Toys 'R Us in Australia have a big sign offering a free Wii game at launch if you pre-order Wii with a $50 AUD deposit.

The sign also promoted a tentative November 6 Aussie launch.

Hmm that image doesn't look like it's on your webspace.

Aug 6th? No way. They are promising to announce the release date "before September." In Nintendo speak that means August 31st.

The date isn't in that photo, and what crazy retailer gives away free games at launch? It's normally the opposite -- they FORCE you to buy additional games if you want one of the first systems. Did you take this photo yourself, AussieDude? If so, could you go back and get more, clearer photos and get details of this deal from a store rep?

Its Nov 6th, not Aug 6th.
No I didnt take it the photo, I contacted toys are Us and they quoted tentative November 6th.

Toys R Us is kicking off their "next-generation" early pre-sell campaign by giving everyone who preorders a Wii (as well as Playstation 3) a free game. All you need to do is head down to Toys R Us and put down $50 on either console. The free game you will receive will be one of the Wii launch games for Australia. This is an offer only for Toys R Us stores and is not a preorder campaign run by Nintendo Australia.

Well my preoders in @ toys are us for Wii and PS3 (cancelled PS3 preorder @ EB as they wouldnt match the free game), even though Im mainly just getting the PS3 for the blueray DVD player.

You know they've been quick to include the Australian market. I think it be Hilarious if Nintendo's "World Wide" release started in Australia->Europe->America->Japan. That would be so amusing.

Yeah, poor Aussies have gotten the shaft so often when it comes to releases. It'd be nice for them to get the first batch for a change instead of the last (or sometimes not at all).

Nov 6? What a birthday I'll be having this year!

A free game would be nice seeing as how we get screwed on the price. For once I'd love to see the price be determined by Yen / A$ instead of the usual US$ / Euro / A$. But just like an early launch in Australia, I don't see it happening.

I'm still waiting for Chibi-Robo as well Nintendo Australia.

I went to my local toys r us to see if we had it. Not only was it there but it was right as you walk in the front door and impossible to miss unless you had your eyes shut.

In comparison the ps3 equivelent poster ws in the middle of nowhere in particular and easily missed.

Maybe it's not nice to assume Australia is always last, but doesn't this mean that the Japanese and North Americans (I use that term since I live in Canada) will likely get it earlier than Nov. 6th, and/or that Nintendo is capable of pulling off a near-simultaneous worldwide launch?

You know I always wonder how long it takes a cargo ship to get from Japan to America. That's how you ship bulk right? I mean you think since AUS is right there they get things quicker but they are PAL aren't they? Maybe this is a sign that there going the DS route and making it region free. You just have to set what your TV is at the beginning.

Wouldn't it be a cost-cutting measure to simply to make it region-free anyway? Especially if they want to sell it inexpensively?

If they want to keep the DVD-playing part specific to regions, they could keep that limitation on the DVD dongle or whatever extension you need for DVD playback. The Wii itself could very well go without that.

I don't see much point to limiting to particular regions, honestly. I'm sure there's some reason that I could look up on Wikipedia but when many people have region-free DVD players and region-free DVDs, and can easily mod their game systems or find workarounds to that, it really seems like a moot point.

Anyway, as Australia speaks English, you'd think they could get games at the same time as North America. But then again Canadian packaging requires French as well...does American packaging require Spanish?

Not anymore. English is now the official language. Actually they just don't include spanish most of the time. I find that if the game has a different language than English or English/Japanese available it's going to be a low quality game. I thought that because of the whole PAL thing, different framerates, color, etc., was the whole reason that the regions where in place. (The real regions. It's ridiculously easy to mod a Cube to play Japanese games.) DS you obviously only have 1 standard. I guess it really consider how much it costs extra to put in the peice of hardware that converts from a common resolution and all to the specific area resolution and it would require more setup which is somewhat bad for most consumers who want to just plug and play.

Edit: I finally found it. Aus is Pal and USA/JPN is NTSC. Thats the reason. The Language might be the same but the standards are different. Standards win in this case.

Well Canadian games come out the same time as American ones regardless of any French. And I've found it's not a hard and fast rule. Nintendo's games typically have both languages but third party games rarely do or sometimes they have a French manual shrink wrapped to the case. Personally I find the whole thing pointless since the games are only in English so anyone who exclusively speaks French is sh!t out of luck even if they can read the packaging.

Sometimes though a store gets in American copies which I always prefer because bilingual packaging is ugly for collection purposes.

What I think they should do is release the English language European and Australian versions ASAP and then, assuming it takes longer, release the other languages for Europe later on (unless there's some legal reason they can't do this). There's no reason why an English PAL version in Europe should come out quicker than an Australian version since they're both the same TV format and the same language.

you can count with one (maybe two) hand(s) the amount of US games that came with spanish packaging/manual/text/etc.....

Actually I dont know why they even bother about PAL (even though its superior to NTSC

), as all modern TVs are multiformat play NTSC as well. It would probable only effect <0.5% of people.

Hardly any TVs exist in Australia now that wont play NTSC, and some DVDs (mainly older releases) are now following suit and are NTSC zone 4.

Agreed, look at MP2:E only playable on an NTSC tv, same with Zelda Collectors Ed.
