so does your Game Cube remind you of your NES at all?
« on: March 07, 2006, 08:29:50 PM »
This is going to be my thread about what similarities there are between GC and NES. I um dont knwo what made me want to do this but I will say that i found a old bag of Nintendo games booklets ata htrift store and have been reading those alogn with looking at the posters and ect adn have been doing alot of remenscising. (please excuse spelling its late and the usual yada yada)

Anyways When I got my NES back in the day the first game we had was (duh) Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt

Its wierd looking back on it cuz I actualy played Duck Hunt more than SMB back then and it was the first game we played after we hooked it up, we took turns and didnt want to stop because it was so much fun. Then we tried MArio Bros and was blown away, I mean WOW. Nothng has ever captrued my imagination in the same way as Mario did.

Now flash forward to GC. WhenI first got my GC it was when they were doing the Zelda Collectors Edition bundle so I finaly caved in and got myself a GC (had been holding out to play N64)

Now the first few games I got were MK Deadly Allience, of coruse that Zelda Collectors disk (talk abotu sparking memories/emotions!) and Sonic Adventure DX

Now I have to say that at first I was not impressed with Zelda or even Sonic I liked then and theyw ere fun but I had already experienced those before on previous systems.

Then I played MK 5 and WOW! That wa the first time in a LONG time a video game had sparked my imagination and made me so mesmorised I couldnt do anything else until I had unlocked every secret. I knwo its funny comparing Mario Bros to Mortal Kombat but I am a HUGE MK fan ( and its always been the story/characters for me) and I was so drawn in to the events of DA that I spent hours a day playing that game, and dreaming up what it would be like to be there myself. AS hard as it is to beleive Mortal Kombat Deadly Allience was the only game since Mario to touch me on so many emotional levels.

Moving on, after playing through Mario bros and dieing a thousand terrible deaths and after playign Duck Hunt till out Zapper broke (yes we played it TOO MUCH and it broke!) We started bagging mom and dad to buy/rent us more games. Now in the early days I was drawn to Mario games more than anything else, I played Mario Bros 2 and whenit came out Mario bros 3 day in and day out. Then Nntendo rewarded me with Dr mario, ah that was a interesting game to play on our 13 INCh Black and White UHf Sharp Television set (yeah we were that poor we didnt geta  color tv in our bedrooms nor did we get cable ready)

as much as I will get flamed for this I actualy liked SMB2 a lotmore than the first and was disapointd (only at first) mario 3 wasnt more like it. I would rent SMB2 every other time we would rent games, I woudl rotate between that and Little Nemo and occasionaly mix it up with Duck Tales or A Nightmare On Elm Street (another deeply touching game that sparked many emotions and lots of day dreams)

Anyways fast forward to GC

Now after having beaten Mk DA and Sonic Adventure I decide to invest in expanding my game collection ever so slowly adn decide to take a chanc eona game my freind had suggested tome, a game called Star Fox Adventure( and this was hard to do cuz I didnt like SNES SF or Sf 64) but something drew me into that game like I cant describe and I have to honestly say it has been one of my favorite GC games, and holds ahigh spot on my favorites of all time list also.

I can not explain what made this game so fun or magical but I suspect a lot of it was it was a new and excitning world to explore and it had been a while since Nintendo had made a game of that nature I coudl enjoy (too many games that were so similar) ok so rare made it but it had Nintendos name on it and yeah it was a great game.

So I dont know what was it that makes these games stand out in my mind but for some reason I just felt like sharing this. go figure.

So now I sit here and I play my Game Cube(a lot less than thoe first few months) and I think back to the NES days and Gc is the first Nintendo system that has sparked similar emotions and feelinsg as well as ideas and fantasies as teh NES did way back when/. I so hope that Revolution can deliver on its promises and I hope even more that Nintendos magic touch will return victorious once again.

The cube reminds me more of the snes. Lots of sequels that aren't really as magical as the ground-breaking games that came out on the previous system, but are better graphically.

(Yeah, I prefer Nintendo's odd-numbered systems.)

>>Tell me you played Link to the Past and OOT when they came out? Yoshi's Island? Super Mario 64? They weren't dormant between 1990 and 2001! If you haven't then you're missing out!

Star Fox Adventure( and this was hard to do cuz I didnt like SNES SF or Sf 64) but something drew me into that game like I cant describe and I have to honestly say it has been one of my favorite GC games, and holds ahigh spot on my favorites of all time list also.

>>I have to disagree greatly. I felt nothing from that game, and I didn't feel much from SMS or MK: DD or what I thought would be the usual instant classics; for me it was MP and Pikmin.

Nope, I like the Gamecube.  I'm more of an SMS fan than an NES one.  The Gamecube actually reminds me of my Genesis (the best console ever), in that I want to play it a lot and all the exclusive games for it are pretty slick (and a lot of them are really original).  Oh, and I think both sytems have great, comfortable controllers.

well to answer SNES was not my system of choice, it did not impress me at first, it was like a repeat of NEs and didnt offer a whole lot different for me so I went with Sega genesis.

I eventualy got a SNES but not until after the Super Nintendo came out, and no nothing on SNES ipacted me like the early NES games and those GC games I listed.

N64 was bad for me, not a bad system but that time of my life was and Id idnt play video games that much, I actualy bought a n64 and ps1 same day (18th b-day) so I didnt have just one but I spent more time playifn FF7 and Super Mario RPG for my SNES than n64, and the only games I had on 64 was OOT, MKT, MK 4, Mario 64 and Shadows of the empire. I had plenty of freidns who had 64s and was never that impressed. I have one now and still rarely play it. 64 was just not that good IMO.

Ok SO you can change the title to Does your GC remind you of yor SNES at all if thast yor thing, cuz I seam to her that alot from people. I dont knwo maybe after the intitial introductin into GC i havent been that impressed and that is how Iw as with SNES, there was a lot of games I liked but not very many that werent available on Gensis so I never had a reason to switch.

My parents, uncles and aunts are nowhere near the little thing (or any gaming device for that matter), so Id say that although I love my GC it cant compare to the NES, the console seriously made every one I know to play games.

Not to mention the lack of a pirate korean cartridge with 64 games which were all awesome ah, the good old days...

My parents didn't spoil me when I was a kid.  All I had were Contra, Mario/Duckhunt, Super C, Mega Man 2, and Airwolf.

Now I spoil myself with GameCube games, even if I don't have time to play them.

Me too.....I seriously think that I have a problem.  It seems that I get more enjoyment from seeing a game announced, following the previews and screenshots, counting down the days, then running all over town to find a copy (pre-orders ruin half the fun!) than actually playing them.  I mean, I have so many games still in shrink wrap it's ridiculous.....like I collect them like baseball cards or comic books or something.  I know this prolly stems from my mom not allowing me to have video games until I could buy them myself (I even built me a MAME cab), plus when you're a grown man your time isn't what it used to be, but MAN......it's like as soon as I get a new title, I'm already on the hunt for the next soon-to-be-released title.....is something wrong with me?

GameCube reminds me of a big container of horse urine that's been sitting on top of a burnt out car for weeks on end while small children hurl eggs and terrorists crash planes into it and they sink, causing the polar ice caps to melt and flood the world with a lack of new releases.

Hmmm, I like my GC but I'm not sure I would put it in the same league as NES or SNES, mainly because there haven't been that many truly memorable games for me. Really the only ones I would consider truly great are Super Mario Sunshine and Wind Waker, along with some other good games. My N64 on the other hand would be a better comparison to the SNES and NES, in that it had so many great experiences.

Sunshine? Truly great? Don't make me laugh.

If you want to give out these titles, Metroid Prime should be the first choice.

I'm probably in the minority here (maybe the only one?), but MP didn't do that much for me. I really did try to like it: I even lied to myself for the first couple hours saying I did like it. But I didn't. I found more enjoyment out of SMS, SSBM, Pikmin, Wind Waker (even if it did pale in comparison to Nintendo's earlier efforts), not to mention the original Metroid and Super Metroid. The GCN was Nintendo's weakest generation in my eyes, and before the Wii (or rather, Revolution at the time) was announced, I was pretty firm on quitting gaming and not buying the next generation. NES was what got me into it all, and it was just amazing. The SNES added a lot more to that, with more classics (LttP <3). N64 changed the face of gaming. GameCube was just an extension of the N64 with less creativity, in my opinion.

So, no. The GCN, sadly, doesn't remind me of the NES.

But the Wii just might.
Any color you like.

I can't believe people haven't mentioned a certain 3rd-party game that involves shooting lots and lots of people, with a main villian that sounds like the Count from Sesame Street.

That's all I'm sayin'.
