Wii hardware dimensions?
« on: May 24, 2006, 02:18:49 PM »
Anyone know the dimensions for the console and the controllers (Wiimote, Nunchuk)?  Lots of pics out there, but I haven't seen any sizing.   Any help would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks!

They said it would be slightly smaller than 3 DVD cases stacked on top of each other. Don't know the exact dimensions, but, yeah, that's pretty small..

I am expecting it to be really small, but I still suspect that when I finally get my hands on my Wii (hehe, sorry) I will be shocked at how small it is.  I did the same thing with the cube, I got one of those demo disks so I knew what size it was gonna be, but when i took it out of the package the size of the thing still floored me.

Current & Next-Gen Console Size Comparison
It's not a new image, so I don't know how much the dimensions have changed since then.  But it's pretty impressive that the Wii is about a quarter the size of any of the other next-gen consoles.

Well, measure the drive slot on a device, then see how that compares to the system. It's time. Add like an inch to either side of the disc width and you have the total width.

And it's depressing to think it's going to be about a quarter as powerful for around half the price...

I'm banking on that and I'm not sure I'd buy a 360 or a PS3 even at the price the Wii is expected to launch at because I don't expect them to be any fun.

Still. I think we need to remember that we're not getting something for nothing with the cheap price though and the small form factor is obviously easier to engineer if you've got slower, lower power hardware in there. I don't think the size is a great achievement - it's going to be about as powerful as a Mac Mini, and it's about the same size.

A quarter as powerful?  Ehhhh, I certainly am not the only one who really isn't seeing a HUGE jump between this gen and the next...Plus, looking at a power/price comparison is about as jaded and disgusting a gamer can get, so don't fall into that pit of despair...

The best plausible specs we have so far are a single PPC at around 1.1 GHz, probably derived from 750FX or 750GX. This CPU is barely superscaler with limited SIMD support. The GPU is apparently just a Flipper stretch - it possibly doesn't even have more pipes than Flipper and may still only be fixed function. It's up against CPUs with similar IPC, three times the clock and multiple cores and GPUs with complex shader support and many more pipes. To say it's a quarter as powerful may be flattering it, unfortunately.

I don't particularly care about the power deficit - as I've repeatedly said before, I don't really want what Sony or MS are offering because I don't like the kinds of games they license on their systems, irrespective of how many FLOPS or pixels they push and that I think I can count on Nintendo for a system that will provide me with entertaining games at a non-outrageous price. However, I don't think we owe Nintendo a great debt of gratitude for the expected price or need to be overawed that they've fitted low-end laptop parts into a small case.

[EDIT: clarify specs]

At the current rate, we all may thank Nintendo when cases of rampant back injuries are the norm when people are trying to deal with a 20kg PS4 or the like...

Smaller(on paper) leaps in tech specs where developers are better able to max things out and truly master the machine vs huge tech spec leaps that will quite possibly never max anything out and nobody will have mastered the machine.  Factor in that we are already, with the GC and such, nearing points of diminishing returns...and well...it seems quite clear to me what Nintendo is doing.

I still stand by my cliff analogy in my Wii Greed topic.

I'm not sure that the PS3 or Xbox360 will be significantly harder to wring performance out of - yes, multi-threaded programming is difficult and writing on the bare metal is difficult but any programmer worth their salt should be able to do those things and with game budgets at the levels they are, developers will have no problem attracting programmers who can get close to optimal results out of all three next gen systems. Worse still, any performance gap will widen over the course of the upcoming console generation if the PS3 and 360 really are harder to develop for because there won't be any headroom to squeeze better results out of the Wii.

Again - I should stress that I don't particularly see this as a terribly bad situation - provided the Wii is cheap and the games are good fun. I just don't think we should kid ourselves about graphic quality we can expect or how much hardware our money will be buying.

Of course not. I'd be an idiot to use that stuff myself, it's much more profitable to sell it to others. Around 30000 Credits for a run that's a mere two hyperspace jumps long. Maybe a short battle with space pirates but that's it.

TBH i don't think that sony or MS have anywhere left to go with either of their current console franchises, unless they just create a totally new line of concoles which wouldn't really work that well, as most people would stick to these current consoles. nintendo however seem to have a good gap for improvement on mosty of their consoles, yet all seem to be brilliant when released... the only fault i found with my Wii is *and this is really picky* that the character movements are a split second behind my actual movements. also the graphics are a bit low standard compared to the PS and Xbox consoles, but if it were about a year ago or so then they would, i think, be regarded as awesome
