Hmm this has been around for a while.  Mine has one.  I plan on sending it in a month before warranty is up and hoping to nab a black one.

Yeah, mine has the same crack.  I'm wondering if Nintendo will bring out any more different colors before my warranty is up.  I'd like to see the DSL in Red in the US.

Mine too.  Just noticed that.  How long is the warranty period?

I've heard people say that IF Nintendo has to replace your system entirely AND you put a polite note in asking for a different color (that is readily available), they often oblige.

My young cousin's unit... apparently happened b/c he "closed it on his finger, honest"

My guess is that it got dropped or that it was smacked against something.

The unit was still functional, but difficult to play as the two halves would flop around on the right side.  The unit was eventually sent to Nintendo and repaired for around $50 I believe.

Shecky,

I had similar damage but for a different reason.    My DS always had 2 stuck pixels but I could live with that.    It also had the slightly loose/spongy feeling touch display but could live with that.   After a month or so it developed a crack on one hinge.    Since I heard it was only cosmetic I didn't really bother to do anything about it.    Soon, the other hinge developed a fine crack.   Still, didn't bother to fix it.   One day when opening it up the darn hinge popped off.   Looked very similar to your photo.

Was very disturbed because I was worried that Nintendo would think I had mistreated it.    I'm a 40 year old man with no kids.   I've treated this thing like a baby.    Also kept in a nice case and never dropped.   But there's no way to actually prove that, I suppose.

Anyway, Nintendo begrudgingly replaced the unit.    They said they didn't usually cover damage like this.   Oh well.     By the way, the replacement unit has a stuck pixel as well :-)    But I can live with it.     But if and when next hairline hinge crack appears, I'm sending it back immediately !

Oh, and I do have a second DS (my wife and I wanted our own) that I bought at launch as well and it has had zero problems ( knock on wood ).

Mine got a cracked hinge.  I didn't notice it until about a month ago.  I probably won't send it in because it's not hurting anything.  If in a few years the crack ends up ruining my DS, then I'll be pissed I guess.

Knowing my luck my DSL will crack the next day after my warranty ends.  I have a friend that worked for Nintendo while they were shipping out the DS Lite and he told me that ALL models will eventually have this problem.  There was a design flaw or something.  Could be planned obsolescence.  I really wouldn't want to have to buy a 3rd DS.  But of course it's a pain in the butt to send your system in to Nintendo to be repaired / replaced.
