The huge hole in Nintendos lineup (driving games)
« on: October 23, 2006, 05:18:33 AM »
I'm talking about racers. I know about Excite Truck, but i'm talking about realistic ones, ones that require use of the brake. The last good realistic racer on a Nintendo system I can even remember is F1 World Grand Prix back on N64, which wasn't even all that good.

Unfortunately GC had absolutely nothing, which is a shame because it has the perfect controller for comfortable smooth driving, while playing racing games on PS2 I keep wishing they were on the GC instead because I hate the dual shock. If Nintendo wants to be market leader this issue has to be addressed, I want any kind of realistic driving game, a Moto GP game, an F1 game (actually I blame Sony for buying exclusively the F1 license), something like GT, it doesn't have to have brand name cars, just anything to drive with no stupid powerslide drifting or boosts.

Xbox has PGR / Forza / Moto GP etc. Sony have pretty much every kind of racer under the sun, Nintendo have nothing at all. Is this going to change or will people like me end up buying a 360 or PS3 as well?

If a third party makes a good realistic racer for Wii, it will basically have no competition at all and could sell very well.

Weren't there rumors awhile back that there was a racing simulation under development from Nintendo for Wii? Personallky I wouldn't be surprised if we did see one.

N64 had a few of these (World Driver Championship?) but as for Wii, who knows?  Anything could happen.  It will depend on third parties, since Nintendo doesn't seem that interested in a game like this.
That's my opinion, not yours.

Not an exclusive.  Still better than nothing but to have a really balanced lineup there needs to be more filling a genre than just multiplatform titles.

I caught a review on X-Play of a PC game called Ship Simulator.  Or the title was something very similar, as in incredibly plain and yet incredibly accurate.  It was a ship simulator.  Like, big boats.  Which is boring because most ships don't even go very fast.

I know I've said this a few times in the past and you guys are probably sick of seeing it by now, but...World Driver Championship was one of my absolute favorite N64 game. Hopefully, Midway will eventaully make it available on the Virtual Console.

The only racing games I like are the ones that don't focus on being realistic. That said, I do love wave-race (which I thought was realistic), but that didn't use cars.

I would love to see an airplane racing game.

I say leave the realistic racers for the consoles that are attempting to recreate realism.

I think the problem now for racing fans is that a realistic racing game on the Wii might be awkward.  You now have a control that can simulate a steering wheel, but clearly not enough, if the steering wheel's not fixed (as in "anchored" in the middle).  It'd be like the "uncanny valley" (there's that term again) of control.

Or you could just use the nunchuck analog, it is pretty uncertain how something like this would control on Wii, but it could be done with the millions of different control options we have.

Graphics and realism have already reached a peak in racing games, all they can really add now is useless crap in the background that you don't even look at.

I lost interest in GT Pro Series when I found out it has drifting and is more of an arcade game, it's a good experiment game though to test out the "steering wheel" controls.

I'd say that's likely considering the Excite Truck developers made one for GC.

I guess that overall the lack of driving games didn't matter on GC, since it wasn't a big popular platform, but with Wii there's going to be a lot more people with the system besides the normal gaming hardcore and I think it's important to have everything covered well.

That's kind of true.  Unless you like looking at the back of your car all of the time, most things go too fast to be seen.  And while things like smoke and dust probably look really cool when rendered correctly, I think the true joy of racing games comes from being in control of crazy speeds instead of looking at things.

They could come up with a sightseeing game (I honest have no idea what Afrika is, so maybe that's a safari game where you just look at stuff?) that might be visually interesting but not have much gameplay at all.  Some people might actually get a kick out of that...I just wouldn't call them gamers.

Shiny graphics in racing games annoy me when they bring the framerate below 60fps (like an Xbox360 car racing game demo I played that ran at 30fps because of fancy lighting, reflections, and post processing effects).

I like games with fairly simple car control, but complex tracks.  I like loops and stuff... but only with gravity, I don't like to be stuck to the track like f-zero games.

Trackmania Nations is currently my favorite racing game.  The car physics model is fairly simple... basically, you can accelerate with no top speed, but the turning radius also gets bigger. You won't fishtail/skid unless you apply your brakes or land sideways from a jump.   Its simple track editor has allowed the creation of tons of great and not-so-great tracks.  The track files are minuscule in size, so they can easily be traded.  I'd rate its lastability at at least 11.0.  Network play is simple, because lag doesn't ruin the experience.

Pod and Powerslide are my other favorite racing games (all for PC)

Nobody wants to play realistic driving games. If they did, they'd get in their car and drive. :|

When talking to the PGR3 development head, she told me that they sacrificed 60fps for 30fps because they wanted to add realistic tire treads! But to their credit they were on a tough schedule, and in focus groups people could not tell 60fps from 30fps, and seemed to prefer the extra effects.
