Why would Nintendo or any other developer want to begin hyping games over a year away?  If you are releasing games prior to those games you worry about it stealing the hype and them skipping out on the earlier offereing and if you are not you need to worry about awesome launch games like Zelda stealing all of your hype.  Release info after the launch hype is a good idea.

Ok Kairon, I gotchya. I DID missunderstand you a little.

As far as 2007's holiday season and beyond, there are obviouslly a number of candidates in the list IceCold posted and I'b bet there's more that are unannounced . I remember leading up to and right after E3 how a ton of developers started talking about Wii more and stating their support and so on. That does lead me to think that the time frame your concerned about should end up just fine.

Then again, I'm well aware that we just don't know yet. It's a valid concern.

Nintendo's does seem to be throwing out the big guns earlier in the year (again, granted we don't know what they might have planned) so I would expect the first party showing for holiday season 2007 to be tame. Third party suppost a year in should be pretty great though.

Predictions are mostly useless but based on what we do know, I would predict a pretty solid showing. We probobly won't really have a good idea though untill the next E3.

(btw, I really hope Sadness ends up being as cool as it sounds.)

I'll agree with Ian if Nintendo tries to rely on its VC games is bad.  Especially in Japan where people tend not to go back and buy a game that they passed up on.  Anyone that has seen Japanese game sales know that a games sales tend to never last more than a few weeks.  However the DS has totally debunked this consumer tradition so who knows.

I for one don't see any big dry spells coming anytime soon.  I wonder when Nintendo will announce some Pikmin action.....the first thing i will do is launch a pikmin into space, im evil lol!

The Virtual Console will never make up for droughts because those games aren't new.

Nobody, including deviants here in these forums, played every game that will be available on the VC.  That makes the games new to them.

I meant long term, as in Holiday 2007 and beyond. I'll be the first to admit that Nintendo is looking very healthy in the year 2007. It's about a Holiday 2007 drought that I'm wondering about.

They CAN'T ANNOUNCE those games yet, jesus christ.

This is a stupid thread, we barely know anything about what games will be out for any console in 08 because its still 2006!!

And the PS3 line-up seems kinda small even when you add the western 3rd party games we all get: Japanese PS3 game list

I would absolutely love a Pikmin game with the Wii controller, but sadly Miyamoto said that they have no plans for one currently. Makes sense, since EAD has their hands full already. Hopefully we get one iteration during this geneartion..

Who'd announce a release date that's more than a year away? At that point you've barely started development and don't know when you'll be done with the game.

"MS and Sony just insist upon choking dates out of developers because it makes it look like their consoles will have more games."

Wait, isn't that good marketing? Why isn't Nintendo doing that?

Because it's the same as claiming your console can render Toy Story in realtime. Nothing but baloney sammiches. Never mind that TBA means "could come out soon" whereas "comes out in 2008" means "comes out in 2008".

WalkingTheCow, I'm a die-hard Nintendo fanboi who'd never give serious thought to buying an XBox360 or PS3 system. But I'm also a die-hard Nintendo fanboi who wants to try as hard as possible to be impartial and to be able to see things from multiple viewpoints.

You can't be impartial if you aren't unbiased in your buying decisions.

Any true Nintendo fan would buy several PS3s in Japan, where the price is now some $410 dorrar, meaning you'd send Sony into the red even more quickly than if you just stabbed a few of their employees in the eye.

The Idea on that KDR is that it hurts both Sony and MS bottom line whenever anyone buys one of their systems then never buys anything with them that they get licensing money from.  Since they sell the console at a lost.

Of course larger sales numbers gives them more bargaining power with publishers unless the hardware-software discrepancy is as huge as it is with the PSP.

thats where i will argue that due to its high price of the system i doubt the majority of PS3 early adopters will buy more than 1 $60 game at launch.

Reason 1: They'll be broke already.
Reason 2: The launch lineup sucks.

Not including the HDMI cable further hurts Sony as Third parties could see customers buying the cable instead of an extra game or two.  Forget the Wii Sports pack in hurting game sales for Nintendo, I think Sony will have it worse.

Actually I'd argue he opposite, if you're buying a 600€ system you'll want to have more than one game to play on the thing, if not immediately then a few weeks later.

sorry i was looking at it from the publishers view point.  If they know that a consumer has to pay $600 and of course get 1 game, what is the chance that one game would be theirs?  And if a consumer had enough money to buy more than that the publisher might see a consumer buying an HDMI cable, further hurting their chance of having one of their games sold.

Personally if I was a Publisher head I would rather release my games on 360 and Wii, untill PS3's install base gets bigger and software sales are at a good steady amount.

Actually if I was a publisher I be doing some mad market research to find that one game that would do great on the PS3 Early Adopter Demographic.  Then I make that 1 game and polish it till I think it is guaranteed to be the game that all others in that particular niche will be judged by.  That way I will secure those Early adopters and later adopters by word of mouth.  Beyond that I feel my way through.  I would not just willy-nilly develop and launch games for the PS3 that I don't definitely know will do well.

We are seeing the opposite with the Wii which is the right thing to do in my opinion as well.  It's overall low developer and consumer cost coupled with the new control style and the consumer not as set in their ways because of it; makes it the perfect platform to experiment and diversify on.

The 360 as of now is a "happy" middle ground and the definitive place for the online at the moment.

A drought late next year is certainly possible, complete Wii failure is possible too...if you consider it a real concern, then don't buy the system until some more games are announced.

If I had the willpower to wait, I'd buy a Wii after the first price drop.  By then I'll have a much better idea of how good software support for the system is, plus I could save some money.  But the system looks like too much fun to wait for, and there are easily enough good games at launch to justify a purchase.

All that being said, EA and Ubisoft have already proven to be quite dedicated to Wii, and word from Nintendo is that third party interest is higher than GameCube so far.  I think 2007 is going to be a fine year for Wii.
That's my opinion, not yours.
