Resistance Fall of Man
« on: September 24, 2006, 03:05:22 PM »
Since this appears to be the big launch title for PS3, it is only best to have a topic about it. My personal opinion is that I am not too impressed from what I seen, the other day I watched a video gaming show and they were mainly focusing on the game. The visuals look nice (not amazing but nice), but the game looks super generic, even the weapons give that sense of it being generic. It appears to be yet another FPS with alien creatures (yeah I know they are called chimeras but they are basically aliens) that you run around shooting, the game appears to be quite shallow from what I've seen.

I'm pretty sure this game came out in 2001, and it was called Halo.

Damn, I really don't want to have to deal with another group of idiots praising a totally craptacular game.

I played it. It is really generic. It seems to support a lot of players, though...

Yeah that was impressive, but then again it will mainly depend on how well multiplayer is designed, alot of players in a poorly designed multiplayer game is not the best thing. BTW where did you play it? Also I did get a Halo vibe while watching it in motion (not a good thing), at least the single player mode had that vibe where you mow down endless hordes of enemies.  Not to mention the fact that the lead game designer they interviewed did not inspire confidence in him, I don't know how often he was saying how "cool" the game is, and how great the guns are (all but one looked generic as heck).

Fixed.

Well, this is from Insomniac and they usually don't suck. I hear weapon design is a forte of the game, as is 40 player multiplayer, but you have to do some really special things to set yourself apart in the FPS genre and I don't know that this game will. I guess I'll find out in 3-4 years when I buy a used PS3 for $200.

It looks okay, but I have to agree on getting a Halo vibe from it.

When I get a PS3 WAY down the line I may try it unless it gets skewered by reviews. The only weapon I thought was decent was the one where an electrical bolt can go through multiple enemies at once (the rocketlauncher where you can control the rocket was decent as well).

the other day I watched a video gaming show and they were mainly focusing on the game.

yeah, gamehead is counting down to the launch of the 'system everyone can't wait to get their hands on' by focusing on something ps3-related every week. It's almost like another console isn't launching around the same time....

I played it at TGS. They set up our crew with a 5 v 5 objective based match (like Halo's territories or somesuch). Although it really doesn't remind me of Halo that much. They should have named it BATTLEFIELD VS DOOM SUPER TURBO.

I've never had a FPS feel right on a PS2 controller, though (as opposed to XBOX or N64)... I had a lot of trouble aiming.

I had forgotten what games Insomniac has done, and now that I have researched them a bit, I'm not sure I am confident in their ability to make a FPS. Yeah the R&C series along with Spyro were good, solid games, they were platformers (ratchet was more action oriented but still a platformer).  So honestly I don't see them creating the game as a ringing endorsement when they haven't even dabbled in the FPS genre.

Ouch. I really hope in 3-4 years the PS3 is cheaper than that (smaller too). It's just painful thinking about how damn expensive this console is and how you aren't really getting any bang for your buck.

Either Kutaragi or Hirai said at E3 that the PS3 will not drop price within 5 years from launch, until they start having a profit from producing the PS3 don't expect a price drop.

I know that these people actually say these things, but whenever I hear something stupid from Sony I can't help wondering if they actually said that. No price drop until then would be suicide in the worst of fashions..

Alright, forget who's making the game. What about the awesome controller shaking feature to shake off aliens that grab onto you? Eh? That do anything for ya?

Anyways, what you said was true. Usually developers first efforts in the FPS genre are not their best. Wolfenstein 3D had to come before Doom which had to come before Quake. Half-Life had to come before Half-Life 2. GoldenEye had to come before TimeSplitters 3. Perfect Dark had to come before, er, wait, that's not a good example. You get the point.

Shaking a controller to get aliens off you definately is innovative to the extreme, I take everything bad I said about this game which I once thought was a lame attempt at a Halo clone and generic as heck :-P.

I think the difference between HL1 and 2 is immeasurable, both are equally uninteresting.
