Alright, first they've rounded it down below $300, now $250.

Speaking at the company's latest press conference unveiling its financial results, Nintendo revealed that Wii would arrive in Japanese stores with a maximum price tag of 25,000 yen. Whipping out our calculators and doing some quick sums, that roughly translates as 222 USD or 174 euros. By way of comparison, the PS3 will retail for 62,790 yen (558 USD/437 euro) at launch, while the Xbox 360 currently sells at 39,795 yen (277 USD/353 euro).

So the $250 price tag sounds about right

Which indicates to me they are going with a bundle at launch (hopefully a Wii, a couple of controllers and Wii sports)

Yeah - obviously $250 dollars = 250 Euro = £250 pounds in electronic retail land.

It might not be so bad though for the Wii - IIRC the Gamecube came out at about 180 pounds, which taking sales tax into account wasn't actually far off the US prices of $250

True, but I don't really want a PS3 so that doesn't upset me so much - I kind of didn't realise I was ripped off so much when I bought my Cube and it means I'm presumably gonna get shafted buying a Wii as well.

Computers and other electronic stuff isn't generally that much more expensive in Europe any more but the games industry seems to be one of the last hold outs for serious exchange rate gouging - one thing the internet and the Euro have done is make it easier to see when you're being ripped off compared to people in other countries...

I'd expect 150 GBP for UK if I were you (Since the direct conversion puts it at around 120 GBP)

And probably around 200 Euros

With the Canadian dollar approaching the U.S. dollar, I wonder if we'll still pay more for the Wii? I like how this says North America, so it sounds like there's no way I'm going to pay more than $250 no matter what. Noice.

Oh yeah, I think they said the shipments are for the fiscal year, which means that they're going to try to sell this much before March, not just in November and December.

I think we pretty much already knew this price point. $200-$250 for a Wii. The extra fifty dollars isn't that big of a deal...except that if the Xbox 360 drops price some this holiday season, then $250 won't look like that great of a deal.

Personally I hope Nintendo looks back to the past at the NES system bundles. The reason the NES was so cool was that you could buy a system and have two controllers, a light gun, and a game in a single package. It made it an easier single purchase, because you could immediately play.

I believe this type of packaging is a must to for the nongamer. One package and you get two controllers, and a simple game to immediately play.

I would beg for the $250 price point if they did that for us.

If the Wii came bundled with a second controller or a game (WiiSports?) or even both, than a $250 price tag is justified and would definitely be very attractive during the holidays.

Retailers might not like bundling by Nintendo - it would show up what crap deals the retailers own launch bundles typically are...

But don't the retailers just have to threaten not to stock the Wii or hide it in the back of the shop somewhere? I thought that big retailers hold a lot of power over their suppliers in general and particularly in the games industry.

Having said that, I guess Sony and MS are already paying retailers to put Nintendo stuff on small out of the way shelves, so perhaps Nintendo have nothing to lose...

We always pay a little more more. I expect Wii to launch at $200US and then here in Canada we see it at $249.99 which would be a total rip-off if the canadian dollar keeps its strength until the Wii's launch.

Walmart, Best Buy, Circuit City etc. are not at all likely to try to keep Nintendo out of their stores due to bundles, they don't really care, and if they have it, do you really think Gamestop is going to try to? They wouldn't risk losing the sales, so no I don't see how they have any say in that matter.

The only way that they could excert that power is if all stores tried to pull that, and if Walmart isn't going to then no other comapny will, at least not in the US. Don't know about the UK or Canada, but if big box stores keep them in stock then the samller game stores will do it also.

Over here, unless a product is a must have purchase, the big outlets basically sell shelf space to their suppliers. Nintendo wouldn't play so they got poor quality spots in the shops. Then, as soon as the Gamecube started to look like it wasn't doing well, some prominent chains dropped it entirely. On the other hand, even though the Xbox1 didn't do spectacularly well here either, it still gets good shelf space - because Microsoft pay for it.
