Some developers not supporting 16:9 or Progressive?
« on: August 18, 2006, 06:20:05 PM »

Matt has written an interesting editorial about how some developers are not going to support 16:9 or Progressive in their games. I hope NIntendo starts to push these developers to change their mind, because like Matt says (using other developers as sources), it is not that hard to implement them. Since Wii does not have HD and can't compete on the same level with PS3 or Xbox 360 when it comes to clarity, I think this is a MUST to require developers to include 16:9 or Progressive. Anywya if you get the chance check out the editorial, I especially liked this section:

I don't think anybody - not even the most die-hard Nintendo fanboy - will still dispute the fact that Wii lacks the horsepower of competing consoles Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, whose graphics offer greater clarity in high-definition. But that doesn't mean that software houses needn't bother implementing any extra graphical bells and whistles for their Wii games. After all, the system is more capable than GameCube and Xbox, which were home to visual stunners like Resident Evil 4 and Black. Clearly there is substantial room for some graphical showpieces.

Some come on your lazy developers, take advantage of Wii and don't fall into the rut of "It isn't as powerful as Xbox 360 or PS3, so we have an excuse to be lazy"

Isn't the difference between 480i and 480p doubling the framerate? That seems like something a developer would reasonably not want to do. Then again, several posters on this board have commented that they perfer higher framerate to better graphics.

16:9... maybe it just does not work for some games. Or the extra side-to-side sight significantly changes the difficulty.

No, going from 480i to 480p is like gaining the clarity of a VGA monitor, where you can clearly see that pixels are straight-edged boxes with practically no color bleeding or blurring (CRTs for the win).  And since complete frames are being drawn, you get to see ALL the motion from games which operate at a solid 60fps -- no scanlines or ghosting effects.

Higher framerates *are* "better graphics" and are better for gameplay, and it's more lifelike.

Games have been running at 60fps since the NES.  In this age of "new" hardware, taking a step back should not be encouraged.

Nintendo said all games will support 480p, so I expect some kind of attention (punishment) given by Nintendo to these lazy 3rd parties.

About the widescreen, I don't really care, although I do have a widescreen TV but when I play games in 4:3 they still look mighty fine, so no problem there at least for me.

I remember that to. That being said Nintendo tended to support 480p w/ the GCN on their games.  I think Nintendo will try to put their foot down on this.  Maybe not this 1st gen though after I'm sure they will.  It's in everyones best interest.

And at the very least, you can bet that we'll be making note of your carelessness every time we preview or review your product.

Best part of the whole article.  He's pretty much telling them straight that their game will get a lower score if it doesn't implement these features.  Considering his view that developers are being lazy and just trying to get something out if they don't I can beleive that whether he wants to or not he's going to dock them for that.  I have to agree.  The end work and the little things are really the only indication we have on how much a developer cares for a game or franchise.

Nice touch, he sorta put developers on notice.

And really if they're going to commit to widescreen HD for the other platforms but can't even crap out 480p for a Wii game, they ARE lazy-ass fvcks. There is no excuse. They barely had one for GameCube, but they certainly have none for Wii.
"wow."
