In the non-linear game I yearn for, I am not the only determinant of how something turns out. In such a game, I can play it the same way everytime but other factors beyond my control and knowledge and turning events in such a way that I'm forced to adapt, not by choice, but by story and survival necessity.

How bout Animal Crossing?

...Not counting the survival necessity part, I mean. And the story part.
“...there are those who would...say, '...If I could just not have to work everyday...that would be the most wonderful life in the world.' They don't know life. Because what makes life mean something is purpose.  The battle. The struggle.  Even if you don't win it.” - Richard M. Nixon

LOL. Well then, what's left?

But seriously, the benefits I'm looking for from a non-linear game are the challenges to my self-identity, challenges to my perception of the world around me, and challenges to my ability to exist within that world. To the extent that Animal Crossing accomplishes that, I DO consider it part of my ideal non-linear experience.

A glooming peace this morning with it brings;
The sun, for sorrow, will not show his head:
Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things;
Some shall be pardon'd, and some punished:
For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Sega and her Mashiro.
