I like DMA, now known as Rockstar North. But for all that GTA 3 is groundbreaking, it really could be a much better game if they had someone to help them craft more "game" and better game controls out of their big, big, environment.

GTA failed with GTA: LCS, the fact that a GTA game pretty much failed to sell a system and itself does not bode to well for the franchise.  It failed so much they are basically porting it to the PS2 to make up for what they lost when it bombed on the PSP.

And Rockstar really needs to branch out, because when GTA dies out, they really have nothing to fall back on.  And GTA is going to die out one day.

It was still a million seller, which on that zero of a platform is more than respectable. It just didn't sell systems the way GTA3 sold PS2's.

I think, if Red Steel is what it promises to be, that it will be the new GTA.

We've done Western crime to death. It's time to see what crime looks like through the ranks of the Yakuza and when swords come into the picture.

From the sounds of it, you can choose missions in whatever order you please which means that we might be able to expect a consistent world like GTA has, except from a FPS viewpoint and with far more depth and a system for real combat.

Eventually someone was going to mention it: top franchises of one generation can become insignificant the next.

See the Resident Evil 'exclusivity'-deal and Metal Gear Re-make...

Aside from making the 'sandbox' bigger, what else can they do? What about turning it into a MMO game? Instead of guilds, there can rival families. Players can choose to be either the Cops(clean or corrupt) and try and keep the peace, or just be your standard hooligan and jack cars and the like. Or be neutral by starting a business that both law-breakers and abiders come to...

There'd be perks and disadvantages of choosing your lifestyle. I'll let your imagination or your skeptisicsm/cynicism... run wild from here.

Aside from a handful of must-buy exclusives, the 360's getting a rap for bumped-up ports of current gen-games. Those ports look really nice, but aren't worth the 20 percent mark-up. Maybe if they did something like add exclusive content right out of the box like exclusive levels, weapons, cheats, interviews/making of's etc, it'd be worth it.

I'm guessing we're more likely to see graphical upgrades, bigger maps, and incrementally more RPG elements. MMO is a neat idea, but it's still quite niche on a console.

I wish they'd just let GTA as a franchise rest for awhile and use the basic design of the GTA games for other interesting situations. What if they made a game like GTA: San Andreas only encompassing the entire Gaza Strip and parts of Israel, and had you play as a Palestinian militant? Or a Taliban remnant in Afghanistan? Or hey, keep the crime thing, but make it more of a period piece, like maybe prohibition era Chicago / Detroit / Windsor? Imagine making liquor runs across the border.

The "safe" choice will be to just pick another city, make it more photorealistic, get more big names to do voice overs, and just give us "same thing, new story". It might even work, after all, the Final Fantasy games remain popular despite little effort to truly "reinvent" them.

Prohibition? TMW and Josanditz...you ROCK!

No, seriously, this sounds exactly like something I'd imagine them doing.

Didn't EA already do this with The Godfather?
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

Didn't Take-Two accomplish that themselves by publishing (the disappointing) Mafia?

Seriously. The next gen will be all about indoor sports.

Although it wouldn't make sense to call it "Grand Theft Auto" anymore I think a GTA game that took place in a sword and sorcery setting would be great and it would be a fresh take on the concept and thus could stand out.  If you're familiar with works of that genre, like Conan for example, there are a lot of theives and mercenaries which would be perfect for GTA.

Ideally it would work best as a spinoff like Starcraft is to Warcraft.

Grand Theft Chariot in ancient Rome.

Hell, if they can do Battlefield 2142, anything is possible.

Hell I would rather play Grand Theft Chariot...than any of the Grand Theft Auto games...at least it would have a crazy style and be different.
