Component cables confirmed

480p a Go For Wii Launch (@ IGN.com)

Loving the component cables I got for my GameCube, I've kept on saying that I wanted component cables for the Wii as well, preferably as soon as possible.  (GameCube component cables aren't compatible with the Wii, but that was already determined earlier.)

Well, IGN has confirmed that they'll be available "with the launch of the console in November", but once again, through Nintendo's own online store.  Yet it'll also be available at other online retailers like EB Games, Best Buy, and Circuit City.  (I certainly hope it'll be available beforehand so I can order it with the possibility that I'll have it on Nov. 19 but at least it wouldn't be much later if I couldn't order it until then, either.)

Though I've seen stores having the supposedly-online-orderable-only Wi-Fi USB Connector dongle very soon after it was made available...

I think and hope that this situation is only for the launch period and slowly it will invade store shelves in 2007 for the added conveniance for students.

So, I expect for us Canadians to be lucky enough to have the option of buying the component cables locally from any BB or FS.

Good to hear that Nintendo won't be the sole seller of the cables this time around.  Then maybe they won't cut the feature out of Wii's later on using self-inflicted poor sales as justification.  Still I would like to see these in stores but this is an improvement at least.  Considering how the competition is going to have all sorts of HD stuff in stores merely offering component cables doesn't seem like overkill.  They don't need them at Toys 'R' Us but somewhere like Best Buy, where people can buy TVs and every connection cable around, should have them.

The problem with only selling cables online isn't specific to component cables.  Try finding first party S-Video cube cables in a store.  Nintendo is just silly about cables.

I really hope I can purchase these so that I have them before I actually have the Wii system. It would really suck to not have these at launch and have to hook up my Wii in my bedroom. Damn you Nintendo, why are you so retarded when it comes to cables?

I saw these at Best Buy, Circuit City, EB and Gamestop(behind the counter where they hold the games) in the US.

yeah i better be able to get these on the friday before launch, it'll kill me to wait, same t.v my hd is in my room and only has two things hooked into (dvdplayer/av receiver, directv hd box) so i just want it to look perrty as soon as i turn it on... if i have to wait for cables i may just wait to turn it on.

When they were released?

I'm just going to wait a few more weeks until they clear it up for us, just because IGN got the word from Nintendo does not make it official, heck Japan had their own press conference just for the accesories.

Yeah, If I can't get the component cables initially for the Wii that first wiring job is going to be a nightmare to say the least.

I think the WiFi dongle was released around the time Metroid Prime Hunters was in the US - over here, we got it in time for Mario Kart. I don't think they ever got Electroplankton in stores, though..

This online only thing is hella weak, why don't they sell them in stores? They better let you buy and ship those cables to your house before the Wii launch or I'm royally screwed. I live in Puerto Rico so it takes a little longer (and more $) to ship stuff from EB and such here, no way I want to play Zelda in blurry and washed out colors of composite cables for a week or more.

I was under the assumption that the component cables were part of the package. Its disappointing that its being sold separately. Its starting to look like my decision to forgo purchase of the system until a later time was a wise idea.  Just include it in the package and make 480p a Wii standard!  With this setup, the Wii really is just a 1.5 GC with a new peripheral as its center piece.

If only they had included component cables. That would make the system 1.7 GC, at least!

Do keep in mind that it may not have been Nintendo's decision to sell the cables online only.  It's highly possible that companies didn't want to carry the extra inventory (extra SKUs, extra risk) and declined to have the product in their B&M stores.  The fact that the cables are online only could very possibly mean that Nintendo had to almost beg these companies to do it.

You must be very unsatisfied when you upgrade your computer.
Correct me if I'm wrong but neither version of the PS3 comes with hi-def capable cords (Component/HDMI)  and I know the core 360 doesn't and I'm not sure about the true 360.  Both those systems tote and bank on their hi-def prowess.  Personally that right their makes those systems seem unpolished.

Now people who know that Nintendo is going w/ the idea that most people will still use your Standard Definition TV.  What connection is on most of those types of TV's and HDTV? RCA/Composite.  Not even S-Video is as prevalent of the SD only standards.  So Nintendo wants to cater to the largest amount of people not a niche group that they decided no to focus on this time around.  Why incur the extra cost if its:
A) Linked to something that your product decided not to focus on
B) Is required by none of the user base for a basic setup
I would love it if it did come with those cables but when the consoles that are focussing on HD don't come with the cables to do the one that doesn't surely isn't.  It's what would be considered a luxury item.  (Also as some luxury items once you try it you never want to go back.  Very prevalent in food brands.)

To sum it all up not surprised can't blame them.  Now the PS3 on the other hand is another story.  The "real" PS3 should come with the better cables at least.

Edit:  Was on my PDA in class when I wrote that and had to leave before I could finish I'm finishing it.

Okay the premium (399.99) 360 DOES include the component high def cables.  Wii, core 360, core PS3, premium PS3 includes composite standard def cables.
And aparently on PS3 you have to BUY demos which is crap.

The PS3 system will come bundled with one SIXAXIS wireless controller, an AC cord, a USB mini-cable, an ethernet cable, and composite cables. No component.
-The first 500,000 PS3 systems sold in the United States will include a Blu-Ray version of the movie "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby," almost one month before its release date.

Horrible idea.  Can you imagine how it'd feel to get home and realize you can't even use your system because you didn't buy composite cables?

My TV doesn't even support progressive scan and I'm annoyed at not having component cables available at the store.  Games just look so much better through component video.

Also, there's not much chance of them axing the feature from Wii like they did with GameCube.  On GameCube, component video used a completely separate jack, and Nintendo apparently thought it wasn't worth the cost once they hit the budget market.  Wii only has one A/V out so there's no way for them to get rid of it.
