Read it and weep.

Likely include extra bells and whistles?

Hmmmm.
Silly monkeys; give them thumbs they make a club and beat their brother down. How they survive so misguided is a mystery. Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability to lift an a eye to heaven conscious of his fleeting time here.

It's just DVD playback.. that really doesn't matter anymore. This will probably be like the Panasonic Q.

*shrug*  I have to agree.  I have a DVD player I don't mind that my console doesn't.

I hope the Japan version doesn't look extremely different.

Personally, I think it's stupid for them to leave out DVD playback, considering their non-gamer strategy and the fact that the cost wouldn't not be that high for them to implement it. I need a new DVD player with progressive scan, and if I could get one when I buy a Wii...

so yeah, I hope they just throw it in as a firmware upgrade or something...

anyways, I don't think they'd release a special edition Wii whose sole extra feature is DVD playback. What's the pt, especially in Japan, where everyone and their mother already has a DVD player (or PS2)

Including DVD playback means paying a liscencing fee to the DVD consortium (or whatever it's called).  I still think the idea of a dongle to unlock playback, as they originally considered, was cool.
That's my opinion, not yours.

Along with the european "region" isuses, this is going to mess me up as to which version of Wii I want to get. I could do with an extra DVD player.

Yeah couchedmonkey, I know that they have to pay a licensing fee. But damn it, they're making money off this thing already; they could afford to take a small hit. It can't cost that much to license; witness the prevalence of $40 DVD players....this prolly gonna cause me to wait on the Wii just a bit more (well, actually, I don't care that much...but most of discretionary $$$ this yr are going toward the Lumenlab Evo)
