Wii Pre-Orders & Bundles
« on: September 15, 2006, 06:03:38 AM »
Thought I would start up this thread, and people can add to it as they find pre-orders online and off.

Amazon.com has begun Wii pre-orders without bundles, but only a couple of the launch games are activated so far.

Link: Amazon.com Wii pre-order

Edit: Looks like Amazon Wii preorders have stopped for now. Sellout Get?

That's weird.  Amazon was supposed to send me an alert when they began accepting orders.  Maybe that wasn't intentional.

Gamestop says they'll know if they're taking preorders or not on monday....hopefully that means they start preorders on monday :P

I went through loops with GCN at Amazon, seconds after allowing them, when I tried to finalize my order I get a message saying that preorders have stopped.  I wound up going through EBgames.com.  I will wait for Gamestop.com to offer, because Amazon.com only plays games to see how many people are interested.

Well EBgames/Gamestop has updated their Wii page.  They added the line "check back soon for news on our exciting preorder bundles."

I can deal with a bundle on Wii because it's sure to have Zelda in it, and other good games too.

Kind of interesting that nobody is doing a pre-order for the system yet. I see games all over the place, and you think they all know the release date and price........if in fact that is the real price and release date..dun, dun, dun!!!!

Gamestop/EBGames doesn't want to get burned again like they were with Xbox 360 so they are holding out for more information.  I find it odd that their PS3 page hasn't been changed regardless of the fact that we know how much the system is going to cost for both versions, and launch numbers and launch date, yet like the same day the price and launch date for the Wii is revealed they update the page!

i truly think retailers online or off, are going to really push the 360 and Wii.  No retailer in the world would want to push a system that they can only sell a handful of due to shipments.

Anyone that has been in the retail industry knows that retailers make very little money on systems and games, so a smart retailer is going to push whichever system they have more systems and accessories for (accessories they get more profit from.)

Assuming their financial situation permits it, I would assume Sony would be paying off retailers to feature their products. Either directly, or through deals on other Sony products. You're right, there's no money in putting the PS3 in your ad when in all likelihood your store is getting 2 or 3 at the most. But if Sony wants the ads, there are ways.

Well like I said in a previous thread the local branch manager at Gamestop told me they may not even have preorders for the brick and mortar stores for either PS3 or Wii. They are considering a lottery system which is one of the stupidest ideas ever!

But not Best Buy... didn't they force bundles on customers in their B&M stores? (even though the customer was not required to buy the bundle, but BB neglected to inform the customer of this fact?)  Then had to apologize and give refunds/rebates/credit or something like that after the XBox 360 came out?

I work at EB and we're not taking pre-orders til we know how many systems Nintendo is gonna send to our store.  You can pre-order all the launch games as of right now.  Zelda, Excite Truck, etc.  Also apparently EB is not allowed to do bundles in store anymore, so you don't have to worry about that.  Only online can...

Do you have an estimate as to when you should know how many Wiis you are getting?

Possible Gamestop EB Games Wii reserve details

According to Go Nintendo ...
Quote

GameStop will start accepting pre-orders for the PS3/Wii on MONDAY SEPTEMBER 18. This will last for ONE WEEK only. Any store can and will stop taking pre-orders at any time (most likely when their limit is reached).

GameStop is NOT ACCEPTING cash, or store credit for your down payment on a pre-order. You HAVE to trade in games or accessories when you pre-order. It must total $50 or more, and it will all go towards your system pre-order.
What do you guys think?  Bogus?  I find it really hard to believe that this is true.  Go Nintendo has an image of a poster that advertised trading in your old stuff to reserve a Wii/PS3.  I'm sure someone just misinterpreted this and thought it was the only way to reserve one.

I'll guess we'll find out come Monday.

I would not be too surprised.  I just sort of want to know how they are going to spin this to avoid getting in trouble with the law.
Extra promotional stuff is ok with the trade in things but, forcing a consumer to use non-currency items to obtain something from a store is illegal.  All stores at their physical locations must take cash to buy goods and services.  Its a law.  I'm fairly sure its Federal.
That being said it means it sort almost has to be bogus.  (Or me and the BBB can figure it out.)

You have to pay with store credit? That's the most retarded thing I've ever heard. So it's either the most retarded decision ever, or the most retarded rumor ever.

Actually, according to the report you can't even pay with existing store credit--it has to be new store credit.

I'm still calling bogus.  It just doesn't seem like something they'd have the balls to do.

I'm not sure that argument would work.  You could still buy the Wii/PS3 for cash, you just couldn't reserve one.
