Wii - One Syllable Word
« on: June 22, 2006, 11:29:30 AM »
I didn't really see a good place to put this, so I had to start a new thread.

There's an article over at Yahoo News called Most common nouns in English.  It has absolutely nothing to do with Wii.

However, there was one thing that I found pretty interesting.
Quote

"The thing that struck me when I put together this list was that 90 percent of the top 100 words were one syllable," Stevenson said.
I know a lot of people were complaining that the name was too short when the final console name was first announced (myself included).  Having a name with just one syllable felt odd.  However, it seems like that's not the case afterall.

Perhaps Nintendo was right all along.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

I always felt one syllable was nothing but an advantage.  Of course, I liked the name in general, but the number of syllables really doesn't matter.  Now there's no need to ever shorten the name.
That's my opinion, not yours.

What's the most popular word in the English language?  F*ck.  It's got to be.  It's the only word I've heard used by people speaking a non-English language as part of their regular speech.  It's pretty much become a universal word, understood by all languages.  It's one syllable so maybe Nintendo is on to something.

But then I never had any objection to the length of the name.  I just thought it was a really stupid name (and still do).

one sillable names are great, I really didn't see any complains about the name for being short. actually I was sure the name was going to be "go", or "rs", or maybe "N5", and the rumored names were for the most part really short. Being short is not what made a lot of people to hate the name.

Hey, cool, vudu quoted me!

But anyway, I'm not surprised that the most common nouns are one-syllable.  But then again why complicate things?  When man started with language and started naming things, it's not like they were going to overcomplicate things.  Even if they did, by the time English came around, laziness probably ensured that we'd use "dog" over "canine" and etc.

Even long words and phrases are likely to be shortened over time.  No one even says something as short as "What is up?" when they could say "What's up?" then "Wazzup?" or "'Sup?"  Next thing you know we'll just be saying "Up?"

I notice there are a lot of movies in the past decade that are just one word, or "The [___]".  No one ever makes movies with crazy titles like "Attack of the 50-Foot Woman" anymore.

What about Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World or Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl?  There was a little phase a few years back where every film had a long name with a useless sub-title.

Ian:  Actually I would bet Love is more used and universally understood than the good ole F word.

I am sure there are others as well.  As in Me or I.

I don't recall anyone complaining about one syllable.  I recall people complaining about the horrid faux word, Wii.

You ever hear people who don't speak English suddenly just plug "love" into the middle of their sentence?  I swear to God aliens would come to Earth and the first thing they would say would be "BLOOGA BLOOGA F*CK ARKEN BLOOGA".

I just registered to say that the most common English word spoken globally is actually "okay."
I saw it on one of the big evening news shows a while back. I suppose it had been a slow news day.

SNAKES ON A PLANE!

hm...my suggestion for the most popular word in english would either be the f-bomb that ian suggested, or "like".
working at a mall thats the only word you ever hear:

"so like......i like...and totally like....and he like......so i like.....and then like......"
