Midnight lineups

OK
So this is the first time I have even considered buying a new video game console at launch, and I'm a bit confused about the whole "midnight launch" deal. Do major outlets open up at 12:00am on the day of launch, or something to that effect? Or is it merely a long lineup outside the store from midnight until the store opens its doors at the usual 9 or 10am schedule?

In other words, do I lineup the evening of Saturday the 18th, or in the wee (no godawful pun intended) hours of Sunday the 19th?

It depends on the store.  Most will announce it well in advance (at least a week or two).  For the GameCube I know some stores opened at midnight and some opened at 9 am.  I wish I could tell you about the 360 launch but I didn't follow it that closely.  I do know some stores had midnight launches, but I'm going to assume that some did not.

Go to a 24hour Walmart and get their early.  When i got my cube i went early in the morning and they handed out a ticket and said come back at 9am.  Of course i was like #13 and was there at like 6 or 7am.

I'm curious, I've never done a Midnight launch, when is a good time to go and wait in line?  I don't need to be the first G@d D@mn person in line but the thought has crossed my mind.  I'd like to be atleast the 20th person.

If it's Turok, you have to start camping out 2 months prior to release and doa  PR deal with Acclaim. In a few weeks you are free to LEAVE THE STORE AND NEVER RETURN.

Whatever moron named his kid Turok is looking at lawsuits from his own child in the future.  Actually i don't think naming your child something gawd awful is illegal but for this particular case it should be.

I did a midnight launch at Walmart for the Gamecube...I believe I was there with a friend around 11 PM, and the line was pretty long for a such a hick city as Columbia, South Carolina (we were probably at dozen people down the line)...I expect the Wii's line to be even longer...

If I can get motivated enough to pre-order a Wii and get some mates together I'm certain we could gatecrash a midnight launch. Pound a few drinks before, proclaim that we are God's gift to women and nunchuck-shaped controllers, and heckle people in the street BECAUSE OF BIG DAMN TRUCKS. Practise sword slashing with a TV remote while lining up complete with Link grunts and shouts. Play Wii Tennis without owning the game or the system, and then ending up in fisticuffs with some random guy because that ball was clearly long. It would be an epic night.

Stay tuned.

I am planning on just hiiting Walmart, or whatever store I hear is doing a Midnight selling of the system right at Midnight.  That way, I don't have to wait in line, but I am sure to get one day one.

It is odd, because for the PS2 several stores reopened at 12am to sell to the masses...but then for Xbox and Gamecube it became much less.  Xbox 360 didn't have any midnight stores open here.

10pm.  If I'm not getting a pre-order.  If that isn't early enough I can always go to my Sears and bug them the next day at 9:30.  Why?  Because no one ever remember Sears sales Videogames.  Including Sears.

I camped out for my DS and my Gamecube at Walmart for the Midnite release. For the Cube I got there with my friend ay 7 PM and we were #2 and #3 in line. For the DS I got there at 11:30 and ... I was the only one there. I expect with the Wii I will get there at 7PM or 8PM and start waiting in line. Same for the PS3. Buy 2 and make some serious $$$.

You just have to bug them to check their back stock because they probably won't have them out if they do have them.  Though considering the amount that are suppose to be out then it should be no problem.  (My small store had the DS)

Most Wal-Marts will be 24 hours at that point due to the holiday season.  For GameCube I got in line around 7pm and was number 13.  That wal-mart ended up getting 72 GameCubes and the people that got there at 11:30 got one.  I felt kind of silly.

Anyone know if Microcenter would be likely to have the Wii in stock on launch day?  They don't seem like the type of place that hypes their videogame section, and I don't think they'd be doing a midnight event. Luckily, I live in a fairly blue-collar and immigrant heavy section of northern VA, so I doubt there will be hordes of middle class dweebs like myself waiting to pick it up at launch...

I will avoid the Gamestops/EB games in Arlington and DC like the plague. Those are sure to sell out immediately, and i'm not about to contend with any lines just to realize that they've sold out.

I'm planning on going somewhere between 6-12 hours early at my wal-mart.  I live on a college campus (40k students, go Boilermakers...) with two wal-marts within spitting distance.  I absolutely will not be able to deal with not having a system on launch.

When the GameCube launched, I didn't need to deal with the launch-day crowds or lines.  I just hid one at the store I worked at and took it home that day.

I want to see how waiting in line is for a console launch.  I've never done it before.

I've never lined up at midnight either.  I got my GameCube and DS on the first day but those were morning (as in, actually morning and not midnight) line-ups that weren't too long.

Perhaps it would be neat to, but I don't know if stores in Edmonton find it necessary...

i think im now gonna line up at 6 or 7pm.  I've never done something like that so it'll be an experience.  I think the longest time i've waited in line was for Twilight Princess, and this is gonna stomp it.  Some one should bring a guitar and we can all sing "Why can't Wii be friends" or "Wii Will Rocky you" etc, it would be hilarious.  I'll be looking for a youtubevideo of that at launch, lol.

Does anyone know the launch numbers of the Gamecube one launch day?  I am trying to compare numbers and see if we are stressed about day one sell out for nothing.

I don't remember having the even sweat DS day one purchase, or DS Lite...or Gamecube.  But I don't know the launch numbers.  I just have a feeling if we get 1.5-2 million units at launch that we won't be sold out on day one.

700,000, I think...And assuming 4 million Wiisare shipped worldwide, and that the U.S. gets 2 million...........

But, of course, this is a whole new breed of console, so we have no clue how the general public will react...

Bill:  It will take time for the general public to get word, try it and buy it.

Wii is going to sell big with the gamers in the know, but it will be a slow burn to popularity among the nongamers and general public.  Or that is what I believe.

I don't think we will have any problems buying a Wii at launch.  I am not worried at all.  That is why I am holding off preordering.  I want to play my Wii on November 18 (technically 19 at 12:00am) with my friends on my birthday.  If I preorder at the wrong place I am screwed.  Plus you sometimes miss out on cool promotional deals when you preorder at like Gamestop then see Best Buy will be selling a half priced controller with purchase of a Wii or something like that.

I lined up for GameCube back in "01" I got there about 11:00(got game? south street, Philly) and I was 3rd. I told the two guys I was going to the store and that I would be back at 11:40. when I got back there was 50 people in line, but since we all had pre orders it didn't make a difference. Went home and played StarWars: RS2 for about 6hours. Good times.

Are they going to do something like the "Cube Club" for Wii?
