Topic: New Ads at PGC

During the month of June, we are installing some new ad networks which will support the website financially.  I'm really excited about these opportunities, because we were running only Google ads there for over a month, and that's risky business.

So you should start seeing banners, in-line Flash ads, even a pop-up now and then.  It is my intent to make sure that the ads do not get out of hand as they were before.  I think there is a certain amount of advertising that a person can live with before getting annoyed, and although that amount is different for each person, I hope to find a level that will be acceptable to nearly all our readers and yet still support the site.  We weren't filling either of those requirements very well earlier this year.

As always, I would appreciate your feedback on the ads -- how they look, whether they are appropriate, whether they slow down the site's loading, whether they seem better targeted to the stuff you're interested in, etc.

Even a single pop up is annoying, IMHO.  But as long as we don't end up with pop-ups on every page or any advertisements with sound, I won't complain too much.

Can't promise there will be no sound, but I am going to make sure you don't get a pop-up on every page.  It should be about one per visit to the site.

Can I at least request that the sound be limited to mouse roll-over, something akin to the Rockstar Table Tennis ads that have taken over the internet?

Ads with sounds just make me close that window and reload it again to make the offending ad go away.  And that just puts more of a strain on your bandwidth, right?

Popups and sound in ads is something I don't expect to see outside of warez or porn sites. Since when is PGC illegal?

The rollover requirement for sound seems very reasonable, so I will look into that.  So far, I have not heard any ads with sound on PGC, though.  There is a pop-up activated in the staff-only pages, but I don't think it is on the main site yet.

I get a pop-up about getting some crappy degree every so often on the main page, but that doesn't bother me.

I got an ad with sound (once) on the main page (it was for emoticons - yay!) - that one was back on the 10th when I posted that ads with sound make me want to block ads.

I do appericate you looking into the idea of restricting the sound to being activated with rollovers.  Thanks Johnny!

I don't know if its just the PC I'm using at the moment, but I'm getting that "FREE WACKY GO GO MAGIC SMILEY FUN WOW WOW!" pop up with every thread I go into, and it plays the "HEEELLLOOO" or "OH MY GOD NO WAAAAY" soundbyte if I accidently hover over them. It's amusing because I scared the guy next to me.

These class computers are loaded with spyware and God knows what else though. Haven't had much chance to browse at home yet.

Infernal, I think you are probably having adware problems.  I am 99% sure we have filtered out porn ads, and you should definitely not be getting a pop-up on every page.

I just got an ad for Verizon that was in Spanish.  I think that it goods to be getting more mainstream adds but it's bad to be getting them in a language different from the forums common language, no offense to anyone.

I thought I post this here.  I'm glad to see the Ad Council ads.  They havea lot of good meaningful ads but they seem to run them at the weirdest time.  I mean like trying to teach us to be a proper dad try during Saturday Morning Cartoons... Ok...

I occasionally get those ads where you go to the main page, and before you can actually see it you see 'NWR is brought to you by...', and a 'continue' link. I think the last one I saw was Marapets, which is at least better than those Pheromone Headquarters ads that used to come up all the time.
