Wow.  You're smart.  You know, being a blind as bat loyalist to Nintendo means at some point you'll seem like you were ahead of the curve.  Shall we troll through all of your posts for ridiculous comments on everything Nintendo related to mix and match where you were horribly incorrect?  Because I can assure you there are many examples.  Bottom line?  Who cares that people reacted as they did?

By the way, I still loathe the name.  But I also said immediately after the name change that I was still going to buy it on launch day.  I could see into the future!  Yay!

Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed. Unlike some fanboys I thought Mario and others made some pretty compelling arguments why the name was a good choice (along with some solid ones on the other side), a blind fanboy is someone who can't defend their opinion worth crap, and I do not believe Mario nor any of the others would fall into that category. Nintendo has been doing about everything right this time around, and the media is starting to come around which speaks volumes as to how they are handling the Wii.

It sure won't.

Hey guys have you heard the name for Nintendo's new console, haha Wii. Sounds very Tonka truck-ish and homosexual, I can't look cool playing something called a Wii. Nintendo's doomed forever. Pack up and shut up shop guys! Worst decision ever! Who even cares about the games, the machine's called Wii for crying out loud. I'll never get over this because I'm the type of 'gamer' that posts non-game images of games like Metal Gear to prove my point that Wii is a childish game meant for unborn children. I'm hardcore. Too hardcore for a Wii. I've got a joke, hang on, get ready, here it is.

"Man I have to Wii"

LOL did you get it. Did you get the joke. I made it up by myself. I made it up because it sounds like wee, that's the hidden part to the joke. You have to be smart like me to create such crafty humour based on names of video game consoles. I was also the one that discovered you can turn Mario Kart into Mario FART. LOL. Another one. This is why Nintendo's lost the plot.

Actually I should had put conditions.  First names are normally not words.  THey were at one point derived from words but they have deviated such that they no longer represent the word.  Last name here in the States... Yeah... that mostly because of the butchering that happened when people immigrated.  You are a Smith so your last name will be Smith.  Or in my case last name Shook probably came from Schuch.  Funny thing is over time it got bettter and people's names were butchered less so know there is no set spelling for certian names.  Mine gets messed up all the time.  I'm like it's the past tense of Shake its not that hard.

The counter images when they become available:

If anyone has other suggestions lets here them.  That person really was clever don't you think?  Probably the top in his age group and matured level in Keyboarding.  Look at that he didn't misspell or have horrible Grammar.  His Mother must be proud!  I think I'll call him George the Lost Fanboy.

The more I think about it, the more I think that a lot of Nintendo's success with the name comes from the fact that all of the "ridicule fuel" went instead to the PS3.

If Sony had announced the PS3 and announced that it would be launching at $299, I don't think the fanboy backlash from Sony fans would exist and the Wii would have been ridiculed a great deal longer.

After the Sony E3 conference, though, any ridicule which would have been on Nintendo went straight to Sony and stayed there.

Also, to be fair, the console hasn't gone to market yet, and while I think it'll sell like crazy, it might not be the case.

Mario may be a blind as a bat loyalist, but that doesn't mean he can't see what Nintendo decisions are and aren't good. With sonar.

Anyway. The fact that the Wii name is stupid has always been irrelevant. Weird names stop being weird after frequent use. Which just leaves us with the name's advantages. Let's go over them again, for old times's sake. The name:

1. Is very easy to remember.
2. Sets is self apart from other consoles (console names like 'UberboxStation 5' tend to run together in the minds of people who don't play games)
3. Can't be abbreviated (some people have a hard time learning console names, let alone their code words.)
4. Can be the same in all regions of the world.
5. Looks really cool visually.

People keep making a point to show the differences between the name 'iPod' and the name 'Wii', but I think the only real difference between the two is that one is new and the other isn't. Both are incredibly stupid-sounding names which were chosen for very carefully considered marketing purposes.

...In fact, I'd be willing to bet that, in the future, when some other big company decides to use an even weirder name for one of their products, people will leap on it by saying "that name is nothing at all like successful product names 'iPod' and 'Wii'!"

It might have been "Will the Wii be able to beat the PS3?" until Sony made fools of their entire empire. Now, it's basically "Will Nintendo be able to dominate in the US the way they're going to dominate in Japan?"

Hey wouldn't that same logic be for about any other system. I would think an excellent lineup and a reasonable price tag would garner support from other systems as well. LIke well, um, Nintendo with Wii .

Never said it wouldn't.

But I do feel that the anti-Nintendo sentiment which is usually held by the general gaming media was reduced by the amount of bad press Sony was generating for itself.

If people are going to attack the Wii, they'd need a strong platform do it from, otherwise there's no comparison. Sony isn't providing that platform and neither is MS, really.

You'd probably still be hearing more of the anti-Wii sentiment if Sony's fans hadn't basically been forced into defensive mode.

After all, a silly name is nothing compared to a $600 pricetag and sh*ttacular launch lineup. Sony fans don't have a leg to stand on right now, and that includes the pro-Sony media.

Don't get me wrong, I know Nintendo's stellar E3 helped them a great deal, but the typical anti-Nintendo sentiment is also being quelled by the fact that there isn't any real competition to attack them.

I kind of agree, Smash_Brother.  Nintendo often comes out of E3 smelling like a rose, but this time there isn't even any way for Sony fans to argue against it.  I mean, they'll try anyway, but Sony's showing was horrific.  They should have just rolled out the Final Fantasy and MGS footage and said, "More details to come!"

However, I don't think Sony's poor showing derailed the Wii naming thing.  It helped make Nintendo (and MS) look better, but  I think playing the system would have made people shut up about the name anyway.  You don't go to E3 thinking, "Oh I can't wait to make fun of this new system's crappy name!"  You go thinking, "I can't wait to play this new system's games!"  The gaming media came, it saw, it had fun.  Even if some of the impressions came back kind of so-so, the buzz on the show floor must have been pretty big considering that the lineups for Nintendo's booth were record-breaking and got longer each day.

Edit: Oops, derailed myself!  My point being that once people played the games, any remaining doubts about the name became totally insignificant.  Nintendo releasing the name before E3 was very smart in retrospect, because it was old news and had no chance to overshadow the experience.
That's my opinion, not yours.

I'm not over the name, I just don't see any need to continue ranting about it.  I still think it's a horrible name but it isn't going to change and I can't keep calling it by a rumoured codename so I've gotten used to typing "Wii".  It's too soon to say the name has been accepted or not yet anyway because the general public still doesn't know about it.  The concern was never "that name sucks so I won't buy it".  It was "that name isn't going to go over well with the mainstream and thus the console may sell poorly."  It really makes no difference if the online gaming community gets used to the name or not because we're interested enough in games to look beyond marketing to get informed about the real product.

But after E3 I haven't been nearly as concerned about the Wii's future.  I look at what we know about the PS3 and think "this thing has no chance in hell" so at the very least Nintendo is ensured a decent market share merely because they're not screwing up as much as Sony.  The only way now I see Nintendo losing is if everyone loses and there's another crash.  If the Wii flops it won't be the only one.
