Has the best of the DS come and gone
« on: April 18, 2006, 06:53:31 PM »
We've had online, mario kart, metroid, castlevania, advance wars, and now a fourth coming zelda, most of the major franchises have appeared, but is the best still to come? I think we've already seen it, but that by no means their is no hope in the future, there will be plenty of ground breaking titles, but WFC is what has really defined the DS.
Discuss people.

It has only just begun.

I'm waiting for the next wave of "good" wifi titles. Tetris and Metroid are just sparkling innovation filler games, I want me some Mario Basketball! Pokemon too, that's going to be absolutely massive.

New Mario Bros isn't even out yet and you think the best has happend? Girl what's wrong with you! DS is all about new franchises like Nintendogs and I imagine more new franchises to rope in more of us females.

QFT. We need some DS Hentai games. I keep hearing of such games on the PSP in Japan, but never about any such DS games...

Metroid Dread dude. But yeah, New SMB and Phantom Hourglass look to be freaking awesome. Phantom Hourglass especially.  And even Pokemon Ranger looks interesting. I'll wait on the reviews, but it's the first Pokemon game to even interest me since Red/Blue.

Hm.  Let's not forget Star Fox and F-Zero.  However, I would wish that Nintendo would not develop either of those games.  Hand Star Fox over to Namco, who did an astounding job with Star Fox Assault, and hand F-Zero over to Namco/Sega, who did an astounding job with F-Zero GX.

Erm...whut?

Starfox Assault was passable, but it was nowhere near as good as Starfox 64, and the land based missions could have used alot more tweaking.
=====
But...Really, the DS has been out for a little over a year and you're already talking about the "best of" games?  Remember, RE4 didn't come out until the 4th year of the GC's lifecycle, and its largley considered one of the best Gamecube games ever.

There have been a ton of good games already for the DS, and as more developers come on board and more third parties get the hand of dev'ing on a DS, I think we're going to be getting alot more.

Besides RE4, more evidence that many of the best games come late in a system's life:

PS2: Kingdom Hearts 2 and Shadow of the Collosus
GBA: Drill Dozer, LOZ: The Minish Cap, and Gunstar Super Heroes
N64: Perfect Dark, Paper Mario, LOZ: Majora's Mask, Conker's Bad Fur Day (yeah, I said it)
SNES: Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG, SMW2: Yoshi's Island, Donkey Kong Country 2
That's my opinion, not yours.
Now Playing: The Adventures of Link, Super Street Fighter 4, Dragon Quest IX

New Super Mario Brothers
Contact
Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
Final Fantasy III
Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles
Children of Mana
Pokemon Pearl/Diamond
Pokemon Ranger
Project Hacker
Mario Basket
Thief Wario
Tales of Tempest
Metroid Dread

And this is only stuff we KNOW about...

The platform doesn't even have a good RPG yet.  I think it's safe to say that there is still good stuff to come.

Who the hell thinks the DS is going downwards? There's tons of games still coming. Companies like Square-Enix haven't even released their first DS game yet.

As much as I appreciate the Zork reference, I have to say that I find M&L to be pretty weak.  I'm about halfway through it and it's boring me to tears.  I feel like I'm doing the same thing over and over and over again.   Sure the writing is good cheeky fun, but the gameplay and design just aren't there.  There's no sense of character progression, the levels are completely linear "find the switch to continue" fare, and the combat is incredibly repetitive.

A lot of people whose taste I respect really loved this game.  Maybe I just don't get it, but I've found it to be the most disappointing game for the DS so far.
