Press Perception
« on: September 14, 2006, 08:06:06 PM »
You know, even though to some of us the last two days have been a disaster, the media is still lapping up the Wii - especially the mainstream press. The "analysts" are backing Nintendo as well, considering it to be a strong competitor in the coming generation.

Here is an article for the LA Times which puts the Wii in a very good light. For those who haven't been following the console closely, a $250 price point with that brilliant controller sounds very enticing when compared to the PS3 and X360. This is another great article on the same subject.

It's nice to see that the Wii is being taken as a serious contender, and hopefully the good press will continue until and after its launch.

That's because although the press is dumb as s***, they are not very likely to indulge in immature fanboi illusions of grandeur.

ha, that game industry article is cool. The enthusiast press likie Nintendo because, being geeks, they appreciate the underdog, and also because they gre up with them? Makes sense.

Oh, as for the press reaction - I am happy, yes. Tho a little dissapointed that Wii isn't the top tech story at either CNN or BBC.

In this vein of news reaction, I was also listening to the local talk show (Woody, Tony, and Ravey) on the radio during my commute. A lot of the time they have a video game segment near the end of the show, and today was no exception.

During the program, someone phoned in with the details on the Wii launch (price and date) and later someone phoned in asking what that price was, and was then very estatic on the phone when they told him "$250 with Wii Sports". Unfortunately, those were the only two times the system was mentioned during the whole segment. :-S

I'm still floored at the amount of hype the PS3 is generating too, which seems to come mostly from casuals (considering the interest in Madden during most of these segments, I'd say this is a prime example of that market). Like someone else said, it's probably going to take them actually walking into the store and seeing the $600 price first hand before they finally go: "whoa... is it really worth that much to me?"

Here's a lovely quote:
Quote

Fans criticised a lack of innovation. The controller was almost exactly the same as the one that came with the original PlayStation and PS2.

It also relies heavily on recycled hits. The games set to be released with the machine bear tell-tale “more of the same” titles such as Everybody’s Golf 5, Virtual Fighter 5 and Ridge Racer 7.

As a result, industry observers have tipped Nintendo as the likely victor in the console war.

Its new machine, the Wii, features a revolutionary motion-sensitive controller. It will cost 25,000 yen in Japan and £179 in Britain.

The new sword-fighting game Bleach, where players swish the controller around the room and their actions are mimicked by armour-clad knights on the screen, may convert newcomers to Wii.

Ha!

No kidding! I was too confused over why Bleach was used as the example in the first place to even notice but yeah. . . armor clad knights! Fantastic!

Interesting to see a mainstream article talk about the Wii as a "likely victor".

You know, I have to say that before E3, before these predictions, and maybe even before the controller, wandering was the first of us to predict Nintendo taking this generation. Makes him look brilliant at the moment..

...or else makes me look like a blind Nintendo fanboy. I argued in favor of the cube's purple color back in the day - so probably best not to label me brilliant.

Though I'm not really remembering this supposed trail-blazing prediction of mine. Too bad I don't save all my posts anymore...

Nintendo is teh kiddie in a good way this time

Quote

Toy retailer Toys "R" Us has unveiled its "hot toy" list for the upcoming holiday season, and this year, it includes a video game console for the first time--Nintendo's Wii.
Also, interest in the Wii in Japan (according to Amazon) is at an all-time high, and has pushed far ahead of the PS3.
Quote

In the latest registration data, Wii received a significant leap in interest over the 60GB PS3 SKU. Previous week-to-week data indicated similar interest for both new machines
If you remember, Famitsu had a poll which said that the opinion was heavily in favour of the Wii, but Amazon said that it was about the same, from what they had found. Now I guess they both agree..

I remember that a while ago there was a poll in Japan, around the time that the DS was really picking up steam, which showed that the PSP was still ahead in the opinion polls. The result may have been skewed, but it could be that even though the marketing and brand caused the consumer interest to be higher, the DS still sold more. This shows that the price of the PSP was just too much to be worth an investment for many people. The same has a good chance of happening with the PS3 - especially with the outrageous price.

abc news interviews Reggie.

I don't see the big news stations sitting down with the sony and ms presidents.  The new controller and marketing Nintendo is putting on the Wii seems to be capturing everyone's attention if not their imagination.

Now that's awesome, great to see this coverage start to seep into the mainstream now. Most companies would kill for what Nintendo got to do there too, which was more or less a video advertorial (editoral which acts like an ad).

That was weird. It was almost a paid advertisement. I almost expected Reggie to punch down a book case and demand that his interviewer stop lobbing him softballs.

I really believe Nintendo can get the non-gamer. Even that baldy guy seemed interested in playing. Of course it was just for the interview, but I bet he to will one day own a Wii.

Maybe they showed part on TV and the rest online, I think that's popular nowdays.

Edit: watched the interview, not bad.  Reggie is better when he's giving a speech to an audience.  In a one-on-one he's kind of menacing and creepy looking, but on stage he's like, "RAWR", in a good way.  The guy did make it awful easy for the most part, didn't he?

The notebook is magical and, much like Santa's list, has names that automagically appears of the people who needs a Reggie fine tuning.  It would take to much time for him to write them all down manually.
