Xbox 360 exclusive GTA?
« on: April 08, 2006, 10:32:59 PM »
According to a rumor in GI (gee those guys are getting everything now), this might be the case.
Quote

-Microsoft is currently trying their hardest to secure the next version of GTA as an Xbox 360 exclusive. They claim MS is going full out in this. Even if MS does not secure it as a full exclusive, they will try to get it as a timed exclusive (similar to Sony last gen)

This would be a pretty big blow to Sony I think, and shows signs of a massive battle between Sony and MS about to take place. I think Xbox 360 is a joke at the moment, but if MS pull this off they are going to get lots of momentum and Sony will have something to worry about.

Of course, this is just a rumor, and may not turn out to be true, but the silence regarding next gen GTA is a bit odd I think.

The best thing this generation will be to sit back, cuddle up with your Rev, and watch the fight of the millenium go down between Sony and MS.

If only there was virtual popcorn on the virtual console, I'd be set.

P.S. I really AM excited about this showdown. Sony and MS are gonna duke it out bigtime and I'll be able to enjoy it impartially.  My money is for MS to win because they're fresh and hungry, I think that in the end MS will be smarter than Sony, and want it more, as this aggressive move on the GTA series shows.

The biggest danger for Sony would be for Nintendo to make a huge indent in Japan (VERY possible) and Microsoft to do the same in North America (GTA would be huge). Then they'd be fighting a major battle on two fronts against two opponents whose success drives Sony down, and thus elevates both of them in both territories.

I agree 100% If MS can win North America, and if Nintendo can win Japan, where does that leave Sony?. But the Playstation name is still big so I'm sure the PS3 will be successful at least the first few years of it's life.

Will a timed exclusive really do that much for 360 sales?  As long as people know the game will be ported to other systems there's little point in purchasing a brand new system just to play the game six months earlier.

GTA3 sold a lot of PS2's because it wasn't known at that point that the game would be available on PC and Xbox at a later date.  VC and SA sold a lot of copies on PS2 because people who wanted it already had the system, but anyone who had a PC or Xbox had little reason to buy a PS2 just for those games.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

Rockstar has already said the next GTA will be for the PS3 and I think its very very very unlikely Sony would let go of that series so easily when its their big system seller.

I wonder if GTA has the same allure as it once did. Sure, the Liberty City Stories sold pretty well, but I don't know if the series is going to be the system seller it was at the beginning of this generation.

Not that that's liable to stop Microsoft.

San Andreas felt like kind of a peak for where you can go with the present engine. It was spectacularly epic with an enormous amount of free roaming. Everyone I've talked to that's played LCS says it felt like a "step backwards". Other than "San Andreas with improved graphics" I don't see where they can really go without reinventing themselves again.

There's a difference between trying and succeeding. MS trying to secure GTA as an exclusive does not mean Rockstar will give them GTA as an exclusive. There's a lot of money in GTA and I have a feeling that Rockstar isn't easy to sway when it comes to missing out on millions of sales.

Eventually someone was going to mention it: top franchises of one generation can become insignificant the next. The system seller of the next generation (Or current generation? Transition confuses me.) will be a new franchise, or one that hasn't enjoyed much of the lime light. GTA exclusivity doesn't mean anything now.

From Rockstar's (and TTWO's) position, it might make sense. The 360 has already gotten off to a respectable start, while the PS3 is beset by delays and rumors of outrageously high prices. Taking a big money hat to switch to an already established platform might be a sensible choice.

Either way, they're running the risk that controlling gunplay with an analog joystick and a button is going to begin to feel a lot like interacting with 3D worlds with a D-pad when the Rev comes out. God help them if Mario shoots a hooker.

Isn't any game that comes out for X360 right now a timed exclusive? MS is basically paying them to make them a new GTA game.

Sounds like the perfect opportunity for another third party to step in and steal the genre from Rockstar from releasing a Rev game that competes with GTA.

Except for the 90% of them which are ports of titles from the previous generation.

QFT.

I think that it was likely a fad and that it's passed by now. How many times can you run over the same hooker, jack the same car, etc. etc.?

I wouldn't be surprised if it has indeed run its course.

No, you're in wrong.

GTA's allure will be tested NOT when a port comes out, but when GTA: London comes out.

Last I checked GTA: London was released in 1999.

I recently picked-up an original XBox (to tide me over until the Revolution arrives this Fall). Anyways, I figured since the purpose of buying the XBox was to play the games that were never released for the gameCube, I felt it was kind of obligatory for me to pick-up a GTA game. I went with San Andreas.

Maybe it's because I'm 30 years old, but I found this game to not only be way over-hyped, but it's gets pretty boring, fairly quickly. I know that kids (I can't believe I'm at the age where I can no longer identify with today's youth) love this game. I know they find it highly amusing to hear their game characters curse. The truth is after about 5 minutes of playing the game, all of this gets very old. The graphics are very underwhelming, and the controls could use a lot of tightening-up. I was very disappointed with my first "Grand Theft Auto" experience. The funny thing is - I loved the first "True Crime" game (maybe because the game actually had a coherent story?).

Take it this way, it took Rockstar 3 3D GTAs to make your character able to swim when you crash a vehicle onto water environment, that shows how much dedication they have to make the game enjoyable, and yes it does get pretty boring after a while.

Perhaps that's because they wanted to use liquid to block off areas and lava just doesn't seem convincing?
