Has the DSL and Mario Bros. set things right in the USA?
« on: June 22, 2006, 11:01:14 AM »
Okay, everyone seems all doom and gloom about how the PSP has been selling more up until may than the DS, but I'm not really worried because we were talking about the old heavy cheap-plastic model of DS which was as unsexy as a handheld gaming device could possibly be. Anyone who considered purchasing a DS was probably holding off until the DSL was released so they would either wait or buy the PSP. This explains why up til May the DS was being outsold in the USA.

Now, however, the DSL has been unleashed and it will be interesting to see sales figures for June. I expect June will be the PSP's Stalingrad.... for those who don't know, Stalingrad was a battle in WW2 where the Germans were defeated and it turned the tide of the war in favor of the allies. The PSP will be defeated this month, I predict, and the tide of the war will shift in favor of the Allies, err, I mean... Nintendo.

And of course we have Mario, whereas Sony has... I don't know. Uh, Lumines I guess. I don't really follow the PSP much anymore.
is your sanity...

We were just discussing this in the Official DS Sales Thread

It looks like the situation is improving, but we should wait until the summer is over to get a better picture.

DS has been fine in the U.S. and I think a good argument could be made that it has been beating the pants off PSP. Why you ask? Well its games have been outselling PSP's by a large margin, and like any game console, it is game sales that determine its overall success not just systems sold.

The DS should outsell the PSP in June, and most likely the next two months, but after that, it'll probably be back to the usual neck and neck battle.

Even without the DSL, the PSP's relative failure in the global market would have eventually brought it to a halt it in the US. But I do think the DSL is going to considerably speed up the progress.

Brought it to a halt in the US?  How do you figure?  It's still selling very well in the US.

Globally its only behind the DS by a few million.

And you're forgetting Pokemon Diamond/Pearl for DS. Last I heard it will be out in Japan by September. When ever that lands here in America it going push DS hardware stock like crazy if not sell it out.

Edit: Heaven forbid its before Thanksgiving weekend.

Not gonna happen. The US needs Pokemon, or for GBA to stop existing, until the DS starts existing.

Oh, and Brain Age is doing more for the DS than New SMB.

Pokemon isn't as powerful as it was when it first came out.  The craze is over.  It'll push DS units, but not as much as you think it would.

Pokemon's a fad, guys. Come on now. You'll see. Just you wait. By the time 1998 rolls around nobody will like Pokemon anymore.
