Are there no Wii games on the horizon? Holiday 2007 or beyond?
« on: September 22, 2006, 10:44:36 AM »
One of the things that makes it easy to buy a PS3 or XBox 360 is the implicit assurance of games in the pipeline. But what Wii games do we have in the pipeline?

Heroes sometime in 2007, Brawl in Holiday 2007...

I think there's also going to be Spore, NFS: the Island and Sims: Island from EA...

Can anyone name some first or third party titles (even non-exclusive) that we expect to see in the Holidays of 2007 or in the immediate period following that?

I.E. Could the Wii have a "year-later" drought?

There are tons of Wii games in development.

MS and Sony just insist upon choking dates out of developers because it makes it look like their consoles will have more games.

90% of those dates will slip. Count on it.

You're worried about Wii games that won't be out for another year?  Good grief, wait for E3 for those titles... =\

Mario will be moved to March or August, Metroid to November and Smash to December, VC will take care of the post-christmas/summer droughts from now on.

Isn't that what all good hardcore gamers and fanboi's do?

Let's face it, as an educated consumer, the implicit assurance that the PS3 and X360 have games down the line that will be real big is a definite plus. As a consumer of the Wii at launch, don't I have a write to inquire as to the announced future hits for my console?

Or do you expect a lot of Wii games to come out of the woodworks next March?

Actually I think he's referring to E3.  It's going to happen next summer.

E3's still happening.

I just won't be able to go next year.

If many third-party developers really didn't jump onto the Wii bandwagon until after this year's E3, perhaps they will have a lot to show by next year.

"MS and Sony just insist upon choking dates out of developers because it makes it look like their consoles will have more games."

Wait, isn't that good marketing?  Why isn't Nintendo doing that?

"VC will take care of the post-christmas/summer droughts from now on."

The Virtual Console will never make up for droughts because those games aren't new.  To suggest that someone make do with that is like telling people to play older Wii games they haven't played yet to make up for a lack of new releases.  It's all about new releases.  The Cube's got nothing right now.  Do existing Cube games I haven't played yet fill in the gap?  No.  The VC is merely a bonus and Nintendo should not rely on it to fill gaps.

I think he meant both new and old games on the VC.

That's funny I could have swore I heard the exact same thing about Nintendo DS's games, and we all know how that turned out. Seriously let's just hold our horses here and wait a bit for that stuff. I mean what does PS3 have for the future that is exclusive? Um MGS, Final Fantasy and Lair?

Man slow news day.  Gotta complain about something I guess.  Nintendo has announced 3 AAA titles for next year.  What other company has 3 AAA titles waiting in the wings next year?

While that would be some good marketing it would lead to problems.  How often do you hear people here bitching about how we were promised ssbb at launch, that zelda is on the wii first, and that metroid prime 3 is delayed?  Every single day.  I personally don't want to hear a constant stream of "Waaah waaahh!  They promised it would be here by now."  all the time.

I'm actually going to have to agree with Ian 100% on this one. There better be some new games on the horizon once the whole launch window passes and the major franchises are released. VC games in no form will be acceptable as substitutes for major game releases.

I don't know, I heard an awful lot about Geometry Wars on Xbox Live Arcade - and I'm not even truly familiar with Xbox Live.

And I'm guessing some old VC games are deeper than Geometry Wars, and there could be similar new VC games.

Feel free to prove me wrong, I'm just spouting crap on stuff I don't know about.

Ok. I accept.

Games in the pipeline:

FROM NINTENDO (includes 2nd party developers):

Super Mario Galaxy
Metroid Prime 3
Disaster: Day of Crisis
Fire Emblem
Battalion Wars 2
Forever Blue
Pokemon Battle Revolution
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Project Hammer
That Kirby game (you know it's gotta be a Wii game by now. . .)
Big Brain Academy (possiblly 2006. . .)
Super Paper Mario (possiblly 2006. . .)
DK Bongo Blast (possiblly 2006. . .)
Animal Crossing is inevitable
F-Zero is inevitable
Hell, at this point, with all the rumors and renewed interest a Kid Icarus sequel is pretty inevitable too.

EDIT: and as VGrevolution points out, Mario Strikers

I'd list 3rd party games too but that sounds too time consuming . . . I hope I've given you the impression that I think you're raving mad with this whole "Oh noes! No game in 2007!" thing. . . Because I think you are. The release list for 2007 is looking fantastic as far as I'm concerned. Much, much better than Gamecube's first year. We have something to be happy about here.

Ya crazy.

I meant long term, as in Holiday 2007 and beyond. I'll be the first to admit that Nintendo is looking very healthy in the year 2007. It's about a Holiday 2007 drought that I'm wondering about.

Your list revised to remove anticipated early and summer 2007 releases and to remove games speculated only because they are franchises(i.e. no proof of development):

And I would appreciate a list of third party titles, lol. Maybe we'll get Capcom's RE wiimake compilation (as in, NOT A NEW GAME) in late 2007 also?

WalkingTheCow, I'm a die-hard Nintendo fanboi who'd never give serious thought to buying an XBox360 or PS3 system.  But I'm also a die-hard Nintendo fanboi who wants to try as hard as possible to be impartial and to be able to see things from multiple viewpoints.

For example, we can see tons of stuff right now, but are there any down-the-line long-term releases for the Wii we can get excited about?

Just a question. *shrug*

Have there been any games announced for Xbox 360 or PS3 for beyond 2007? Usually it seems announced games tend to cover up to a year. BTW one 3rd party game I know I am highly anticipating is sadness, that game has lots of potential.

Hmm... yeah, with about 2 years of dev time, it may be a little strange to expect to know games coming out a year or more ahead of time, but that just seems to me the sense that PS3 owners get, that if they only invested time and energy they'd have a list of such games.

Thanks for reminding me about Sadness though! OH, and whatever Wii project N-Space is cooking up, hopefully with enough zeal and drive to make a quality AAA title.

Or will Holiday 2007 be when we see the fruition of tons of anounced but as-of-yet untitled or un-detailed projects from third parties? Wii game lists seem to contain a large number of "Untitled Project"s when it comes to third parties...

Also don't forget that Nintendo isn't known for spilling the beans too far ahead of time lol. Personally I think the reason for the 3rd parties having untitiled one for Wii is that they are waiting and seeing how Wii does along with whether or not Wii owners buy games. It will probaly be alot like DS in that it took a year or so of success to get 3rd parties on board.
