New Rumor?? from the Guys at EBgames(Zelda)
« on: October 13, 2006, 08:01:08 PM »
My roommate was at eb on friday preordering of course.  The clerk i know for a fact went to the EBgames convention and was able to get first hand play on the Wii and PS3.  He said that Zelda has changed hands again, as in Link is a LEFTY again in the WII version.  This was found out by my roommate when another customer preordered a wii with the gamecube zelda.  The customer was stingy and did not want to preorder the zelda with link as a righty.  The clear then said that the sword controls have been moved to the nunchuck attachment, as to keep link left-handed.  This makes sense because as you can remember, the sword controls when on the wiimote were based on any movement, the movement caused near the same sword action no matter how it was swung.  The nunchuck can sense gyrational motion but not 3d space, which is not needed for the sword action in zelda.  Please take this information with a grain of salt because I was puzzled when I was told this on friday, but I do trust the source( the clerk has been working at EB since it was built 2 years ago and my source that told me he went to the convention is a highschool friend).

It would still be pretty awkward swinging the sword with the analogue attachment.. I don't think this is true.

IS there any reason there won't be an option for both?

I've heard about this "EB Convention"  A clerk was discouraging me from buying a Wii because of what he heard from his manager.  Digging past the general comment of "Wii remote is horrible" I got to "in Red Steel the sword system isn't a direct mapping and it's based of gestures" (Big difference).  Now, that sounds like an E3 build to me.  If this EB convention is real, it sounds very much to be using E3 builds of the software.

The Zelda thing further strengthen this hypothesis.

yes it does sound like it could be an E3 build but I never remeber zelda even being mentioned to be played with the nunchuck for a sword control.  At E3 is was the B button i believe.  I guess we'll just have to see in a month.  The convention was about 2 weeks ago in dallas and there is not much on the web about it.

heres a quote from http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=122023&page=3

Opposite side of the coin... Zelda was NOT intuitive. I'm not saying the controls were bad... they just have a pretty big learning curve. I was patient and it took me about 7-10 minutes to really figure out how to do things properly. The sword slashing did not feel stupid, like I thought it might. Waggling the nunchuck made Link do a spin-attack... which was really cool. It certainly took some getting used to as far as combat goes. Blocking and such feels different. Shooting at the flaming-arrow dudes was frustrating at first because it takes a second to set up your aim, but by they time I was ready to shoot they would hit me with an arrow and that knocks you out of aiming mode. I eventually figured out that if you hold down Z you can strafe around while you aim. EXTREMELY helpful. Most people got frustrated with Zelda... but they were probably drunk. Zelda looked good but very pixelated, but the one I played was on a smaller LCD screen. Bad idea. Lots of jaggies. I later went and watched somebody else play on one of the big big plasmas, and it looked fan-freaking-tastic.

One thing I noticed when playing Zelda is that with the cursor... you are NOT pointing at the screen. You have to point at the SENSOR BAR. Which is EXTREMELY ANNOYING if you are close to the TV. I couldn't figure it out at first. It wasn't a problem with Mario... it felt like I was pointing right at the TV. But with Zelda I honestly thought the calibration (if there is such a thing) was totally off. I realized that I had to back up about 2 feet. Then it was perfect. I can see the Wii being a little frustrating for people with small TVs or who play in close quarters to their sets.

This is all i could find about the convention.  Maybe its an option for righty link haters because all the wii version is is a mirrored version of the GC, so it cant be that hard to unmirror.

Bah, I hope this isnt true, I would be terribly dissapointed at Nintendo (I mean, even more!) good developers don't change major controls schemes mere weeks before release, it gives more and more the impression that this are half-assed controls.

directing to Blackplague:

Zelda is ment for hard-core gamers so of core it'll take some time to get used to.  I play VG's in close quorters in my room a lot and want to know how well the sencer bar will work when it's behind objects.

It won't. Line of sight is required.

Yeah the sensor bar just shoots out two points of infrared light that the sensor on the remote keeps track of.  If you block them, there's no way for the remote to know where it is.  However you don't have to really point at the sensor bar.   It readjusts center to wherever you're standing and the cursor moves relative to your center point.

I sincerely hope so. I seriously considered not getting Twilight Princess becuase Link is now a righty on principle. I'm left handed and I can play right handed. Yet still it erks the hell out of me. I mean if I can play the with my off hand and all lefty's I know can do so as well. Righty's just need suck it up for once!

I find games to be a little bit hand independent.  I mean the analog stick is on the left my off-hand and it requires the most precision and I do fine.

I'm sure there is an option that asks you whether you are right-handed or not. The Wiimote and attachment are friendly for both handedness, unlike every other controller in the past, so the option would actually be usefull. So I wouldn't worry about Zelda too much...
