That would make sense. Nintendo does not want to end up with MS's position of people wanting to buy their console but unable to find it. After all, the design should be finalized by now. I thought I remembered hearing that final dev kits existed, although I do not remember for sure.

I wouldn't doubt that it could be true, but the opening line of that article makes it seem pretty shady even for a "rumor" report:

"According to an anonymous poster over at the IGN message boards, a Nintendo representative told him/her and a co-worker that Nintendo is already producing Wii units and has them stockpiled for release."

thats what I thought when I saw it, its like, "Johnny told me that tom told him that amanda told him  that bob told her ..."

Anyway, an anonymous poster on the ign forums isnt exactly the best source, but it would be cool, if nintendo has the games to back it

Yeah, they probably don't want to experience another unpredictable shortage as it was for the DSLite.

I believe that whenever they release Zelda:TP is more or less when they release the Wii.

Those aren't bad release predictions, though I would have to disagree a bit on the Japan prediction. I think the Wii needs at least 2 maybe 3 months of marketing hype before they put it out. So I would guess late july, early august. Late September, early October for NA and late November early December for everywhere else.

December is a bad month to release a system in any territory because then both the launch hype and holiday hype cancel each other out. I'm going to predict November or earlier for Europe, if they can get shipments done quickly and efficiently, there could be a huge number of systems sold at the launch, and also another huge number sold to holiday shoppers the next month, then it's up to momentum.

June for Japan is too early... unless it's out in other territories at that time as well, I think a worldwide launch is the most important thing to focus on. Plus Japan still has the DS causing riots in the meantime so there's no rush.

Nintendo isn't exactly known for releasing products in Europe around the same time as North America and Japan though.  Of course maybe with the Wii that might change.

I read the original IGN post, and it's' a bit less shady than most of you might believe.

It's still shady though.

Is it true? Naw, no way. Final dev kits don't go out till June. What games could possibly be complete by June with no Final dev kits?

If they don't change the name, then there's no point in stockpiling the systems in their warehouses, since no one's going to buy the system. It's like buying condoms...from a 90 year old lady working in the electronics department.

It's BS.

If developers don't have final dev hardware, they're not stockpiling final consumer products. And it is retarded to stockpile an inventory for half a year. There are a LOT of costs associated with that. They'll start production no sooner than a quarter before launch.

On the same visit she told Jawabreaker that she would be replacing the DS kiosks in June (with DSlites) and that Nintendo only tells them to do that when its about to release. So this same source (the Nintendo rep) "predicted" the DSlite release in June [on may 1st... the official DSlite announcement was on the 4th.]

That's the only thing that makes me give her Wii "prediciton" a second thought.
