Wii gets full SNK support?
« on: May 16, 2006, 03:26:51 PM »
I got this from the-magicbox.com
Quote

SNK Playmore USA president Ben Herman mentioned the company's future plans:

   * Developers are looking into how to use the Wii controller in Metal Slug Anthology
   * Metal Slug 6 will not be included in Metal Slug Anthology, however the game will likely appear in a Nintendo platform, because 2D games are not suitable for PS3 or Xbox 360
   * Sony has rejected a number of their 2D projects for PS2, because they do not correspond to the graphic standard
   * Metal Slug for GBA is a port of the first title in the series, coming out in September 2006
   * SNK Playmore does not plan to release future titles for Xbox
   * Wii will receive the most software support from SNK Playmore
   * The PS2 shooter Twinkle Star Sprites will not be published in US because there's no market for the genre

This is great news! Could this mean wii will get their big franchises like KOF? With the VC controller there is no reason not to bring 2D fighters to the console. This is awsome news for me because the only reason I bought an import PS2 was for the 2D fighters and vertical shooters..... Wii wins again. Sony has turned down some of their games because the graphics weren't good enough apparently.... 3rd parties are making the shift back to Nintendo, I can feel it in my bones

Bring me the head of Neo Geo...... on the VC!

In an interview (i don't know where), the president was like....Yo...

I see no reason why I should hold out and not support the VC. I mean, to me, that's an inevitability. Think about, being able to download some of my greatest stuff from back in the day, and I get hooked up with a check at the end of the day.....AND...i get advertising for my new ish...

Yo homes....that's a win-win-win-I CAN"T LOSE SITUATION ya' heard.

My reaction was...damn, neither can Wii fans. I remember playing NeoGeo in class. I loved those games, now i can play them on my Wii and *gasp* my DS. That's a dream come true.

the interview was from AdvancedMediaNetwork.com

AMN:  You mentioned bringing SNK's games to Xbox live arcade. What is SNK's opinion of Nintendo's Virtual Console?

Ben Herman: It's a tremendous idea. Even though there were no details. And even though the world said "gee the whole NES library is going to be available. The whole Super NES library." That was not true. It was not true initially because there was no third party program. They announced Sega, there's ten Sega games, it's great. Sonic and others that they've actually brought to there. Also some Hudson. Some TurboGrafx games. It's wonderful. I think it's four of those games. But they just announced, and just put a person employed, to create a program to have third party games come to the virtual console. I can go back and get Baseball Stars, Ikari Warriors, P.O.W., and others. . .you KNOW I want them on there. Now I don't know the deal yet, but I am not going to hold back. I want those games to be available to my consumers who want to go play them. It would be wonderful if you buy this $250 system, which is the rumored price. So you buy the system at $250, you have the capability of downloading every game from every prior system going back to '85 and you're talking about a serious home-run. So it's going to be fun.

my thoughts exactly. The trend of no company staying on top of the industry for more then 2 generations continues. I truly believe Sony is making the same type of mistakes Nintendo made on the N64... only worse. The N64 wasn't $600 and didn't force a new media format down our throats.

Yes, SNK finally got tired of Sony treating 2d games like crap and telling them what to do.

Hopefully other companies will follow.  The Wii is the perfect system for 2d games.  It's cheaper and easier to develop for plus having the Virtual Console will bring in a fanbase of old school gamers that love 2d so games would sell the best on the Wii.

And the fact Nintendo has no problems with 2d games so companies wouldn't have to worry since Nintendo would never block any of their games from comming out in North America.

The only problem with all of this is that the Wiimote is going to be horrible for those traditional 2D fighters... Would there be enough of a market for new 2D fighters if you had to use that "shell" (although hardly a shell in function) controller, which sounds not to be packaged in with the system?

Regardless of whether it's a pack-in (hopefully it's a pack-in), the classic controller will be huge because of smash bros. and the virtual console.

Yup. Perhaps this a gross oversimplification, but, it strikes me that Nintendo used to be "Don't meet our standards? F**k off." And now Sony is like that, and Nintendo is all "Don't meet our standards? Here, let us help you."

This bodes well indeed.  Perhaps Nintendo would even assist SNK in making their new/old games even snazzier.  Still, for my hope against hope,  I want to hear Treasure and Banpresto announce singing support.  SRW's on Wii=ohhhhhhh yessssss.   Or at least some sideliners.

I think it's way too early to compare this to the N64 days.  When several major developers completely jump the Sony ship like Square, Enix and Capcom did back in the N64 days, then I'll think about it.  This is only one, they're still giving some support to PS3, and no offence, fans, but SNK is not as important as any of those other three developers.  Although I have to say, Square Enix's impact on the market seems to be dropping since the two companies merged.  Too much stagnation and caution on their part, I think.
That's my opinion, not yours.

It's the Wii Classic.  Not the Wii Shell.  Yeah and I'm sure it has a clip.

I knew Sony's stubborn anti-2D attitude would bite them in the ass in some fashion.  How long has it been since a third party publisher of any sort decided to make a Nintendo console their main console?  I don't think ANY third party provided that level of support on the Cube.  Capcom and Namco were Cube friendly but their focus clearly was the PS2.

Another factor is that... is SNK relatively poor? Maybe the 360 and PS3 are just too expensive to develop for?

I really respect SNK.

They make traditional/classic games and they don't try to modernize their vision too much.

They really are a perfect fit for Nintendo.  To me Nintendo fans are the gamers that enjoy the traditional values and direction of games...and are not as focused on the graphics, cinemas, or overly complex storylines that interfer with gameplay.

I also don't see any reason why the shell wouldn't work...in fact, I would be surprised if it wasn't designed for the shell.

Though, we don't know for an absolute fact that the game won't use the Wii control.  The stuff I read, just commented that he hasn't ruled out using traditional controls which is what I want to hear.

Either way, I need to buy more controllers.  My Gamecube Controllers have finally bit the dust on me, except for two.

So when the Wii comes out I will be pricing classic controllers and Gamecube controllers and seeing which I should purchase.  I am leaning personally towards the new classic controllers, for the more traditional SNES design.  I love that design.
