See, you're being sarcastic (I HOPE...), but there are people here making this exact same argument and they're serious.

Let me let people in on a little secret: when you can't make an argument without resorting to insult and mockery of the other party, then you subconsciously know that your argument doesn't hold water.

Well, right, that was my point: this feels like one of those Star Trek episodes where some weird alien force is making everyone act all crazy like.

That can't be, because wii really is a good name.

"People in the US buy iPods because it's fashionable, not because it's a good MP3 player."

Well, it is a good mp3 player.  And they make good computers.
I'm not just saying that because I own one, either, because I don't own either.  I own a Dell Inspiron 9100 and I don't own any brand of mp3 player.
Not sure why it's relevant, just thought I'd mention it.

"despite all logic, they LOVE the name and blindly approve of it."

I don't blindly approve of everything Nintendo does.  I disliked and gave away my copy of Advance Wars DS after not liking the game.  I don't like Animal Crossing.
I thought Geist fell far short of my expectations, with both the ghost and FPS aspects of gameplay.  On the other hand, I believe you said that you really liked Geist.  Does that put you into "fanboy alert mode"?  I like Wii, but dislike Geist.  You like Geist and dislike Wii.  Doesn't mean sh!t either way, it's our opinion.
Also, I might point out that I never said I LOVE the name.

Well no one is saying the Wii is a bad console, just an unmarketable one.

And predicting that a Nintendo console will flop is EASY.  They've had two consoles in a row that underperformed.  Three if you count Virtual Boy.  The Wii flopping is merely the status quo.

Nintendo is still doing the "live with the unpopular decision we have made" routine.  Did that work with the N64?  No.  Did it work with the Cube?  No.  When has it EVER worked?
It's not unmarketable. The name is unique, people will take notice. This is why I believe the names suits, it makes you give attention, you hear a name like that you are going to ask what it is.

I will also guarantee you, it is only the internet that has a huge problem with this name. Most people won't even realise or care that there was a name change. People aren't going to suddenly decide against what the Wii brings because of a name. A name may be the deciding factor in two products that are very similar, but a product that offers something unique, something different, something great won't lose out soley on a name.

It can go both ways, the fact that you bring that up means you're questioning the reality of the world and your position in it, which means you're unsure. When something is so ridiculous, the reasoning goes over your head, attempting to reply to it on the same level will bring you into ridiculousness, but it still has to be responded to, so there's nothing else to do but laugh.

Wii supporters and Wii detractors both seem have very different philosophies on life, i've found, and it's interesting to see who's on which side in this whole debacle. Wiiners vs Whiiners?

I respect Dasmos, I think he's a good man, but, quite frankly, I agree with everything he just said. (catch that reference) Unmarketable? Wii practically markets itself.

I'd quote your entire message for truth Smash_Brother, but it's far too long... anyway great points all round and I fully agree with nearly everything you said, except for the fact that the iPod is a great MP3 player (just way too expensive).

jeez chris I leave for one day and everyone gets bent out of shape over a fricken name?!

the public  will still play it. a name will only dissuade self-conscious dbags who don't deserve to play (my roomate).
plus nintendo thinks it is chic. I say go for it.

finally, we don't know if it might stand for something else. There's one big feature we haven't seen. mayeb Wii is and acronym.

hell I already like it just cuz it's easy to type

Wii!!!!
I'll shut up now...

No, the name has a broad, philisophical aim, it's (almost) everyone here who is unable to get over the childish, potty-humor that they have decided to force upon it.

If you have to explain your name and tell people to just deal with it, it's a bad name.

They could've come up with a similar product name that's just as weird, just as unique, just as intriguing, but doesn't have all the issues that "Wii" does. That's why it isn't excuseable.

Exactly. Nothing can please 100% of a base, everyone knows that. Marketers tend to aim for at least that 90-95% sweet spot. This name has clearly botched even getting close to that with the level of controversy that it has generated, and since the name is meant only to sizzle the product and make it more desirable, it has clearly failed on that basis.

If this is a joke I'd love it. It'd be brilliant. One of the funniest things ever.

But it's not...

Well I think your 3 cent titanium tax goes too far...But anyway I've got 'a head i the polls'...

On topic: I don't love the name, I don't hate it. I think that it does look better in writing than it sounds. I must say I'm not a huge fan of the Appleitis that has dominated Nintendo's design as of late. The Rev / Wii hardware design was enough, the fact that the logo looks like an Apple logo is a shameless imitation. When did a splash of colour hurt?

An even more Appleized name: iWii

“I waited all day. you waited all day.. but you left before sunset.. and I just wanted to tell you the moment was beautiful. Just wanted to dance to bad music drive bad cars.. watch bad TV.. should have stayed for the sunset...if not for me.â€
