The designer said he had been working with different ideas and had found that too much use of the controller's pointing and motion-sensor functions was not a good thing. He then dropped a hint, saying gamers may not want to throw away their old GameCube controllers, which the Wii supports. Sakurai then said he wants to support the console but offer something different from other Wii games."

Unless he was just dropping that hint to be cruel, it seems pretty clear that he wants to use the GCN controller for the game. I wouldn't be surprised if it's simple out of respect to the Melee tournaments, for those who familiarzed the game with the old controller (which fit the game like a glove). He is very much aware of those too, and the tiers they established, so I wouldn't doubt that it could have been a key factor in why he wants to push GCN controllers. The fact that he isn't working at Nintendo full time also makes it more likely that he will get his wish and not have to conform to using the other two controllers.

Arbok:  I do remember that.  And I am not saying it won't be controlled with the Gamecube Controller...it just isn't set in stone...even with that hint.

And I don't see how that hint would neglect allowing the classic controller shell to be used with the system.  Why limit it to the Gamecube controller, when you may have new adaptors of the Wii system buying the new classic shell instead of the Gamecube controller.

It's odd, but besides being barely improved year after year, I love most of SNK games.....maybe it's the characters?
oh well, if we get a KOF Collection I would be very happy ^^ (despite having my ass handed in a silver plate in most of them ¬¬)

I have one question, why would one need the shell for SSBB? the SSB games always used the stick and four buttons....

Yeah, disregarding the C-Stick, you could have A for normal attacks, the B trigger for the specials, one of the shoulder buttons on the analogue attachment for jump, and the other for shield. The only thing missing would be the Z button for throw, but, of course, you can do it the other way. Maybe, if these are implemented, they wouldn't feel right, though; I would need to play it to see.

Wouldn't it be interesting if you could use either the wiimote, shell, or GCN controller, and certain characters played "better" somehow for each controller? The only problem would be tiers could become an even bigger problem.

Anyway, getting back on topic, SNK giving full Wii support is great news! It seems devs are seeing Wii as the system to put their 2D games on.... Perhaps we'll see Sammy bring the Guilty Gear series. Or even better, Capcom notices how well 2D games are doing on the Wii, so they decide to make Street Fighter 4 exclusively for Wii!! Nippon Ichi follows by bringing Disgaea 3 to the system along with full support.

You can bet they'll still release their 2D games on PS3 in Japan and Europe, where Sony just doesn't care about content. Hell, they release the Metal Slug and KoF games here one by one on PS2, charging full freakin' price for each one.

Its not that big a problem for SNK, just get some third party like MadCatz (who's the only one I know for sure is already on board) to develop a specialized 2D controller. Anyone interested in 2D fighters is going to insist on something better suited to it than a Gamecube controller anyhow...

Those controllers don't generally cost that much, you could even do a pack-in:

Or better still, sell the controller with a code to download a few of SNK's classic titles.

IIRC, didn't the Metal Slug director already say that they weren't going to bring the next one to Xbox 360 or PS3 because those systems were ill-suited to 2D content?

AMN: So, what plans do you have for Metal Slug 6?

Ben Herman: Still undecided as to what we'll do with it. It's a 2-D game so we can't bring it to PS3 or Xbox 360 as is. Quite possibly it will come to a Nintendo system because Nintendo is certainly does not have a high-definition requirement but we're still analyzing our plans for that. In our agreements with Sega-Sammy, essentially we do not announce any console plans until a certain time period has passed and we're still within that time-frame.

AMN: Now, you mentioned that you couldn't bring it to Xbox 360 or PS3 because those are high-definition platforms (with Metal Slug 6 being a 2-D game). Now, you also had a somewhat similar problem with Sony on the PS2, where some games had to be cancelled because Sony of America would not permit it due to some stuff about not meeting their graphical standards, gameplay details aside. Has Nintendo posed any kind of barriers for SNK?

Ben Herman: None whatsoever. They were very happy to have us back on board. They didn't come chasing us, but they allow us to have creativity. One of the things about the development kit for Wii is that, they said to us, create accessories. Do add-ons. If there are companies like Logitech and the like that are going to create all kinds of accessories that Nintendo. . .Nintendo's not going to corner the market or say that these are the only accessories that will plug in and play. They essentially are saying "be creative." Today I went to see the presentation. They had some accessories that had not really been shown. They have a classic joypad. They're working on a gun. Other third parties as far as accessory makers will work on other accessories and you know. . .just have fun with it.

AMN: So in regards to that, can we expect an arcade stick from SNK?

Ben Herman: It's not out of the realm but I think we're going to leave the accessories to the accessory makers.

It's actually starting to kick off here, both Telewest and Sky (TV companies) have HD streams, and HDTV sales have surged in time for the world cup.
But, BUT, it's going to be 2007 at the very earliest because the platform isn't stable and other major Digital TV systems are still "testing".

We don't care, just a few who like spending moneh on large glossy bits of glass.
