaints and viewpoint, then use that information to see if the movie... er... game, will suit my tastes.

For example, sometimes games and movies get bad reviews, but upon closer inspection all the complaints are things I cannot care less about. Conversely, sometimes games and movies get great reviews but upon reading the reviews exact words I realize that I'd HATE the product.

I only read through reviews that have suprising scores. If Zelda: Twilight Princess receives an 8.5 somewhere, I will read through the review. If Bubble Bobble Revolution receives a 9.6, then I will read the review and never visit that site again.
Thanks for listening.

BattleTanx: Global Assault for the N64 got like a 5.3 by IGN, but my siblings and I thought the multiplayer was a blast, regardless of their complaints of poor graphics and terrible singleplayer.

Kohler's got some Wii impressions up. He went to Ubisoft to play some stuff, and recently got a Wii in the mail.

Ps.- I realize its probably looks trolly of me to be posting a link in my second post ever, but I've been a reader for a while and Kohler was on the second RFN podcast, so I'm guessing he's a PGC friend.

I am really, really impressed with Wii's slot-loading disc tray. Not so much that it works, but that it works so smoothly for GameCube games. No matter where you insert the mini GC disks -- in the middle of the slot, towards the top, towards the bottom -- it grabs hold of them and eases them in smoothly. Love it!

Fantastic!

Already decided on Zelda and Monkey Ball. Not interested in reviews, just the facts.
