Take Two will give 3D Realms a $500,000 bonus if the game is released this year.

If you're worried that this might cause 3D Realms to rush the game, though, don't! They're assuring people that, contrary to what you might think, they'll take as much time on the game as they need:

Does anyone even believe this game is ever coming out? Hasn't been in the works for like 6 years?

3D Realms is reallying screwing itself over, because there is no way in hell it can live up to the hype they are creating for it.

How can can it? The original games were comedy shooters that focused on intense, but comical gameplay.

Are they trying to add a story? RPG elements? Futuristic guns that have never been done before? Seriously, what could take this long?

Its a big joke.

I am putting all my money in on a bet that Duke Nukem isn't even being worked on. The reality is they are using the popular title only as news story for publicity sake.

I had completely forgotten about it until wandering reposted a story about it.

Duke Nukem was an established a very popular character YEARS ago. It was great game filled with original design concepts, and personality. Duke Nukem showed the world that FPS did not have to be Doom.

The problem is. 3D Realms wanted too long and have tried too hard to create "the perfect game." The character recognition and name recognition is gone and lost. 3D Realms could have easily made 2 games that were good to great (not perfect) in the franchise and have an established franchise for years to come.

Instead, they have a character that few people will remember and few will care about.

If I was Take-Two I would consider suing them rather than offering a bonus. There's got to be some breach of contract in taking this long and wasting publisher money.

Duke Nukem Forever is a joke and so is 3D Realms. Aside from the name recognition like Spak-Spang mentioned there's also the problem that since Duke Nukem 3D so many advancements have been made in first person shooters. For example online multiplayer wasn't nearly as sophisticated at the time and games like Goldeneye and Half-Life have taken the single player modes beyond the Doom-style "shoot everything and find keys" design. Hell Duke3D was a sprite based game. By taking so long they've fallen into a trap where FPS "standards" keep changing so they have to rehaul their "game" each time to keep up. If you take too long on something new trends will pass you by and you'll either have a dated looking project OR you'll have to keep redoing things.

That's why Guns N Roses' "new album" has become such a joke. Not only has it taken forever but that style of music isn't even popular anymore.

From what I understand, 3D Realms is only spending their own money. It's not like Duke Nukem Forever is the only thing they're working on, either. They made a killing on the Max Payne games, and they're releasing Prey soon, too.

Ian, you gotta remember That Guns "N" Roses isn't the same Guns "N" Roses from days past. Most of the original members have left and formed Velvet Revolver. Probably why guns doesn't sound the same:p

I know. I'm just using it as an example of a project taking so long that regardless of how good the result is, no one cares because times have changed. Another example would be Boston. Their first album came out in 1976. They have released five albums total. The second one came out only two years later and was a number 1 hit. However the main songwriter is a major perfectionist so the next album didn't come out until the mid 80s, well after Boston's style of music was no longer popular. They've continued with a release schedule of one album per decade. I've heard some of the songs from the later albums and they're good enough to stand along side the hits from the 70s. They could have been big hits if the band had their sh!t together and didn't take a million years to release stuff. But they took too long so no one cared.

That's 3D Realms. They sat down quite a few years ago now to make the ultimate FPS. If they ever get it done it will probably be the ultimate FPS from the perspective of 1998 or so. But who cares because it ain't 1998. It's like if ten years ago you set out to make the greatest VCR of all time and are just about done.

Actually, Duke Nukem was a 2D platforming hero in his first two games - games I prefer over the 3D games. When Duke Nukem 3D came out, I immediately disliked it - FPSes were popular but there were too many at the time, and this still had sprite-based enemies - and the character went way too macho-like. Not that he wasn't a tough guy in the 2D games, but now it was all "I'M A MACHO MAN AND I SHOOT ALIENS BECAUSE I'M BIG AND STRONG AND MACHO." I thought the character went downhill from there (even if there wasn't much there to begin with), but many people were only just learning about him at this point.

Jonleung: I remember the 2D games. They were quite enjoyable games. However, I believe the mass market got on board with Duke 3D, while you were jumping off because they betrayed the character in your eyes.

Spak, I may be wrong but I believe Duke Nukem forever has been in production since 1996 (at least in some form), so it has been 10 years!

Have Steve Case come on board and bang the lead developer of the project.
When she's not banging the lead developer, have her create a board or two
so she can get credit for "making" the game.
Oops that already happened once and didn't work out.

Hey that makes two of us, it seems like the day I got my N64 with Mario 64 was only a few years back. To make matters worse I remember the excitment I had when Super Mario Bros 3 came out!

I assume most people here know that Steve Case is a girl that once posed in Playboy.

Here's a little Steve Case side story...
Ever read PC Gamer? They use to run their annual "Gaming Gods" issue. In this issue paritcular issue they had the usuals, John Carmack, John Romero, Tim Sweney, ect. However in this little group was also Steve Case. This was pre-Daikatana, but post Quake 2.

At this point in time I had never heard of Steve Case so I looked up her history online. Apperantly she designed two boards in Quake 2 and beat John Romero in an online game of Quake. Apperantly this made her a "Gaming God"...

Since that issue I have never read PC Gamer again.

I think DNF will have to step aside to Starcraft:Ghost as the new king of vaporware.

Considering a Google search for "Steve Case" turns up nothing but the one time AOL CEO, and then a search for "Steve Case Playboy" turns up nothing but results for the one time AOL CEO... I'd say most people haven't heard of this person before.

Did a read of the article from Wikipedia, though, and came up with this name: "Stevie Case".. which probably wouldn't have caused such a confusion in relation to the poor AOL CEO.

According to the article, the shots that were taken for Playboy never ended up getting used in the magazine either (ouch...).
