Japanese Publishers Stress PS3 Patching

Quote

Unozawa offered thoughts on next-generation platforms from Nintendo and Sony. Regarding the Wii, he said, "There will be many people who play with friends and family. Nintendo DS connectivity is also interesting. It will probably become the Wii's touch screen controller."    Unozawa did mention some potential pitfalls with the Wii, suggesting that it may not be as accepted by middle school and high school gamers, and that third parties may have a harder time making games for it when compared to Nintendo's own internal development team. He noted, with a laugh, "With Nintendo hardware, your biggest rival is Nintendo."    Regarding Nintendo's competition, Unozawa said, "The PlayStation 3 will definitely sell."

Earlier in the article he also talked about with Online capability they can know not do as much debugging because they could patch games.  Anybody who is a PC gamer knows how bad that is.  The last thing I want on my console game is to have to wait for the patch and then not be able to play it 15 years down the road because the patch no longer exists.

Nomura and Kojima Talk PS3 (The article this is from)

Quote

Based on his comments with Ge-Maga, Kojima seems to be highly favorable of Sony's strategy. "If you think about the future of the industry and game creators, I get the feeling that the winner had better be the movie theater -- or, the PS3. No one will say that the price is cheap. However, the PS3 is 'the future.' The Wii is interesting, but in terms of functions, it's a machine with past concepts."    Kojima has also been one of the strongest supporters of the Wii's new control system. In ths latest interview, he added, "The best thing would be a PS3 with controls like the Wii."

Quote

This lead to talk about collaborations, which of course, lead to talk of Solid Snake's appearance in the Wii version of Smash Brothers: "That was very surprising," said Nomura. "Cloud won't make an appearance?" asked Kojima. "We didn't get an offer," responded Nomura with a laugh.

From a Different PS3 Article.  I think it's interesting to hear what people say in Interviews for the other camp.  Actually it sort of flattering that the wii is even mentioned that much.  360 got like 3 words.  Also if Cloud was announced for Brawl.  I won't be getting the game until I hear very very solid reviews.  Especially from cool headed people here.  That would totally scream sell-out to me.  I mean they could then take it all the way.  Put in Coke for an item or other advertising.  blah... Sorry about the rant.

Edit1: Adding links and second article.
Edit2: Found Smash Brother quote in above article and added opinions which will probably be mimicked in the Brawl thread.

Where's our link?

Very true.  ON the pc, games are often released in buggy states and fixed later if the game sells well.

Good point about Nintendo being a big rival to other developers on their own console.  That is a sort of curse to Nintendo being so heavily involved with both the software and hardware and the fact they tend to make high quality games.  Supposedly they are being more open this time around by giving 3rd parties greater access to the hardware sooner than ever.

Good point too about Nintendo perhaps not being the thing that young males in middle school and high school want.  It might not be dark and bloody enough for 'em.

Actually why you were typing I was getting the links setup and another interesting article.  Also in another one that I read they actually came out and stated that Sony is losing $200 dollars on every PS3 sold.

I've always thought Red Steel is the answer to this. It may not be bloody, but any game which allows the player to hold a gun "gangsta style" and wield a sword as if you were holding the handle should just bury the competition when it comes to who has the "cooler" console.

As for the interviews...

Quote

Kojima seems to feel that the PS3 is needed for the industry to progress. "If the evolutionary roads like the PS3 are closed off, the industry will no longer grow," he said. He used the film Poseidon's Adventure as an example of the film industry's growth from low-budget to high-budget films. "Making games for the PS3 will of course cost money, but if you put a stop to that, what will happen to the game industry? Is it okay if everyone just makes variety-style games? It will become like television is now. Comedians make an appearance in a quiz-style show -- that's not culture."

Whose pocket is Kojima in? I'm guessing Konami who is likely in the pocket of Sony because I cannot imagine that even he believes the BS he's spewing here. The industry will allegedly not grow if we remove a non-innovating, graphic-intensive console from the market? I don't think the industry will ever have to worry about not wanting to upgrade games graphically since it's been doing THAT since 1970.

I think the best thing is that Kojima compared the idea behind remaking "Poseidon's Adventure" to the PS3's strategy... is he not aware that the remake "Poseidon" tanked horribly at the box office and is going to lose Warner Bros millions of dollars?

Awesome example.

We are talking about the same man who insulted SSBM just cause Solid Snake couldn't be in it. Ok, I'm not sure if this is actually true, but it's not out of the question. Why would you want your character in the game if you don't like it in the first place? I know I wouldn't beg someone to add my character if I didn't like the game.

Kojima's a devil's advocate. I don't trust or respect this man very much.

I would hate to see Cloud in SSBB, he's never been on a Nintendo system which should automatically cancel him out. I would much rather see the Ninja or Black Mage from 3x3 in SSBB.

Now if FFVII where to be released on the DS I wouldn't have as much of a problem with Cloud, But I still don't want to see him, I'm sick and tired of all the FFVII crap. Its time for Square to shelve FFVII and stop milking it.

Whoa whoa whoa...

I don't think SSBB needs anything...

Nintendo charachters have and always will suffice. Nintendo has to be careful when allowing other IP's to join Smash. It could become a slippery slope that eventually takes away from the innocent fun that was SSB, and turns into something akin to Capcom vs. SNK, with loads of charachters that noone wants to play with.

Thats why they should only be adding a few 3rd party characters. no more than 4 or 5 at the most, you've got to save the exclusivity of the SSB club so that you can add a few more in the next version. It will also promote more third parties to release their big franchises on Nintendo platforms.

but as far as a CvSnk scenario, if Nintendo were to take that route they should release it as a completely different game based on the SSB engine - Nintendo vs The World or something like that.

But I think I'll stop helping to further derail this topic

On the subject, Kojima is out of his goddamn mind.

Claiming that "The Wii is interesting, but in terms of functions, it's a machine with past concepts." is the most retarded thing I've ever heard from a game developer, especially when his comparison is based on the idea that insanely overpriced consoles with better graphics than the last generation aren't "past concepts", despite the fact that this is what the industry has been doing since its inception.

For the sake of these guys, I'd pray that no one remembers dumbass comments like these when the PS3 crashes and burns. If I were Iwata, I'd be writing this sh*t down just so I could read it back to Konami when they come looking for a Wii dev kit.

I'd let them develop for it, but not without some hazing first.

I think he's referring to the idea of movies instead of games.

When Wii absolutely kills PS3 in Japan and America alike (but probably not in Europe, pompous jerks) then I have a feeling almost all these guys are going to be caught-pants down and embarassed that they supported PS3. Everyone but Itagaki, the bald, leather-wearing English teacher of the group, will jump from PS3 to Wii in an instant, leaving PS3 with a group that Sony will call "Sony Team of Dreams"

I gathered that's what he meant, but I still think it's a ridiculous thing to say given that the entire focus of the Wii is innovation.

If nothing else, it'll look even worse when taken out of context.

I concur.

I wonder if it'll be the PSP all over again: system sells well but the software tie-in ratio is god awful, leaving Sony with squat for a profit margin yet again.

Then again, $200 vs. $600 is a HUGE difference. I still think the price will kill 90% of their potential sales. Even the Xbox 360 has seen limited success at its price (the numbers are definitely lower than predicted, especially given that it's the only next gen console out there) and it actually has some decent titles out.

I can't imagine how bad the PS3 will do with a big, fat $600 and garbage for a launch lineup.

Kojima is too much of a Sony whore to jump ship. The PSP hasn't even been out for two years, and they're already working on a third MGS game, and some interactive comic book UMD thing.

I'm still waiting for him to call the Wii "kiddy", just like he did with the Cube and the DS. It wouldn't be a true Nintendo platform without him saying that.

Damn. KDR just pwned Kojima. I believe he already did say that the Wii is a console intended for a younger audience. I'll look that up today (or tonight). At some point though, he'll have to apologize to Miyamoto again. Maybe after the crushing defeat of the PS3?

I still want Nintendo to semi-jokingly remind him that they're very friendly with Ubi right now and that Snake and Sam Fisher are practically interchangeable in a fighting game like SSBB...

I don't think they'd do that, Nintendo always got the shaft with the Splinter Cell games. People would look at Fisher and think "XBox".
